    I still have a saved article Jarrod wrote years ago where he had McGain as one of his favourite cricketers:
    "I wasn't there for all the times no one believed in him, for all those times his dream was so far away and life was in his way. But I was there now, at what was obviously the end. Bryce McGain saw the darkness but refused to enter it. That's special. That is how you achieve your dreams when everything is against you."

    Boy McGain was bloody unlucky. That shoulder injury wrecked his Test debut. Also, I though Nathan Hauritz was a fine cricketer. I think he should have played more Tests.

      Hauritz was pretty hard done by. I remember being happy to just have a reliable spinner in the side when he was playing.

      As an England fan, it was baffling as to why he was omitted from the 2010/11 series.@@twrampage

    Worth noting McGain has even more strange stats: he made his listA debut for Denmark in 2002 where he scored his only ListA of First Class 50, and then somehow played for the South Australia Under 23 team in in 2011… despite being almost 40? Guy had such an interesting career, and got to play in one of those legends leagues where he looks to have done quite well in his 4 matches. fair play to him!

    I am just happy Lyon reminded Australia what a non asian spinner is supposed to do. Hold one end up, chip away the wickets and give the fast bowlers a break.

      Its going to be in the shadow of Lyon too

    omg, please continue this series and if possible (i know this will be a TONNE of work) but maybe a similar analysis for Anderson's and perhaps Broad's impact on english fast bowlers? I _feel_ like he's had a similar effect, thinking about woakes. A whole generation or two of medium to medium fast bowlers withered away because two legends held on to their place. I think a similar story played out during Kapil Dev's hold onto his position past his prime.
    Great job Jarrod and team!

    Hey Jarrod, I was hoping you could perhaps make a video regarding greatest wicket-keeper of the Game.
    Would be wonderful delving into a few questions such as...
    What makes a great wicket-keeper?
    How has the role evolved throughout the ages?
    What bowlers did they keep too? (Would be interesting to see stat's such as missed chances vs pace/spin if available.)
    How were they with the bat?
    What else did they offer the team? eg)captaincy/team spirit/DRS calls?
    Perhaps if we would be so lucky, mention a few personal favourites as well.

    I think murphy is going to be a 100+ wkt bowler in tests. We need stability in spin bowling. Its the area that keeps letting us down.
    Lyon has needed a partner or a back up for a long time and no one has quite worked.

    1/150 is arguably a worse debut, given that the only wicket you got that day was a very tired double centurion who had bashed you round the park for a better part of a day lobs you off to mid off. Not sure what happened to that guy…

    Most captains / teams don't know how to use spinners. Either they become a stop gap measure or are never trusted with the ball. In NZ cricket we have seen this a lot, even our most successful bowler (Vetorri) just ended up as a defensive bowler when he began as a very attacking one.

    • @nooneknows19
      @nooneknows19 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Seeing the success New Zealand have had without a spinner is both inspiring and concerning at the same time. I think its just gonna cause future generations of kiwis to never pick a spinner. A big reason why they got away with it was Grandhomes bowling and Wagner being able to bowl 1000 over spells.

    • @larrygerry985
      @larrygerry985 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @nooneknows19 basically true. Also, it means we don't know how to use them

      De Grandhomme they will replace. Where the next Wagner will come from is anybody's guess ...

    Bryce McGain, shame his test went so badly, but what a story for him to have even played a test.

    Thank you for making this video. I remember shortly after SKW's retirement, I was able to show my friends an XI of Australian test spinners that had debuted (Casson, MacGill*, Hogg, White etc). But that graphic is something else!

    @Jarrod Kimber this story about McGain was heartbreaking but also very inspiring. I have a 9-year who is a fairly decent left-arm bowler (we all know your love for left-armers) and I am sure this will inspire him to keep learning his craft

      I think I saw something from Seth rogan recently talking about the difference between those who make it and those who don’t is not giving up. You can’t guarantee you make it if you keep going, but you can guarantee you won’t if you stop.
