    I played with the idea of solipsism for a while. It was narcissistic of me, but I figured if everyone I encountered was a creation of my own imagination I wouldn't have a reason to hate/love/mistreat/take care of them. I could just be indifferent and continue on until that inevitable death.
    Whenever I go to an amusement park, these thoughts arise in my head.

      ***** You still don't technically need to hate/love people if you believe in determinism :) might be a nice alternative there. (Of course, practical concerns kind of outweigh that aspect of it...)

      @TTIOttio 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** I believe in a similar thing - I don't know if it has a name as I haven't formally studied philosophy.
      Basically, there are a number of people within a simulation (my guess is a few hundred), and everyone else is part of the simulation. That's why there are people who are utterly two-dimensional, and many which make no kind of sense whatsoever. Of course, anything far enough away can then be simplified down (from my perspective, it would make no difference if the US didn't actually exist and was just being simulated on a very broad level).
      There are probably holes in it, but meh. It works for me. I think that's the most important thing about individual philosophy, in the end. What matters is not whether or not it's true, but how it helps you get through day to day life (if it does).

    • @Phagocytosis
      @Phagocytosis 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TTIOttio To me, it does matter whether or not it's true... but it's fair enough if that's not the case for you. I haven't heard of your particular philosophy before, although I would be surprised if it wasn't already described somewhere with its own name.
      By the way, I don't think that many people are "utterly two-dimensional"; they just might seem that way at a glance.

    • @TTIOttio
      @TTIOttio 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Eh, fair enough. I figure if we can't ever be sure, why worry about which is actually true?
      And yes, not many people are two dimensional. However, some are. Those people are not fun to be around.

    The thing is, is that with there being so many stars, and hydrocarbons being so incredibly common, the variables for life absolutely had to happen somewhere. Additionally, life formed around these variables, not vice versa. There could even be forms of life to which this planet would be exceedingly inhospitable, who are looking up right now at the stars, thinking that there is such a small chance that the variables for their existence would be exactly perfect for them to live that there must be some higher power. Some silicon, cyanide, or methane based lifeform on a planet that's 1000 Kelvin who thinks "Oh, it's a bit toasty" when the temperature changes to 1030 Kelvin.
    That's the thing about our search for life. We immediately dismiss planets which we deem inhospitable to ourselves.

    • @MrBoro6666
      @MrBoro6666 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Regular Tetragon I know, that's the thing that has always got me is whenever you hear talk of "hospitable planets" I always think, sure they're the only places we could live but what about some other lifeforms that can live in conditions that would kill a human instantly. Maybe there is intelligent life looking at our planet now thinking that this is an inhospitable place that no life could survive on, yet..... here we are.

      Boro_6666 Yeah, I can fully understand researchers narrowing their search down to planets where humans could possibly survive as otherwise you would have to research literally every single planet potentially, but I can definitely imagine species on other planets being able to survive in vastly different conditions than our Earth's.

      @MrBoro6666 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      GodafossTV - Dota 2 news, stats, analyses and more Also we don't know what these planets may have been in the past. There may be vast, ancient civilizations that are long dead but there is still evidence of them being there. I mean like ancient dead cities (this is getting a bit sci-fi lol) . There is reasonable evidence to suggest Mars once had liquid water on the surface so there are highly likely to be others like it out there

    • @RegularTetragon
      @RegularTetragon 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ***** But silicon is an element which is in the carbon family, thus making it chemically similar to carbon, and a very likely candidate for an alternate base of life. It's also exceedingly common, as in pretty much everything underground is made partially of the stuff. Germanium could also be thought of in this way, but lead and tin can have unexpected charges, (+)2 or (+/-)4, especially in lead, and Flerovium is, in addition to the lead and tin problems, extremely unstable with a whopping 114 Protons.and a half life of 2.6 seconds in its most stable isotope.

    So here's my silly thoughts.
    If the digits following pi are infinite and random, then you can find any sequence of numbers somewhere in there. Like even though there is an incredibly small chance of finding 1234567890987654321 for example, you could, because the infinite length of digits. That means that you could find a series of zeroes with an infinite length, right? So any number that infinitely regresses like pi, will eventually end, even though it can't.

    • @HamfistedPig
      @HamfistedPig 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hate to break it to you, but it is infinite to the point where it begins reoccurring
      So the order is known, but there is no limit. That sequence may exist within it, I haven't memorised them, but it isn't infinitely random.

    • @gwonbusH
      @gwonbusH 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Brad Miles The flaw in your argument is assuming an infinite set will invariably contain another infinite set. While it is likely to contain any set of numbers of a finite length (assuming it is a truly nonrational number), the chances of it containing a particular infinite set are infinitely small.

    Awesome vid! Two things that I'd like to add are
    1. Apparently this couldn't be a simulation if irrational numbers such as pi go on forever.
    2. The chances of the conditions of this universe being so perfect for intelligent life is not an argument for intelligent design. If the conditions weren't perfect to allow us to exist, then we wouldn't be here to point that out. We are just an insignificant, mathematical eventuality.
    Great, intriguing vid! Keep it up!

    Maybe our discovery of alien life is more related to chaos theory where anything we are actually doing has no effect on discovery and it's just something which may happen

    You got the Fermi paradox completely wrong. The Fermi paradox is that we evolved to this point in a mere few million years after the formation of our star and, assuming we don't get wiped out before then, can expect to spread across the galaxy in 50 million years or less. But, there are many comparable stars that formed billions of years before ours, so where are the galaxy spanning civilizations?
    The fact that we don't see evidence of these civilizations could have many explanations, and there is a case to be made that the most likely explanation is they don't exist. In which case we need to ask why. And that leads into the great gates speculation.

    It's pronounced like pew-jit sound. It's the huge inlet into Washington state, Seattle is part of Puget Sound. Fun Fact! We've had giant squid wash up in Puget Sound, there are trenches in the sound we have not been able to map.

    Why has this made me want to re-watch 'The Thirteenth floor' all this talk of alternate realities and the matrix reminds me so much of the film and the idea that our perceived world is actually a simulation from a higher/future race.

    By the way, we actually see in 2D which I think is what they were talking about because our eyes see in 2D but having 2 of them makes us able to destinguish depth by comparing our two differently-positioned 2D views.

    I remember a science lesson where we dissected an eye. It's quite hard to cut through with a scalpel, hence why you have to do small, quick movements with it to make an incision.
    Unless you do what my group did, and stab it with a poker.
    Eye juice squirted out.
    It was pretty gross.

      Or have relatively blunt scalpels and have to stab it... Eye "juice" all over the place, ah the memories :P
