I'm going to copy my comment from another video. I really love how mature the ending of the film ended up being. Just like how, in the real world, we don't get to see our lost loved ones once they are gone, in the end Suzume did not find closure by seeing her mother one last time, but rather by becoming the one to comfort, care for and guide her own younger self, symbolically taking the role of the mother, that way filling the hole that was left behind by her loss.
I love this movie soooo much!!! The characters and the message are amazing. I love how Suzume and Souta were unaware of how valuable life is till they almost lost it. Souta tried to convinced himself he had to accept his destiny as a keystone, but in his heart he was actually so afraid to die, and seeing that makes in his thoughs when saving him, makes Suzume understand that she wanted to live too! They both wanted to keep living! Because of that, she was able to talk to herself in the ever after. I love it very much!!! Thanks for reacting, it was nice to watch!! ❤💖
As a Japanese, I want you guys to know that this film is about the Great East Japan Earthquake. The families of the 10,000 victims could not say "welcome back" to their loved ones beyond saying "see you later". If you watch this film again knowing this fact, you will understand how dear Suzume, who lost her family in the earthquake, was able to say "welcome back" to Shouta.
I didn't fully understand the context until she opened up her old journal to March 11th and it was all black. The page after page of trauma. I remember that scene the most. It's haunting.
I was in high school directly on the other side of the pacific ocean from the 3/11 earthquake and tsunami. We would get debris from Japan for years. We'd get washed away trinkets and sometimes cars and boats, pieces of buildings, and once an entire concrete dock. One time I found a child sized shoe from Japan on the shore. I kept onto that for a while. I first went into this film blind, but when I immediately saw the ruins in the other world--the ships and the buildings and destruction, I immediately knew what this would be about and nearly cried right then and there. This movie handles that grief from this disaster fairly well.
The story is based on the earthquake and tsunami that actually occurred in Japan on March 11, 2011. This anime movie is the most painful and sad anime movie for us Japanese people. I used google translation.
In what prefecture did you live when the earthquake hit? I may have been there! I was a U.S. Marine with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit during Operation Tomodachi(トモダチ作戦 ). 24,000 U.S. servicemembers from 4 branches, 189 aircraft, 24 naval ships. We ended up delivering over 70,000 kg of food and medical supplies, 25,000 gallons of water. It was a truly massive undertaking. Over 2 months, the scale of destruction and chaos I witnessed while helping the JSDF with search and rescue efforts were unlike anything I'd ever seen before in real life, especially at 20 years old. I remember many of us being worried of another earthquake/ tsunami happening. One of the most important things I've ever done in my life. I try to visit Japan at least once every 5 years or so now.☮
fr ....i did not watch it in cinema but even with only headphones i got goosebumps the bg soundtracks are that good....finally someone talked about it.....the part where suzume pulled souta out of that door .....gosh it's been an year since i've watched suzume yet it still hits everytime
I know you hated Daijin at some point, but he's just a cat. It's so unfair that he fulfilled his mission being a keystone that sealed the worm and protected the people for so many years. I completely understand you but, imagine trapped for so many years and finally being freed. He just wanted love. It got me after searching for explanation but now I totally understand him and this is the theory. What if the keystone is being passed by generations? What if daijin was actually once a human that has also been cursed by the previous keystone that made him into a cat. That explained why he has to pass the role of being the keystone to souta because he wanted to live again the life of being a cat. But because he saw the strong bond between suzume and souta, he had to give up his long-lost freedom and return to being a keystone; that will hold the worm for another longest years . It burst me to tears knowing that the reason why he passed the role to souta is because he thought he was being loved by suzume and that she wanted him to be her cat so he tried pursuing her. That explain why he said before lifting the curse from souta and returning to a keystone; "I can never be your cat, return me with your hands" is because He finally realized that in order for them to live happily, he needs to give up being a cat. Sadly, the movie made the viewers misunderstood him by thinking he's an antagonist. Daijin deserves love😔
Also, imagine being freed for many years and didn't get the love he deserves after his duty before returning to be the keystone again. Man, that's sad💔💔
There's another theory i've read that what if the days before the 2011 earthquake, suzume's mother was turned into a keystone? Think of this, the only reason the earthquake can happen is when a keystone was not there to seal the worm. When her mother was turned, she refused to take her responsibility to seal the worm knowing she will be leaving younger suzume all alone. That lead to another theory that what if her mother possessed tamaki the time when she found the younger tamaki crying. If you go back to the scene of sadaijin's first appearance during tamaki and suzume's heated conversation, suzume said that it was tamaki's choice to take care of her but tamaki couldn't recall it. Maybe it was her mother in the body of tamaki that spoke
i really love this movie and the trilogy made by makoto shinkai, i remember finishing my exam earlier just to catch the time it would show from school to the cinema near my house since it's a 1hr and 30 minutes duration when travelling from school to the mall, i was like experiencing the adrenaline that time so i can go immediately. i was like suzume and souta rushing to a certain place knowing that there's time limit lol. also i go home crying cause of the story in the movie.
My mom and I already watched this film on March 8th of this year, and it have a Makoto Shinkai's amazing artstyle that makes me love it, I'm even wondering if this film can be adapted into anime and expanding Suzume's story for more lore and other character's story Also when I watching this trailer in English dubbed, I was surprised that Sota is voice acted by Josh Keaton and Josh's famous role is Spectacular Spider-Man which is my favorite childhood cartoon including a cameo in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Another character that also makes surprise for me in English dub are Minoru Okabe is voice acted by Roger Craig Smith, I'm even know him for his role as the current voice actor of Sonic the Hedgehog and Ezio Auditore in Assassin's Creed 2, Brotherhood and Revelations

Such a beautiful film, Shinkai is the successor to Miyazaki
