The only Vlog I would stop watching a live football game for, and I did for this one, when I flicked over to see if there was anything worth watching on You Tube during the half time break between Brentford v Newcastle. I missed the first 10 minutes of the second half, but it was worth it.

Thanks Andrew! Yes Maida Vale is a surprising treasure trove of beautiful historic pubs. As with most of these affluent parts of London there's the constant threat of gastropubification but on this visit I really didn't get that sense. Even the very opulent looking Warrington felt gratifyingly pubby at the time of my visit.
Oh wow! Sorry about that vulgarism, but it’s amazing to see the Carlton Tavern here. I vividly recall the illegal demolition in the news and the heavy, laden feeling of despair that overcame me. I was so relieved when they found the balls to make the developer rebuild it, brick by brick. Obviously not the same as it not having been destroyed in the first place, but a great signal to those who might be considering the same. It looks like the same is going to happen with the tragic case of the Crooked House. Thank you also for acknowledging the genius that is Delia Derbyshire!

Yes it does seem like the most fitting punishment for that wanton destruction of our cultural heritage and no doubt the meticulous rebuild would have left those developers sorely out of pocket. As you say, hopefully that will give other unscrupulous property owners pause for thought in future! (Although if I'm brutally honest I'd have to say the current interior of the Carlton left me feeling a bit cold - they obviously couldn't resist F&Bing it, but I decided to just try and focus on the positives in the video...) Yes I thought of you with that mention of Delia, and I even managed to slip in a few seconds of the theme tune without the automated checks noticing! (I would have thought that comes firmly within the realms of "fair use" personally, but still...). I just spotted her name when I was researching the history of the surrounding area, given that she lived on the same street as that pub and the Radiophonic Workshop was not far away either. I don't know if she ever drank in the Eagle for sure, but it would have been her nearest pub, and there is a note on the wikipedia page that she died of complications caused by alcoholism, so it seems safe to assume she would have been in the Eagle at some point. Rather sad she went that way, as she seemed so bright and full of life and creativity in that 1965 video, and I get the sense had an incredible mind. A bit of a tortured genius perhaps?
Yet another terrific video. I enjoyed your reference to Bass and the first trade mark. The Bar at the Folies Bergeres is one of my favorite paintings. Thanks again for a well researched and produced video - you get better and better as time goes by.
Fascinating-and I haven't been to London for two decades ! At 2.36, the impressive entry to the Warrington Hotel has a piece of (?) marble let into it with the word 'croeso'; that word is 'welcome' in Welsh-seems an extraordinary thing to find in the Smoke; maybe resurrected from somewhere else as a repair ? Interesting detail, either way ! Thanks

Only been to Maida Vale once, got off at tube station then on to the Regents Canal on my walk to Limehouse...Next time I'll make a b line to some of these pubs..prince Alfred looks ace...I remember when the Carlton got illegally pulled down..looks like they've done a great job restoring it...Great vid once again John👍

I forgot that I actually bought a paperback reprint of Back to the Local before our last trip in 2018 - it's quite entertaining although maybe not the most useful pub guide for a trip 😆

Yes I think Back to the Local is a gem of a book - really nice to have that snapshot of what pub culture was like 75 years ago.

They once filmed an episode of 'The Sweeney' in The Warrington Hotel back in the late 70's. It included a bar fight and Jack Regan (John Shaw) getting shot in the leg by some escaping bank robbers.
The sources I read said that past as a house of ill repute is somewhat disputed - I definitely get the sense of a respectable pub from Gorham's writing of around that time. Although it has been suggested from Ardizzone's drawing that the lady walking up the stairs suggests something less respectable might be occurring.
If I recall correctly you suggested I head to Maida Vale at some point...? Thank you for the nudge! I had been to most of these pubs before as I used to have a friend in the area, but I don't think I fully appreciated how special they were until this visit. It really is a treasure trove!
I worked on a renovation of the Eagle when it was the Robert Browning, a Samuel Smith Brewery pub, it had a far more elaborate interior back then. Interestingly, none of the marble, including the columns is actually marble, it was a fairly plain stone that an artisan painter “marbleised” with a fine selection of peacock feathers that he used to apply the paint to the stone. The anaglypta on the walls and ceiling was “scumbled”, another old school paint effect used to add depth to the textured wall paper. Sadly, it looks like a lot of the character has been removed in the intervening years.
I'm curious if there's a Welsh connection to the Warrington? I noticed one of the tiles in the rather grand curving steps at the entrance has the word 'croeso' glazed in, it's Welsh for 'welcome'.
Yes that caught my eye too! That part of the step had a slightly different colour to it than the rest so I wondered if that might have been a more modern addition? I would be interested to hear what the reason behind that is if anyone knows...?
I have to admit I only discovered her for the first time while I was doing the research for this video but I'm now kind of in awe of her. It was veering a bit off topic for a video on pub history but I'm sure she must have visited the Eagle at some point and there was just something so captivating about her story.

Thanks! I had heard that and was going to mention it but I was worried the intro was already a bit long! I love how pub names are so tenacious like that - sometimes so redolent of a bit of local history that they jump from one location to another like that.
Very interesting video. The Warrington Hotel is a beautiful building. I expect the billiard balls at the time of the theft were ivory and far more expensive to replace than the current epoxy resin ones in use today hence the difference in price. Quickly Googling it appears ivory balls from that period can cost as much as 100 to 150 pounds each. 2000 quid for 42 is a snip! My father moved from Cork city , Ireland to Shirland Road, Maida Vale in 1935 and would have undoubtedly called into the Warwick Castle as he used the Warwick Avenue tube station frequently and also explored all the local area and beyond.
The Warrington Hotel’s website says that until recently that it did not have rooms to let. The use of hotel in the name would then be more like how hotel is used in French. In French, hotel means a building that sees frequent visitors. The meaning is broader than in English.
Ahhh thanks for that, I somehow had assumed it had always functioned as a hotel, but sounds like that's a more recent thing then. In India I've seen "hotel" is sometimes used for a business which is purely a restaurant, perhaps that has a similar root to the French?

A fascinating sortie to an area I confess to being quite unfamiliar with. Does the Warrington Hotel do rooms? I just might have to book in there in October and do a full day's excursion visiting each of these ...I adore a partitioned pub and I suspect at the end of the day out I will be on a full wobble back to the hotel. I almost regret not choosing that beer, but I knew it would actually be the same "house ale" they have at pretty much every Greene King pub, albeit with a different name in each venue.
I don't have any control over whether the ads are skippable or not, that's up to TH-cam. The total advertising revenue I have made from this video to date, with about 5k views, and 864 hours of watch time, is £26.38. Even if I ignore the cost of the beer and the transport (plus the subscriptions I have to pay for the software I use to make this), that's about a pound an hour for the time that goes into researching, filming and editing a video like this. If you can't bear the ads then there's always TH-cam Premium.
I think there's quite a gap in our accents! I actually grew up in the Midlands but have lived down south for most of my adult life and I guess I've gradually acclimatised in terms of the way I pronounce things, but now and again I forget how to say some words. Listen to the way she says "here" - it's more like "hyah" whereas I mostly say "hear" and occasionally even drop the "h" a bit. I loved listening to Delia talk about those wave generators or whatever that bank of machinery was. I got the sense that was probably a fun place to work.
Regarding Warrington. What about those stupid modern chairs and tables? They really don´t match with this tasty old classic style. Why do people have to destroy everything? Why don´t owners find an appropriate furniture? I don´t really understand this. The place as a whole is just great and they degrade it with ugly modern stuff.

In another video programme, the Warrington Hotel was once a brothel during WWII. Still very nice decor. Good weather that day for late Spring.

The former Truscott Arms on Shirland Road has renamed to the Hero of Maida, it's currently having renovation work.

The total advertising revenue I have made from this video to date, with about 5k views, and 864 hours of watch time, is £26.38.
Even if I ignore the cost of the beer and the transport (plus the subscriptions I have to pay for the software I use to make this), that's about a pound an hour for the time that goes into researching, filming and editing a video like this.

I think there's quite a gap in our accents! I actually grew up in the Midlands but have lived down south for most of my adult life and I guess I've gradually acclimatised in terms of the way I pronounce things, but now and again I forget how to say some words. Listen to the way she says "here" - it's more like "hyah" whereas I mostly say "hear" and occasionally even drop the "h" a bit. I loved listening to Delia talk about those wave generators or whatever that bank of machinery was. I got the sense that was probably a fun place to work.
Regarding Warrington. What about those stupid modern chairs and tables? They really don´t match with this tasty old classic style. Why do people have to destroy everything? Why don´t owners find an appropriate furniture? I don´t really understand this. The place as a whole is just great and they degrade it with ugly modern stuff.
