- Mathematics and Computation for a Sustainable World
Sustainability is the number one concern of the 21st century. From the mitigation of climate change, maintenance of earth’s biodiversity and eradication of poverty, to the sustainable operation of the transport and logistics systems that drive the global economy, sustainability is a challenge that needs a robust and dynamic solution.
At Cornell University, the Institute for Computational Sustainability brings together researchers within the university, as well as across the USA and throughout the world to meet these challenges. Funded by the National Science Foundation, the ICS is designed to capitalise on the gains made in computational ability, big data and machine learning, and apply it in ways that may fundamentally improve our lives and the world around us.
Founded in 2008, early ICS projects exploited the strength of Cornell’s work in Ornithology. By tracking and modelling the migration of birds, as well as other species, researchers are able to identify those habitats most in need of protection. In materials science, better modelling of new materials allows for a more cost effective and intelligent approach to the iterative design process in the development of everything from photovoltaics to new kinds of battery. In transport, ICS researchers pioneered the prediction and analysis of the movement of resources within bike-sharing networks in the United States biggest cities.
Mathematics and computation have the capacity to describe and solve the most complex of systems. At the same time, the application of state-of-the-art mathematics to dynamic, organic systems - from bike-sharing to the migration of birds - gives rise to new mathematical models and new tools. The Institute for Computational Sustainability exists to develop and utilise these tools for the benefit of society.
Very cool! Exciting things happening at cornell.
