When I was in the Marines 50+ years ago,I was in Southeasteast Asia. The locals would catch mongoose and snakes and hold fights with betting.These fights were aimed almost exclusively for US troops.The secret to their fights was the snakes were fed very well...never to be hungry.And,as most nature lovers know,after a snake eat,they like to bask and lay around for quite a while.On the other hand,they would half starve the mongoose. Then,come the time for the fights,the military folk would place their bets .Most military folk werent,at the time aware of the crooked manipulation of the creatures. The mongoose would always win,because the snakes were too well fed to have any ability to react swiftly enough to defend its self. This snake and mongoose thing reminds me of the shark dolphin myth,that dolphin are active executioners of sharks,when fact is, as many dolphin are killed by shark as shark are killed by dolphin. The myth that dolphin are great executioners of sharks is tv planted BS . And mongoose dont make out that much better.It does win most fights,but its not a given.And,mongoose arent immune to cobra venom,as sensationalizing tv shows about these critters lead viewers to believe.They just have a bit more resistance to the venom than other mammals . That said,the mongoose,if given a good bite by the cobra,can,in fact,end up on a milk carton. (I edited to correct fkn typos).
