Centre planning a network of 35 multi-modal logistics parks
India has a total road network of 5.6 million km. National highways account for 2.3% of this with a total length of 131,326 km, state highways account for 144,961 km and other roads 5.3 million km. National highways cater to more than 40% of the road traffic.
Setting up of Multi-Modal Logistics Parks (MMLPs) part of transport ministry’s Logistics Efficiency Enhancement Program (LEEP) are aimed to improve the country’s logistics sector by lowering overall freight costs, reducing vehicular pollution and congestion, and cutting warehousing costs.
“Of the 35 identified locations, 24 are situated on the national corridors planned to be taken up for development in the Bharatmala Pariyojana Phase-I,” the ministry noted in its presentation, a copy of which has been accessed by HT. It added work on the detailed project reports (DPRs) for seven locations - Nagpur, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Surat, Sangrur and Jogighopa (Guwahati) - has begun.
“The role of ministry of road transport and highways is to assist the states for the preparation of DPRs for logistics parks, the provision of road connectivity to the Multi-Modal Logistics Parks (MMLPs), the identification of potential locations, and to co-ordinate with the ministries of railways and shipping for connectivity to other modes like rail and inland waterways,” the ministry told finance commission.

If these are really being implemented by Modi Govt on ground then PM Modi can be considered as the visionary leader of modern India. Cant compare him though with Jawaharlal Nehru or PV Narasimha Rao as those were different eras. PM Modi can have a class of his own. Nehru's era came right after partition and had to build an India which never existed before as it was just a region defined by sometimes large and sometimes small Kingdoms. PVNR largely had to deal with a failed India and had to reset it back, while PM Modi had to give momentum to growth as India was coming to standstill after great growth for 2 decades starting from 1991.

Time bound development should be initiated. The project should complete before the dead line. The project should not delay even for a day. Simultaneously all parks should be allotted and should progress together and completed. Time is precious and should not waste, all the project's progress should be monitored by different agencies and directly reported to PM.

Railway seems largely ignored compare to road sector. Integrated multimodal transportation especially water ways to railways for goods transportation make huge difference in logistics cost.
