  • Daniel Schmachtenberger is a founding member of The Consilience Project, aimed at improving public sensemaking and dialogue.
The throughline of his interests has to do with ways of improving the health and development of individuals and society, with a virtuous relationship between the two as a goal.
Towards these ends, he’s had a particular interest in the topics of catastrophic and existential risk, civilization and institutional decay and collapse as well as progress, collective action problems, social organization theories, and the relevant domains in philosophy and science.
Motivated by the belief that advancing collective intelligence and capacity is foundational to the integrity of any civilization, and necessary to address the unique risks we currently face given the intersection of globalization and exponential technology, he has spoken publicly on many of these topics, hoping to popularize and deepen important conversations and engage more people in working towards their solutions. Many of these can be found here. Right now, we are living through times that have many people wondering about the end of the world. On this episode of Conversations with Tom, host Tom Bilyeu and guest Daniel Schmachtenberger engage in a fascinating discussion about social media, neural warfare, game theory, power itself, and the ways that our society has over-optimized. In particular, they talk about why it’s so important to stop trying to be right, why we need to start thinking in more complex ways, and why the real battlefield is the human mind.
    SHOW NOTES:
Daniel was home-schooled, allowed to study whatever he thought was most important [0:30]
Daniel’s parents actually referred to his family as an “experiment” [3:40]
By the time a child goes to school, civilization has already been imprinted on them [6:04]
Daniel advocates that optimization is actually a part of the problem [8:37]
Daniel details exactly why trying to optimize leads to serious problems [13:14]
Daniel talks about how to understand civilization’s history through game theory [18:40]
Some kinds of value can be extracted and lead to power, and other kinds can’t [20:57]
Daniel uses the example of COVID-19 to illustrate the problems with optimization [25:48]
How can we think in complex ways that respect the interconnected nature of existence [30:41]
It’s much easier to break things than it is to build complex systems [35:39]
Tom and Daniel discuss whether it’s possible to nudge people in the right direction [38:16]
Social media will lead us to war even though no one wants it [46:01]
Daniel and Tom discuss the connections between high school bullying and terrorism [51:12]
If you aren’t considering counter-responses, you are just being emotionally hijacked [58:56]
People’s minds are the battlefield [1:04:17]
There are no authorities that are trustworthy enough to just assume they are right [1:09:59]
Do you want to be effective or do you want to be right? [1:15:15]
Daniel explains how people become fundamentalist about things they are wrong about [1:19:45]
Debates are often not about understanding. They are just dogfights. [1:28:48]
Legitimate power is when I am trying to influence someone to be more self-directed [1:32:03]
Tom explains the relief of focusing on finding the right answers instead of being right [1:35:35]
If you want to be right, you are very easy to control. Fragile egos are vulnerable. [1:39:55]
Capitalism, the Trump campaign and Christianity have all been antifragile so far [1:42:33]

For the first time I’ve seen a human being with a mind that is so evolved and can see beyond what most people can. The fact that he is home schooled is a testament that the current system we put our children thru is failing them miserably and not giving them the critical and independent thinking necessary to understand and question our current systems. Thank you Tom for bringing out Daniel. We need more people like him. 👏👏

Well spotted @Holly ....This is the worst I’ve seen Tom....he never interrupts his guests so they can deliver a coherent lecture/talk, but it seems to me he was trying to compete with Daniels IQ, and very few can match Daniels IQ and eloquence! I’m a big big Tony fan and he’s never disappointed me until this instance of irrelevant interruptions that were pointless at best and insecure at worst! Daniels brilliance makes me both envious and the inverse of erudite in thought!

I don’t think Tom was interrupting him on purpose to confuse or compete with his IQ . I think Tom was scattered in thought and excited and this sometimes causes people to interrupt. Interesting how some people think their observations should have merit enough to publish some elementary observation , conjures up more arrogance and questioning of IQ then the accused .Pausing and kindness is a part of emotional intelligence.

I think the guest is unable to explain to teach. There are 2 skills in being intelligent. One is being intelligent and that’s it. The other is being intelligent and being intelligent enough to explain to common people. He relates the simple in a way that makes it confusing. Probably because he was home schooled and self taught and never learned socialization.

Luchia Young He teaches effectively quite frequently. He’s teaching Tom here. Count the “whoa!” moments. The data and concepts are being translated in this conversation (which you and I are only a third party observer to).
Further, he isn’t overcomplicating the simple, he is deconstructing concepts that are wrongly thought to be simple and showing how they actually fit into a ecosystem of ideas and are engaged in a chain of second, third, fourth (etc) order effects/consequences.

I think they let their own judgements about Tom's 'behavior' distract them from the actual content. Our minds can be tricky that way, but if we don't know we are doing that (distracting), we don't know we are doing that. Catch 22! So great to hear someone who understands the difference between complicated and complex.
Working in international development in Sierra Leone, it can be really hard to convince folks who want to build increasingly complicated systems (which westerners do very well) to quickly solve complex problems (which southerners intuitively understand). We need iterative approaches that take complexity into account to solve problems like hunger and teenage pregnancy.

Tony felt so insecure I think 🤔 I could be wrong but the irrelevant and rather un intellectual interruptions mean 1. he’s exposed his own insecurities or 2. was looking to trip up Daniel whose rising popularity makes it difficult for platforms like Tony’s to thrive if he can’t bring smarter guests than Daniel....I’m a big fan of Tony however on this occasion the interruptions were, to borrow a phrase, “a shame”.

It’s actually good. I’m a huge fan of Daniel. His mode of communication is writing “verbal papers” for each question. It can be a “one-pager” or a “ten-pager” and you can’t be sure once he starts going. Additionally, he doesn’t know that his mental constructs and the language he uses to transfer them lose many people in the flow of his oration.
Tom, in an effort to ground his concepts, plucks his questions out in the moment because they would likely get lost by “page three”. In fact, this is one of the better interviews because Tom makes him define words and concepts and continually attempts to explain Daniel’s ideas practically.
Most of his lectures and interviews I wouldn’t share with friends and family but this one is more accessible.

Tom regarding the question of how can we increase awareness and goal orientation toward restructuring the world for sustainability: it is actually quite simple if we flip it and see it from the bottom up. When a majority of humans have taken responsibility for their life and all outcomes they can control, we will live in a world where the path of resistance is one that functions, thrives, sustains and harmonizes and in that way the world changes as a matter of course.

    love this conversation.
to the people who are stressed out by the interruptions, there are lots of talks with Daniel that you can listen to where he is given space to unfold each train of thought completely. Personally, I felt a lot of respect for Tom, his questions, and his determination to develop a clear comprehension for himself and his listeners. How i see it, Tom clearly understands that Daniel is deeply brilliant and has had way more resource/time/capacity to think at a more complex level... but Tom showed up to the conversation honestly, exactly where he was at, asking the questions that were meaningful to him. He didn't hide his dissonance in order to look smart, or pretend to understand or agree when he wasn't clear on what was happening. This takes a lot of courage and commitment to authentic growth. I think his interruptions were often reframings of his previous questions, when he realized he didn't ask what he meant to. He wasn't going to waste his opportunity to learn what he really needed to learn from this brilliant thinker. And in doing so, I think he did a great service to his listening audience who are probably at a similar level of thought development as he is. Additionally, they get to watch Tom's learning process in real time, which is valuable meta-information.
Sure it could have been more graceful if he apologized for the interruptions and/or thanked Daniel for redirecting so frequently... but I imagine it would be pretty stimulating (potentially overwhelming) to hold a convo with someone who has such robust and grounded thinking processes for working with the most meaningful and daunting realities in the world.
Another interesting aspect of this talk... I've never seen Daniel have to pause and reflect on how to direct his thoughts. I found it inspiring to watch him slow down, synthesize what was really needed, and reweave his previous thread in a way that supported the new inquiry. My take is that Daniel enjoyed the challenge to create genuine communication with Tom. He took the precious opportunity to talk about what Tom needed to think through personally, instead of talking his theoretical shtick into a void of comprehension (like many other complexity thinkers do). Tom is an entrepreneur, inspirational speaker and thought leader of his communities, not just an interviewer. Its people like him who give their lives to help a more general public learn to think and act, that need and deserve the opportunities to refine their perspectives and tools with thinkers like Daniel. In my experience there are lots of platforms for Daniel to share his genius uninterrupted, but these are the kinds of conversations that matter more broadly. It was an honour and inspiration to watch. What I would give to ask Daniel his take on my personal path!!!

Wow! Mind blown. This was so incredibly engaging that I couldn't work until it was finished. The title of the video didn't seem to be what they really talked about. Maybe I'm not seeing the elephant in the room because there was so much to examine.

18:23 No Tom, it's not that "basically this shit is complicated." Rather, it's COMPLEX, not complicated. SELF-ORGANIZING, not contrived.

Tom, thanks for this facinating, engaging, entertaining and deeply thought provoking content...This was the best IT interview I've seen so far and I would love to see more conversations between you and Daniel!

You might learn something Tom, if you talk less and listen more. Us too.. You kept cutting Daniel off just as he was started to explain the detail behind his thinking

Tom, Please pay attention to what Johnathan replied. I also wanted to hear Daniel's explanations in completed detail and watch his thought process.
All you needed to do was ask the questions, observe, listen and let his brilliant mind flow. The conversation would have gone to an even deeper level as he finished his thoughts. A mind like Daniel's does not need skilled interview technique or direction. I am very great full to you for the introduction.
