Thanks Rachel for adding your voice to the complexities of skin tones. For myself, I find that even neutral tones of foundation still looks pink on my face. I’ve been at it for a decade, so, I welcome the beauty industry to add in a fourth category. As well, I don’t think it needs to be an either, or situation. I ask the beauty industry to do a yes, and. Yes, do deeper tones well, AND serve the fair to light olive tones as well. Thanks for your thoughts!

Appreciate your thoughts! I have started referring to my skintone as fair-light olive, because finding olive forums online and creators who talk about what works for them with green in their undertones was SO helpful for me in finally finding complexion products that were a decent match for me! Though my current best match foundation is described as a neutral (Nars light reflecting in gobi), most neutrals pull peach or pink on me. While gobi is a good shade match, I am having some issues with formula (melts off my face in the summer) and packaging (the pump is leaking like crazy) so I think I'm going to try About Face's new foundation in fair olive (which from online swatch comparisons I've seen looks like the same depth as gobi, just with a bit more green), and see how that goes...
I'm also becoming increasingly unimpressed with the whole seasonal analysis thing, not only is it a huge industry right now as you say, it's also one which seems to rely on convincing people that they're incapable of judging for themselves what they like, as if they can't be trusted to develop their own tastes, experiment, and find what works for them. You don't need experts telling you what you can and cannot wear in order to develop a personal sense of style (in fact, I think it can be detrimental).
Anyway tldr aside, you bring up interesting topics!!

Super appreciated your reminder about not falling into the trap of chasing perfection! And also your callout on thinking about who profits from the whole seasonal analysis frenzy.

First of all thank you so much for this great video. I’m sticking with neutral as I’m a fair olive leaning cool. It’s so hard to find the perfect foundation. I prefer skin tints and light coverage. All warm foundations look yellow on me and all cools look super pink on me. So I have to stick to neutral. I can use neutral cool foundations though. If I add green to warm foundations I can use them too but it’s not ideal. On a side note. Today I put on the dark purple shade out of my old too faced chocolate palette on my eyes and it turned a dark charcoal grayish color. I know the color of my skin plays a part in the color not looking dark purple. I just thought it was interesting.

Colors that I find works well on light olive… about face has a fair and light olive shade. Basma stick foundation in shade 35 disappears on my face. Blush: westman atelier in Mimi and Kjaer Weiss in inner glow are lovely. My go to eyeshade is Bobbi Brown melting point. I usually use some lipgloss or desaturated balms for lips.

Light olive skin with dark hair. I’ve found that NARS does a good job with neutral foundation. Also their Dulce Vita blush works well. Milani, when you can find it has a nice neutral eyeshadow palette called Everyday Eyes in #01 Must have Neutrals.

I have recently started looking into fair olive . My main go to is MAC NC15/NC20. However I’ve tried different undertones, see I have Mediterranean ancestry . I have a full Spanish grandmother and a full Portuguese grandmother. My grandfathers were a mix of English, Scottish, Irish, French, and welsh.
Long story short pink undertone foundation goes gray on me. Neutral foundation if balanced enough can work, but most of the time they pull peach or orange, and yellow foundations can work, but even the yellow is noticeable on my neck.
I do find that shades described as a light beige neutral with golden undertones is the best I have found. However I am intrigued by olive undertones and wonder if the reasons the other three undertones pull too peach or grey tinge my skin is because I have olive skin tone .
I talked with someone at Mac who said their NC shades have some olive base to it. She said I could wear NC15 (fair beige with golden undertone) with a bit of the powder foundation in nc20 to cancel some yellow out. She said nc 20 has more olive in it.
Anyway I might want to try a true fair olive shade to test to see if why I’m having trouble with undertones may be because I’m actually olive.

      @RachelEllenRose  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I love this!! Yes seeing comments say neutrals pulled to pink or yellow is exactly my same experience and why I wish neutral would be TRULY neutral!! I’d love to see us be able to narrow down the definition of neutral and olive so when brands start making shades they can fit as many people as possible bc it does seem so difficult. 😥 it’s such a nuanced conversation which is why I think it’s a difficult one and why I don’t like to label myself bc I don’t want to add more mud to the water but I definitely have some green and have struggles finding good shade matches but am pretty happy with the ones I’ve been able to find thankfully-I hope you can find a good match too!

    • @TracyD2

NC 25/30 pull peach/orange respectively on me. They say that undertone is golden beige but my green skin brings out the peach in it. It’s strange. The somewhat newer C shades might work better for some olive undertones. It’s more yellow leaning. Even though I’m not a strong yellow undertone, now that I’m older (58) it’s more flattering and brightening on me ( put a pin in that for later) I find for me Asian beauty matches very well if they have shades dark enough. Most of the time I mix in green or several foundations to get anything right. Enough about me. The new about-face foundation looks promising though. The subreddit OliveMUA and Fairolive are helpful for swatches and recommendations. Rituel De Fille has nice blush shades very different from what you see out there. Also I find contours work best as bronzers.

Rituel de Fille! I just tried their 3 drop serum foundation, they offer an olive/gold in several shades! You can get a sample set of 3 shades for $15. I have cool undertones with a yellow/gold overtone and rosacea. Just in case anyone is interested in another brand recommendation. Btw- I love the inclusion discussion in this video!

Oooh! I’ve yet to try their products but even the blushes hit so many colors that seem like they’d be so suited to neutral or olive undertones and muted people too!
I’m so glad you enjoyed! I hope the inclusion and anti-perfectionism is heard. Not my intent to ever exclude or undermine someone’s experience!♥️♥️♥️

I've been fascinated by color analysis for a decent 3 years now. Obviously, the trend blew up enough for me to even notice it, lol. I'm an artist and have always played with color in my work.
My goal with learning about color analysis is to simply train my eye at seeing colors better and as a photography artist you can see why I'm so fascinated with color analysis since it plays on alot of light illusions.
I also don't agree with the idea that color analysis is THE authority on our colors. I think it keeps us from exploring and expressing ourselves properly by being free to do whatever we want with color. I think color analysis is a great tool in understanding how color theory works on the human body, but it's not the final stage. It very possibly creates this stagnancy in a person's personal creative expression because of how easy perfectionism can squeeze itself into our mindsets. It goes against everything I stand for as an artist.
Thanks for making this video. It's hard to find content that talks about the nuances. ✌️

Im also very very fair olive, mediterranean, though. I think I have a cool, blue undertone and a warm, yellow overtone. Color seasons are confusing because despite my cool leaning skin (i think?) my eyes are hazel and my hair is brown with warmish tone to it. Ive always been unconciously drawn to winter shades, though. For makeup and lipstick (clothes too) my go to shades are deep and saturated, but not overly bright, berries, plums and straight up purple lipstick or deep neutral maroons. I love magenta and fuchsia as well, although its a bit more contrasting rather than harmonious lol. I want to try out coral lipstick, like MAC Vegas Volt, but I dont know if i can pull it off, honestly. Baby Pinks make me look super green but oranges wash me out. I dont believe in color analysis either. Color theory is real, but the whole color anyalisis industry is NOT the same thing!
Sheer lipsticks are great and the most easy to pull off in my opinion but I personally love a daring lip color, dark, colorful or textured (frosty). My favorite gloss ever is NYX Cranberry Pie, though. The perfect berry
I dont own foundation because of how hard getting a shade match is, but the one concealer i have I was finally able to start using it after buying a Blue pigment so that It matches my olive skin every time i want to use it instead of it looking too pink. Its a gamechanger! And it feels good to use up product instead of letting it waste

Try softening the colors. Try charcoal and off white. Black and white are very cool and very bright. I’ve found backing off off very bright colors has been great for me. Not super muted, just softened a bit.

The blush shades that a lot of companies put out are truly awful in my opinion and it’s always the same 5/6 colors. People pile that stuff on and well it’s just not for me. I don’t see anyone in real life like that. To each their own. Rant over. Heck yes on swatching videos.

I remember my sister trying to help me find a color match inside Sephora years ago (I was a beauty newbie), and she was stumped. I removed her saying I was this weird in between. Nothing seemed to match me well. Wondering if maybe I’m a fair olive as well. I’m becoming increasingly convinced. I’ve always stuck with a neutral because it’s always been closest. Ive only ever used Elf, Elate Beauty, Salt New York, and Tarte for my concealers. Foundation I still kind of struggle with a little. Haven’t found the one yet, but I’ve been using Elate even though it’s a little cooler on me. Still searching for the perfect nude. I purchased from Moira, so fingers crossed. Good video! Thanks for posting.

@@RachelEllenRose Shiseido used to make a muted avacado color corrector, maybe 15 years ago. It was a stick and I would put it over my whole face and wear it under my foundation. The color worked so well that I could use it to neutralize redness and not need to cover it with foundation or concealer. Most of the green color correctors I see on the market now look neon green in comparison.
