So, last weekend i did a video on 15 great board games on steam. I prepped all the footage for one and accidentally left it out. So, to correct that error, here is Root - Digital edition - in about 3 minutes
While it does look like an incredibly well made port, to me it lacks some of the flair that was brought by the design and popping colors of the minimalist meeples and Kyle Ferrin's design of the board. I wish he had been more involved with the art direction to make this ooze with as much style as it's tabletop counterpart. Still an awesome version.
This video made me smile! I had a feeling it was coming. :D I am hoping that more and more board games will get the attention they deserve through such well implemented digital adaptations!

Awesome game. I 100% agree with your gripe about the digital not being up to date with the physical game. I have some friends I want to get the digital version for, but I am holding on hoping they add the other factions sooner than later. Edit: as a side note, you got me to pick up Spirit Island(both digital and physical) and I had a hard time understanding everything in the physical until I tried it on the iPad. At the moment, it's one of my favorite games. I actually just ordered the two expansions today. So thanks for that =).
Been playing Root a lot on Steam. Completed about half the challenges now. My recent "trolling" strategy is playing the Tinker Vagabond, allying with the Woodland Alliance, moving WA warriors out of a certain type of clearing, going back to the clearing, then searching through the discard pile for the card that allows removing all other players pieces for that clearing, and then crafting it with my 3 hammers. Love watching the world burn while still remaining allies with WA since I don't remove any if their warriors. Sometimes I might be able to do this twice in one game. Only downside to playing the digital implentation is making my friends less competitive since the game doesn't get to the table often due to the rules overload.
I just recently purchased this on Steam. My intention was to get a more confident understanding of the actual game, which has been sitting on my shelf for several months. Nevertheless, the app is great, and I play it just to hear the soundtrack sometimes. I hope to get the real thing to the table soon.
@@3MBG Well if we're talking about the video, it goes without saying ;) For the game, I'm impressed with how they managed to create the organic feel of a wilderness environment while maintaining the spaciality of the game board
@@swishersnaaake8208 Cheers. And yeah, its slick as for a board game adaptation. They remembered the golden rule, which is as a PC game. You can make things look more interesting and engaging if you want to. Combat could have been just throwing dice.
Root is really fun. I just wished they had went for asymmetric victory points/conditions also. Just as a lot of historical wargames do. That would have opened them a lot of design space.
@@3MBG I didn't want to mention COIN games, as Root is often compared to them. But from the basic turn structure, with being eligible or not, the check-for-winner or reset a little round, most of them having two "sides", the different win conditions and the story emerging from the event cards, I see more differences than similarities. But even more traditional wargames shift victory points so that the two sides can be unbalanced but the players being able to still win the game. Fire in the Sky was my first encounter with VP like that and I loved it there.
If I recall from an AMA from... years ago (so take this with a grain of salt), the devs initially had win conditions unique to each faction, but reworked it into the first-to-30-points system early on. I can't remember the reason given, though. I've heard their first asymmetric game, Vast, had something like that? I've not played that one, though.
They are asymmetric - you all need 30 but everyone scores them in different ways (and crafting). My issue with it is that you can't remove VP like you do in COIN so someone's victory gets locked in (but the game does actually end)
Excellent video! Just be sure to pronounce the “S” in “marquise” in the future. “Mar-keez.” There’s an “E” at the end since the marquise is female, so the S gets pronounced.
@@nesssel i think it’s more likely that they wanted to do the pun, and either thought it was pronounced without the s, or they knew, but wanted to go with it anyway

Yeah, that could have been good. My game coming out has very different win conditions and its in that historic wargame model
