Our high school band played this 2 years ago for parade. One judge said "I haven't had goose bumps like this since I heard the Blue Devils play it". Very awesome compliment.
@god yeah, at least in Washington there are parades that bands get judged in. There isn't a lot to judge, but usually has a uniform inspection and a music judge.
We played this version my Senior year of high school. No one had to be asked to practice it. We were amped every single time. The third trumpets kept going up an octave. It was as hype as I have ever seen a band practice. Like the majorette’s were coaxing us on. Shouting “get it” and “let’s fucking go”. It was honestly surreal.
It's funny reading all the comments hahah I was in this quartet at the end...we definitely practiced this song MAYBE 4 times the whole summer. Sounds like dookie...BUT we were trying to sound good, we were trying to make be enjoy themselves with a throwback...and cut.
DJ P. Sorry for the late response; I think the issue is with this chart, it has to be a little raunchy...and passionate. One of the valid criticisms of the b flat vs G horn debate is B flats sound way better...but not as loud. Go back and listen to 1992 and there’s a passion and a soul to it. I’m aware you guys only had a few rehearsals and they had all summer. When you play a throwback tune, people want to hear it in a throwback manner and not a symphonic rendition.
@@ramonrincon2356 Also late, but there's absolutely a place for raunchy, messy performances. Stuff like this is absolutely the best place, it's fun to just let loose and play something cool that isn't the show, and I agree, this is something I'd rather hear like this than be sheet music perfect and played like a MIDI but with real life players. I mean if I listened to Legend of the One Eyed Sailor or When a Man Loves a Woman today, I wouldn't want it to be restrained and professional, I would want the players to show their passion while playing it, and this performance did a good job of that. You wouldn't want to go see the Madison Scouts play Malaguena and then they're stiff and sterile, you would wanna see them play it like they played it 30 years ago
I replay this nearly every day getting ready in the morning, I tell my boyfriend that I'd die happy if he hires a good portion of them to play this song at our wedding. After all, we were once band geeks haha. BD
man blue devils are the best ever.....and the high trumpet note gave me chills. i saw them for the 1st time this summer and man i got chills during the entire show
Never thought I would miss those unis! I saw them several times the week before this recording at various shows in California. Everytime I hear the 2009 show it takes me back to that trip and driving across long, dark expanses after seeing the Blue Devils!
i have seriously, without exaggeration, watched this video over 100 times. without exaggeration. and i can tell you that i don't get tired of it. it sounds to perfect!
regardless of what anybody says here Crown needs to step it up with their drumline. I may be a brass player but I know a dirty drumline when I hear one.
edboy, the Cascades are based in an area where marching band and drum corps are nearly non existent, so calling them out for being small is kind of a low blow
PC Guy I disagree. The amount of air does not change regardless of playing loud, soft, high, or low. This is apparent in lip slurs, when a musician attempts to muscle the notes, rather than use tongue arch and speed of air, they sacrifice speed and uniformity. Lip strength plays a part, but the air velocity is ultimately what enables one to play high. If you play with incredibly slow air, you'll find yourself generating pedals or incredibly soft notes rather than high full ones.
2 yrs back my school playd a version of this, almost the exact same, except for us trumpets playn in the stratosphere, couldnt play that high at the time, but i was the screamer in that song man was it fun. gives me goosebumps every time i hear it!!
My brass instructor was with BD that year, and they won championships. One of our color guard instructors was with BD this year with the championship win
We're playing an arrangement of this song for our field show this year, three of our trumpet players, one sophomore and two juniors, in high school, can nail all of those high notes. which is pretty amazing in my opinion
Amen to that brother, this video makes me sad inside. These crazy kids today will never know the joy of face melting G-Bugles, or victory gigs...sad really.
Wow, good job giving appreciation to the musicians and marchers who worked hard. Clearly they were doing good stuff if they managed to stay undefeated the whole season.
I was in Madison in 1992 and had a chance to watch all of the performances, Blue Devils performance that night was the best...still think they got screwed over....oh well. I was going to march with Phantom but I was having knee issues at that time and didn't want to risk it since I played Contra...heavy Contra + bad knee = disaster waiting to happen.
I am sorry, but there is no way in the Sam Hill that this rendition comes close to that 1992 version!!!!! G horns, screaming sops and a whole lot of sass and sex appeal knocked it out the park for me. And yes, those were my marching days!!!!!! 🔥🔥🔥🎺🔥🔥🔥
@Tuba408Bass nah i havnt yet, i did winter percussion this year and i dont have money for DCI season,,, but next ima going to try out for BD drum major
@kevinbs05 Yeah, there was one of my friends who marched Music City, the new drum corps from Nashville, TN. He really liked the atmosphere of it, because nobody was getting actually getting upset.
This is a slightly less sultry version than was introduced in 1992 which literally cooked and was the best chart of that season. I do think the musicians of this version play with greater maturity of tone quality than those days of yesteryear.
i honestly think part of it was because they were just stuck in a concert ark the entire time. had they been jamming out the entire time, i think itd be a hell of alot more fun.
BACcontrabass it's cuz this ain't their main show and I believe this was for a warmup or something around that, they didn't want to lose chops I assume
Phenomenal! And on the camera-work, eh, doesn't bother me! The sound was captured better than I've heard a good many cameras pick up audio from a marching band/corps!
@kevinbs05 I know what you mean. My cousin marched Carolina Crown and they were taught to respect every corps. but he said that even on finals night that BD members wouldn't even speak to any other corps in a respectful tone
Our high school band played this 2 years ago for parade. One judge said "I haven't had goose bumps like this since I heard the Blue Devils play it". Very awesome compliment.
Congratulations
You had judges for parades?
@god yeah, at least in Washington there are parades that bands get judged in. There isn't a lot to judge, but usually has a uniform inspection and a music judge.
what a compliment
that's because it is a band difficulty piece. GO BD

is it bad that when i listen to marching bands this good i get tears in my eyes?
hell no, its bad when you dont
You're not the only one! 💜
You're not the only one
We know what good music is
One it's a drum corps and two of course not

Wish my band had good trumpets like that one of the best band songs i have ever heard.
I've watched this no less than 20 times and it only gets better.
regardless of what anybody says here Crown needs to step it up with their drumline. I may be a brass player but I know a dirty drumline when I hear one.
same here dude they got a gift winning with a dirty drumline
Cascades has the same problem, only with a smaller corps and less talented musicians.
edboy, the Cascades are based in an area where marching band and drum corps are nearly non existent, so calling them out for being small is kind of a low blow
show design
it was so amazing ..
you deserve to be the champion!!
go Blue Devils ..
Hey guys, I'm glad you like our performance. You probably didn't know but I'm the 4th trumpet player. i helped with the quartet:)
this is a song that i could listen to 1million times and not get tired of it. blue devils rock!!!
This is my fav. song that ive heard any dci band play..this song has got groove yet is musical at the same time.!! i love it!
Amazed with them. How even they reach the high Bs and Cs
Lots and lots and lots of lip strength and air. Its not the speed of the air either, its the volume of the air.
PC Guy I disagree. The amount of air does not change regardless of playing loud, soft, high, or low. this never gets old... it just gets better every time I listen to it!!!

the trumpets are godly!!! how can you not like it
blue devils amazing and this is one of the best performances in my opinion
I dont think i could conduct this without a smile on my face. Beautiful
that lady on the percussion, i love her smile.
It's a contagious smile :)
I get cold chills every time.... The trumpets are just amazing
Beautiful song. Nice swing to it!!! You would make Percy proud. Cheers to all from the Ole Toad in Canada.....
Ahhh, the good days, normal uniforms and dynasty drums. Almost brings a tear to my eye.
After a few corps had characters on the field, other corps had t-shirts made (including BD) declaring the death of drum corps...in 1971.
love blue devils, we played this in my uk drum corps too
fuck off mikeeeeee
The best of blue devils!!!
one of my favorite songs. amazing listening to it
Haha I love how everyone looks like they're having fun in this. Congratulations regardless of rank. This was beautiful.
i really love this blue devils piece...
this is such a classic... they play it to perfection!
.... and an INCREDIBLY high brass heavy corps, even being a trumpet player, there needs to be more support there
I get goosebumps EVERY time I watch this!
“PLAY LOUD!”
BD Brass Section 2009: K bet, watch this...
47 people don't know what happens when a man loves a woman.
LastToBackDown u made my day XD

ooh i love this song and i hope soo much that one day i´ll also be a blue devil *-* great video^^
I can't even express how much i love this
1:48 the third trumpet looks like the guy who did the scream in 2012 in crossmen?????
My brass instructor was with BD that year, and they won championships. One of our color guard instructors was with BD this year with the championship win

Great video, thanks! Chokes me up!!!
Great Job!

This is so good.
This song makes me super happy. Idk why. I'm just weird I guess. But LISTEN TO THAT TRUMPET!!!♥️♥️♥️
this made me smile really big :D
I love it, this remember me when i'm in a marching band😢😢😢
Agree with the '92. G bugles and a rocking hornline!!!

10,000 of the views are mine. this is just amazing
this, is just so good.
HOLY FREAKING CRAP THAT TRUMPET SOLO
amazing quality

Saw the original in August of 199_ in Charlotte, and WOW, what a HOT SUMMER NIGHT!

"PLAY LOUD!"?
An old BD fan... probably wants to experience it like it were played on a G bugle.
I thought he was saying “we will”. I just figured it was an alumni thing or just a really excited fan.
So perfect The Blue Davils
BD supporting the right way to love. i love it
Goosebumps every damn time.
Makes me smile every time :)
@Tuba408Bass nah i havnt yet, i did winter percussion this year and i dont have money for DCI season,,, but next ima going to try out for BD drum major
@2E0N0W2 it allows them to have more air causing them to play the note with more power. Blue devils do it a lot but idk about other Corps
A tear man Soooooooooo FREAKIN SWEET
Goosebumps!
In Vegas BABY!
@kevinbs05 Yeah, there was one of my friends who marched Music City, the new drum corps from Nashville, TN. He really liked the atmosphere of it, because nobody was getting actually getting upset.
THIS IS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!! and im in a trditional style marching band
wayne downey dose another incredible job with these guys!!
i miss these uniforms...
Yessir, the ones that were so blue they looked purple. With shakos with black plumes
thanks to the blue devils our high school's song is autumn
@fazjin theyre actually an independent group out of Concord California in the northern San Francisco Bay Area
This is a slightly less sultry version than was introduced in 1992 which literally cooked and was the best chart of that season. I do think the musicians of this version play with greater maturity of tone quality than those days of yesteryear.
actually my video of Bama doing the same arrangement is above in "video responses". Thanks!
never a dull moment, Bluuuuuuueeeeee!
Mark Anthony Pinon wrong corps buddy
Yikes! Great performance nonetheless
@FridayTN ive never seen a high school band this good buddy
wish i had a video of the '04 hornline with Scott Dean wailin' out those high notes.... Dude had some chops.....
I have no idea whether of not this is an original comment, but its fucking hilarious. Thank you sir for making me laugh.
Have you seen this years? It's pretty mesmerizing.
So....Perfect!!!!!~
This is the squarest I think I've ever seen BD play.
i honestly think part of it was because they were just stuck in a concert ark the entire time. had they been jamming out the entire time, i think itd be a hell of alot more fun.
Unfortunately it's more because this is a lame arrangement that sucks all the fun out of the brilliant 1992 arrangement.
BACcontrabass it's cuz this ain't their main show and I believe this was for a warmup or something around that, they didn't want to lose chops I assume
This makes me miss G-Bugles EVEN more than before.
one word: Epic
Look for "Blue Devils When a Man Loves a Woman Last 2 Runs 1992.mpg " to see how it's SUPPOSED to be done.
oh god.... listening to those trumpets nearly killed me at the end, my ips hurt from just listening to that!
this year was good, but u are right. 92 was IT. I remember seeing them on tour and they had a great hornline.
Phenomenal! And on the camera-work, eh, doesn't bother me! The sound was captured better than I've heard a good many cameras pick up audio from a marching band/corps!
Their brass is so beautiful
I LOVE DRUM CORPS!!
@kevinbs05 I know what you mean. My cousin marched Carolina Crown and they were taught to respect every corps. but he said that even on finals night that BD members wouldn't even speak to any other corps in a respectful tone
