      Justine- Next time Ron has a cold or a deep cough, you can make him a "mustard plaster" and yes, its period correct. Grind up some mustard seed into a powder and add about half as much flour. Mix on hot water, a little at a time until the mixture resembles pancake batter. Lay a clean cloth flat and spread this mixture on 1/2 of the towel, pulling the other side of fabric over the paste. Lay your patient on either his back or his front and lay the pasted fabric on the chest of the back. Leave on about 30 minutes. Repeat as needed. So glad Ron is doing much better.
      In your own stores there, do you keep many wild herbs? Elderberry cough syrup is also PC as is mullin. Peace out!

    I hope you both recover quick! I learned to make a mustard plaster when I was a new bride. My husbands Grandmother tought me. I think she was born in the late 1890s You took a couple tablespoons of flour and a couple tablespoons of mustard powder and add super hot water to make a paste. Spread the hot paste on an old tea towel wrap the towel into thirds. The mustard will stain the towel so be sure it’s something you never plan to use again. Then wrap that into a old towel. Put it on the affected chest. It basically keeps the chest really warm for a long time. Then you drank a couple hot Toddies made with lots of booze to forget how awful you feel.

Cinnamon and barley tea was another thing she would do with a touch of brandy or rock and rye. Gee it felt like I stepped back in time to Nana's home. Dear Justine, In the Soviet Union, we used mustard plaster in the 1980s when I was a child. It was bought at a pharmacy. Plasters were applied to the chest and back for a few minutes. (that is, closer to the lungs). this is an irritant that should cause a rush of blood, and strengthen the fight of the immune system against the disease. They are not applied to the head.

      They used that in America too, until allopathic medicine took over in the 1930s and declared everything else "quackery." Boiling citrus peel, pith and all, for several hours and then drinking the water sweetened maybe with some honey, is a powerful cure.

I'm not sure about putting cinnamon sticks up your nose, but ginger syrup is very good to use; especially if you add fresh lemon and honey. Not sure about the mustard plaster and bath. I think back then they were still operating on the idea of the four humors. The barley water is actually very nutritious and gentle on grumpy bowels. I don't think I could survive a cold without oranges, tylenol and chicken soup. And I can't imagine being ill with a stomach flu with no indoor plumbing. Everything that Justine tried to do to keep him from getting sick was to no avail. A change of clothes, warm blankets, a nice warm fire, and a warm drink could not stave off the cold that was coming. Ron you stay in bed and do everything that Justine tells you to do. You’re both so lucky to have each other.

      Actually all of it is very helpful in tea’s like ginger which soothes tummy and is an antiviral. Mustard makes a great poultice to put on the chest for cough and congestion. I still use these when my family is sick. Candied ginger helps upset tummy as does candies dried papaya. Many different teas help different health issue’s and fever.

    Poor Ron looks sick IRL!! What a good sport for doing this and thankfully Justine is a good lady for taking care of you. I think in this day in age, we need to go back to more natural remedies for colds, etc. Hope you both feel well soon.

    • @janicem9225
      @janicem9225 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, Ron IS actually sick with cold or this plague in real life, so it was easy for him to portray someone who would have been ill in that time period.
      And he and Justine are very good sports, to be suffering like this, and STILL making their video.
      I know I wouldn't be able to do it, as I'm just awful when I get sick, (which is often, due to having several chronic illnesses) and it isn't pretty. Lol
      I don't know if Justine is really ill or just acting, as she didn't say, (I think she might really be ill as well).

    Willow bark the inside part of it where it is still green, fresher the better. pound to a paste
    and make a "tea" of it. something like 1 part bark to 5 parts water.

    but it is a good remedy for headache and body pains

    The alchohol will make you sweat the fever, lemon honey and hot tea helps the throat. I'm not sure what ginger does. The mint tea helps you breath, however you can boil it and breath in the steam that helps to. Good luck and I'm praying God's many blessings and grace for you both.
