Tom Waits. The evolution of this songwriter is a marvel to behold. Great choice but this song was very early in his career. For his more experimental albums I’d try Rain Dogs and Franks Wild Years. Great reaction.

Tom Waits is one of my favorite songwriters. He may take a bit of getting used to as his voice get much "rougher" on subsequent albums, but it is worth it. His music is as meaningful and powerful as any other artist I have every come across. Listen to Small Change and Rain Dogs.

Tom Waits had a girlfriend, Rickie Lee Jones, who later won a grammy for best new artist in 1979 or 1980. I recommend Last Chance Texaco by Rickie from her first album in 1979.

My suggestion for the next Tom Waits song you should visit would be to print out his discography and throw a dart and that should be your next song because any one of his songs are brilliant. If you want to learn more about him, check out his interviews on the old David Letterman show. There are quite a few of them through the years and he is just one hell of a funny guy. He's also a character actor and has been in a few films.

All the things you were expecting to hear from Tom Waits are fairly accurate in my experience, but remember this was one of his first songs, and it's a relatively normal folk rock song. He definitely gets more out there--musically, vocally, lyrically--as his career progressed.

My favorite line from an interview of Tom Waits from the 1970s:

An artist in the same vein, who use to be Waits' lover, was Ricky Lee Jones. I saw her in Seattle in 1978, and she has the same gin-soaked vibe.
My favorite line of his is, "I'm so horny the crack of dawn better watch out".
Ricky Lee's big hit was "Chuck E's in Love".

Daniel .... Step Right Up and Small Change.... are quintessential Tom Waits pieces. Small Change is storytelling at it's best and Step Right Up is Tom's take on salesmen/conmen. (With an excellent jazz combo)
There will undoubtedly be other suggestions as he has been around and doing his thing for over 40 years
Nighthawks At The Dinner is pretty damn fine too

You never know what you're going to get from Tom from one song or album to the next. "Raw" is a good description. One of the most brilliant songwriters you will ever encounter. A interesting performance artist too. A lot of material about the soft underbelly of the human experience from the seedy parts of town.

Tom waits is a poet who can reach farther into your heart than any other to find those items you thought you'd lost. He's also the poet who makes all other poets run home and hide under their beds. And wet themselve.
Tom Waits is "a little misunderstood" by a magnitude of oceans of misunderstood. Tom's a troubadour.
Give a listen to BLUE VALENTINES to hear his range on one disc.
Tom Waits has written the most heart rendering ballads i've ever listened to. And some of the most menacing missives ever penned and put to music. I hope you'll take a long tour. Bring armor and a sense of humor; you'll need them both.

This is pretty early Tom. He grows and experiments. He's up there for me just after Dylan and Cohen when it comes to his songwriting skills. While I like this song, it does little to highlight his overall talent, however. I do hope you continue forward and explore more Tom Waits. Perhaps dipping into a song or two from each of his albums will give you a sense of his range and growth as you go. Tom can make you laugh, cry, and rip your heart out. He's worth the journey.

Tom Waits is best heard alone, late at night with a pack of Kents, a bottle of bourbon and a deep sense of regret.
edited to add : If Tom Waits is underrated, I don't know how he got those Grammy awards. Also check out how many folks have covered his music. Musicians know him even if the public didn't.
edited again to add: The first time I heard Tom Waits a friend played "New Coat of Paint" on his stereo in a darkened room. He next played "Ride of the Valkyries" because I had never heard that either. The first time hearing music on a good stereo system is almost as amazing as hearing music the first time on a good set of headphones.

In 1977 a friend of mine (a writer for RPM magazine Canada) took me to see Tom Waits in concert. It was at a small theatre in downtown Toronto. On the stage was a grand piano with an old fashioned street light beside it. The concert was amazing and intimate because of the venue - like sitting in a living room listening to a friend entertaining us. To make the evening even better was when my friend took me with him for his interview with Tom, post show. Yes, he sounds like he gargles with sandpaper but was a very engaging man, taking his time answering my friends questions. Such fond memories of this concert.

Well done for poking your nose into the Tom Waits rabbit hole!
He's not your usual pop artist. He's, as someone else said, a Troubadour in the most real sense.
At or very near Bob Dylan in his songwriting ability.
I saw him on a day time tv show (Merv Griffin or something like that) in the mid 70's, just as he was releasing his first album. He looked to me like one of Jack Kerouac's traveling buddies from the early 50's had time-travelled to (then) today! I thought he was amazing and he continued to amaze from that point forward. (I took my girlfriend to see him in those very early days, at a small club in Connecticut. Lots of bluesy, jazzy greatness.
An early fave of mine from around that time is (Looking for) The Heart of Saturday Night. Great song.
I think of his songs (many of them) as more creating an atmosphere, rather than telling a story...
The best description of his voice I've ever seen is: His voice was described by critic Daniel Durchholz as sounding as though "it was soaked in a vat of bourbon, left hanging in the smokehouse for a few months, and then taken outside and run over with a car".
From Wikipedia: "Waits described his voice as being "the sand in the sandwich".
I just looked at Wikipedia's discography of T.W. and there is so much, I recommend you start early and go forward from there. He started early, you should too.
    Cheers, Daniel!

I love Tom Waits music, his lyrics are so great, he is an amazing poet, He uses words like Banana Moon and Swizzle Stick Legs are two that come to mind quickly. On this same album is a song called Martha that is perhaps my favorite love song ever. When I listen to it I am stunned that he was only about 16 or 17 when he wrote it. Thank you for opening your mind to Tom, his gravely voice gets me every time. BTW, I think he was about 20 when he recorded this song. Tom's character/stage persona if you will, is that of a hobo of sorts, a rambler, a man with no real home and his music rather reflects that as himself or the character in his songs. Yes there is a lot of darkness in his songs but most of it is laced with a degree of humor or at least a bit of almost fond reflection or irony. This album was Tom's first and was produced by a man named Jerry Yester who was a well known folk musician at the time.

OK... I actually stayed up all night trying to come up with a few songs that might show the range of Tom Waits. Yeah, I went down that rabbit hole.
I narrowed it down to 6 must hear songs, trust me there are many more.
    A) Sheer bad@ss songs
    1- Heart Attack and Vine
2-A Sweet Little Bullet from a Pretty Blue Gun
    B) you may have heard these covered but you should hear the original.
    1) Jersey Girl
    2) Time
    C) beautiful and genius
    1) Ruby's Arms
    2) Strange Weather
Please let me know if you got this, took a few days to get to it. I don't consider Old 55 as representative or near the top of his body of work.

The title song of his 72 album, Blue River, has Joni Mitchell harmonizing. It’s a beautiful album by a wonderful songwriter. Many people, including Dylan, have recorded his songs. He harks back to early Greenwich Village, NYC 1960s folkies, and was on The Festival Express with Janis Joplin and the Grateful Dead. He’s 78, still tight friends with Joni, still performs. A film of his life recently came out called SongPoet. Check it out. Daniel since you like poetic songwriters, I think you’ll love his music. His voice is lovely and he’s always been very easy on the eyes.Still is.

Tom Waits is the best "almost famous" artist ever. You can go on a journey with him through his career. After this he went much more grovelly with his voice. "Tom Trauber't's Blues", "My Piano Has Been Drinking" and "Step Right Up" are great songs from "Small Change." You need to take the journey with him because if you go right to some of his middle work like "Rain Dogs," or "Frank's Wild Years" it'll be like walking into the middle of the movie. He's one of the last truly American Originals. To me, he's up there will Miles Davis, Johnny Cash, and Elvis Presley. Take the journey with him.
