Hi, Linda. As a landscape architect, I will offer one opinion. The process that is depicted in the film is the same as with residential spaces albeit a different scale. Design is problem solving through spatial, programmatic, maintenance, budget criteria while conveying your very personal POV. Above all, you should chemistry with your LA. They should ask questions about your criteria and then let them bring their craft to bear. Be clear with your opinions and what you need visually to make decisions. Many times, projects can turn into the "make me happy" scope of work since there is undefined expectations and goals. Design is an iterative process always going back to your original dream, purpose, and character. In selecting an LA, ask questions about their process so you know how you will travel to that finished destination. I would encourage you to make everything multi-task. Only put lawn where you will use it. Use regional, native plants and supplement with ornamentals if you must. Try and create habitat for pollinators! Do not be afraid to be different from your neighbors if they have ubiquitous and underperforming spaces and landscapes. Best of efforts!
