    Hi David,
    This is my second season for my Fire Light Tidbit Panicle Hydrangeas. After trimming for the second year in late February (I'm in St. Louis, MO) the amount of blooms have doubled this summer! Absolutely amazing! I have them in full afternoon sun in my front yard and all of the evening walkers that pass-by always stop and let me know how beautiful my bushes are looking this summer. I've taken your advice about extra water when it reaches temps in the mid to upper 90 degrees. A week ago they've started taking on their pink color and hopefully this fall we'll see the dark red colors. Thanks for your advice David, it sure has paid-off.

      David was thinking (and describing) how a plant's roots reacts.
      So stay tuned, because there's probably more "Davidisms" coming.....

    David, this is probably the BEST video - explanation, technique and presentation (video) wise - that I’ve seen regarding proper maintenance and preparation of the macro type hydrangeas. Top drawer! If one were to inherit some hydrangeas - to which their type and name were unknown - is there any, let’s say, acid-test available to assist in determining/confirming whether the hydrangea is a macro or panicle other than leaf size and overall flower shape?🇨🇦

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you, that is kind of you to say so. It is great to know that you found this video helpful.
      To tell them apart, you really only have to look at the flowers and leaves. The panicles will have predominantly white, conical shaped flowers in summer. Whereas the Mopheads or Bigleaf types will have flatter, rounded shaped flowers that could be shades of pink, blue, white, red or purple shades, and they typically flower earlier.
      And, if you look carefully at the close up segments in our various videos you will see that the leaves on the H. macrophylla types are wider, more rounded and have coarsely serrated edges (like the teeth of a saw). While the leaves on the panicle types are usually smaller, more shield shaped and the saw edges are much smaller and finer.
      Thanks for watching and chipping in with your much appreciated comments.
      Here's a link to our website that contains pictures of 122 different Hydrangeas: grownbyoverdevest.com/splant/?_sfm_genus=Hydrangea, so maybe this will help you identify the ones you have too.

    Me looking at my hydrangeas as they fade and thinking “ there’s new steams on old wood. Do I cut and where?” Enter Dave!!!!🎉

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      If you have the same sort of (large leaved) Hydrangea, you should see two types of stems.... New young stems springing from near the base, and then as you mention, older stems with new stems sprouting from them.
      With these, if you rewatch the video at around the 12 minute mark, you will see David start at the tip, and then follow the stem back to about 1/3 of the way down the stem. And then prune at that point (taking off the top 1/3 off).
      Then you will see how he trims these young growths to two sets of buds.
      This removes the old faded flower heads, shortens the old stems, opens up the center of the plant to relieve congestion, and allow more air movement, and stimulates new fresh growth, that then grows out to set new buds for next year.
      So, when you get a chance, we suggest you watch the video again, and if necessary, even re-watch it until you get a feel for the procedure.
      That's the nice thing about our videos, you can watch, pause, and even replay, and revisit them as often as you like.
      Just remember David's opening statements, where he stresses that normally these types of Hydrangeas don't need a whole lot of pruning, and when you do decide to prune them, try to do as soon as possible after flowering because that leaves the longest possible time for the new growth to set new buds for the the next year.
      We hope this helps.

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for watching. The treatment of Hydrangea serrata types is similar to these macrophylla ones, they don't need much pruning either unless they become congested, loose vigor, or overgrown. So if you need to prune your plants, just follow David's suggestions and you can't go too far wrong.

    I watched this yesterday and then dreamed about pruning my endless summer hydrangeas. However, if I do this at the end of July, I’m removing heads that just bloomed at the end of June and miss the glory of the season. (Northwest Michigan, zone 6). I already follow the plan for removing old stems from inside and snipping short non-productive stems from the top. I’m wondering how late in the season I can do this? Our first frost is mid to late October.

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Remember, that they don't normally need much pruning, so unless your plant is getting too big or losing vigor and not doing so good. It is probably unnecessary to prune it. But, if you have to prune it, take David's advice and try to snip out a proportion (or at least some of the old flower heads) as soon as they begin to fade and begin to take on browning shades. It is difficult to predict any hard and fast dates because of the several factors including annual changes in your local climate and growing conditions. So, David's advice would be to try to do it ASAP after flowering which may include (if you have to) sacrificing a little bit of the last part of the display. Finally, bear in mind that if your plant is badly overgrown and you opt to prune it harder and perhaps even later, the worst that can happen would be for it (or parts of it) to miss a flowering season. Once it grows out, and gets another summer's growth, it will be back to making plenty of new buds again.
      We hope this helps.

      @@OverdevestNurseries thanks for the input/advice. These hydrangeas are 15-20 years old, have
      lost their vigor, and have 2ft woody stems which host floppy green stems with many blooms. Most take a west wind and would be on the ground if I did not put support on the east side. Also, they have very little, if any, interior growth. I’ll experiment with some selective pruning to see what difference I can make

      Have you subscribed to our channel?
      If you haven't, you might like to think about it, because once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video (which we are doing all the time), you will find that they will turn up automatically in your feed.
      And, as you find our videos helpful, it would be great if you could kindly share the links with your friends and click the "like" button too, because that will help other people find out about the information as well.
      And, now that we are in the midst of the main planting season (spring through late Fall) we try to encourage everyone to visit our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/.
      They are located all over our Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern region, and that's where you will find all sorts of beautiful, tried and true and cutting edge, top performing selections, so be sure to stop in regularly throughout the seasons because there will be a steady stream of fresh shipments coming in weekly.
