  • I just discovered the built in decoder. I'm sure it was always there. But if I missed it, others probably did as well, so I thought I'd show this feature.

Hi Kevin! The "garbage" is encoded coordinates that give more detailed GPS locations. Just dropped in to say hi. 73, KEØOG

the weather like in you can also make it into a vertical slot and that will give you horizontal polarization,

1:20 in the video "Automatic Position Reporting System". I'm still trying to retrain my brain to refer to APRS by it's proper name - Automatic Packet Reporting System. Most people use APRS for position reporting, but it can send any information in the packet.
Thanks for letting us know about gqrx decoding packet radio. That was news to me, and very welcome news. I wish gqrx had a built-in POCSAG decoder, although your previous video on that is easy enough to follow with a little bit of command line effort.

Really enjoyed the video, I think I'll be having a look at that SDR software program to use with my RTL-SDR usb unit.
I've came across the same issue with someone accidentally coming through a 70cm repeater. I used my handheld, Mobilink unit with my Android phone and logged all the data and check who it was. I found out that the person was flying a private plane and had accidentally switched his handheld on some how, I found out this after he replied to an email I sent him, he was amazed I logged the packet info, the packet transmissions were going through the repeater for the best part of 1hr till he was out of range. Cheers, Adam VK2YK

Maybe a future video on an explanation of the whole coded msg. What each character or set of symbols mean. I'm not doing packet, but if I was going to use the embedded sub program I'd like to know what it all meant. Keep them coming. Always enjoy your videos, and even occasionally, accidently, learn something.

yeah Ive been trying to find the same thing. I get the from person a to person b via something else. Is that via something the digipeater? I kinda get the WIDE- stuff being the number of "hops" the message can take. I think the PID = F0 means its text. I think?

There’s also a demodulator in SDRAngel that does this.

      Hey Kevin!:
It's been a while since I was on packet. Big thing here is something called VARA and it's faster than 1200, what with changes from baud rates to band width instead I guess u can get it really moving on HF as well. Just a little hello, I heard temps going through the roof. When u wanna visit the Pacific NW? Great summers here ! 73's

Packet Radio networks still exists in some areas around the U.S. , many of them are relegated to Ecomm.

what else does the AFSK1200 decoder tool work with? The only examples I see are for APRS. Are there other types of messages you can capture like this?

Take a look at YAAC also. Works great on Linux as well. Under active development for APRS. I'd put the URL but those usually get tossed on TH-cam comments.

Hi Kevin, thanks for another interesting video. I think the gobbledegook might be MIC-E data (per www.aprs.org/aprs12.html) perhaps. Cheers Julian GM7MTK

Must be in the zeitgeist or something, about a week ago I was playing with my SDR and decided I wanted to decode the APRS packets flying around... Gqrx didn't actually work for me, but I may have been having antenna problems at the time.

I am using a Realtek RTL2838UHIDIR with a NooElec upconverter. I have it connected to a 168' long wire antenna. I'm using gqrx. I cannot figure out how to configure gqrx to use the upconverter to listen to HF. I can't hear anything on HF at all, ever. This is so discouraging. Can you please explain to me how to set up gqrx so I can hear something on hf? All I ever wanted to do it download a weather fax.

Thanks for that tip. I was reluctant to using that feature as the crash was annoying. I heard its fixed in the latest, but not in the repos yet. Although Im confused, they claim v. 2.11.5 out on 2018 May 17, gqrx.dk/category/news fixed the issue, but not mine. v.2.12.1-2 as per Manjaro linux. Anyway, One trick that i find supper handy is the ability to move the little windows in the app. Just grab the top handle and slide them around next to each other so there all open. No more switching from tab to tab. :)

What about turning a pictures into Base64 and sending that so they can decode it back into Base64 and them back to the picture, that bug that you found needs to be rooted out of the package pronto.

Greetings and Hello from the Fort. GQRX looks very interesting and googled it, but found designed for Linux. I don't have Linux on my machine but do have Windows. Looking for a W indows version but seems to be hiding from me. Is there a windows version? KG9FM

Linux is super fun and easy to use. Just download Linux Mint. Write the image file to a usb drive as a bootable image. Google instructions, really easy. Boot you computer from the USB port. The computer will run off the USB stick and won't touch your hard drive. You will be running Linux in a live environment. Check it out. When you take the thumb drive out of your computer and reboot. Your system is back to normal. Linux is great and free!
