My mom's friend got a Šarplaninac because she lived in a forested area with bears (in Slovenia); to keep her safe while she took a walk. I remember we once went on a walk with him, her, my mom and I, and despite it being the first time we met him, the whole walk he would instinctively go ahead of us, check if the coast was clear, then wait till we passed him and check again, over and over, till we came home. I heard of the one I owned and knew I needed one, we planned to have land but also have other dogs, and children come over often. Also being a dog trainer it was suchh an amazing experience to own such an amazing dog with such a good well rounded temperament. If given the opportunity in the future and with the right lifestyle I 100% want another sarp. I love the stubborness at times and the immense patience and love that they have.

We have two tiny dogs and our neighborhood Šarplaninac is sooooo gentle to them and protects them from everything. Every Šar I've ever met is a real sweetheart.
Romeo certainly was a gentle giant, and a gentleman as well. It must have been a pleasure to hang out with him once he got outside. He really looked as though he was enjoying your back yard.
Hi from Montenegro. We were lucky that Bucko - Šarplaninac was living with us for 9 years. He was not our dog. He was member of our family. This is dog for kind people with strong mentality. This dog will not accept you and will not listen to you just because you feed him. This is by far the most intelligent dog I have ever seen. Bucko attacked snake that was approaching my kids in backyard. He gets bitten and died 2 days after.
We had Šarplaninac dog. He was the most gentle giant, but also very protective, especially of my brother and me, as children. Once he bit a man, who made a wrong move towards our mom. Greetings from Serbia. ❤
These dogs in the Serbian mountains protect sheep and other domestic animals from wolves. For protection, they have a metal collar with spikes around their necks, two or three dogs chase away a whole pack of wolves...
I had a Šarplaninac for 13 years. Trust me when the spring comes, its hair is EVERYWHERE. Still a gentle, good, and very loving dog, always ready to give its life protecting his owners.
I lost it at the lick of approval. He's a perfect angel and a gentleman. I'm glad he gets to live somewhere he can exercise those big bones (and his big shepherd brain!), he looks very healthy and handsome.
I had the pleasure of meeting TWO of these lovely dogs on a clients property and they are absolutely lovely, beautiful and kind dogs with a definite undertone of " this is my house and MY family" Very impressive breed!
Yey, I am from Gora, located at the Sar Mountain and we have many puppies running around. They are the cuties most loyal dogs . This video actually made me cry.
His face when you asked "Ready for a towel-dry?" was hilarious. That was totally a face saying "But...I already _shook._ That's enough, right? Am quite dry!"
I am from Macedonia, and this breed has a mythical status in my country. Here, you can hear a lot of interesting, sometimes impossible stories. I have seen a lot of Sharplaninec, but this one is especially beautiful.

Oh my God I grew up with one of these! His name was Urban, and he guarded the village my mom was from! He is one of the reasons I love dogs so much, because he has fought wolves several times; but the moment he would see us kids, he would lie down like a giant rug and let us climb all over him. They are awesome dogs, although they are more high maintenance than people would think and honestly, not city dogs at all.
imo None of the Livestock Guardian Dogs should ever be kept in city or suburb but only in the countryside where they can do the work that their thousands of years of culture and genetics demand. They are outdoor dogs that are meant to bark loudly for signaling. They are independent thinkers. Trying to curb those traits to accommodate city/town living harms these dogs.
Those dogs thrive in the nature surrounded by wildlife, city is not for them. My grandparents had one in Serbia they lived in the mountain, he was the best companion you could ever wish for, loyal and great with us kids, but fierce at protecting us from dangerous situations and animals.@@victoriabaker4400
@InTimeTraveller I don't know, corgi's are high up there next to the German sheperds and huskies. They are always wildin', all dramatic and difficult. I can't blame her for not grooming corgi's too often (though she has 2 or 3 corgi videos to my knowledge). Not sure if there's more in her videos 3 or 4+ years back though.
I had a Šarplaninac for my entire life up till I was 17, her name was Sasha. In my opinion, with the proper socialization and training early on, it is by far the best dog breed out there. It's nice to see recognition for this breed.
We had Šarplaninec in the family, he was very nice, ran away, and could usually be found at the local kindergarten playing with the children (and didn't want to go home) 😍
I knew a dog that would go out and find a home anywhere it stopped. The dog had a different name depending on where he was. It was incredible. Unfortunatly someone poisoned him. It was such a smart dog, it was a shame.
@@Maob08 I know a pulin dog who found 2 different "owners" to take care of him. He is very polite dog, and he always signals when he is going to the other family at the opposite side of the village. And don't let his antics with the hose and his good looks deceive you. If you are his owner and you're being attacked he'll use lethal force, I guarantee it.
A mellow fellow that turns into a snarling, flesh ripping fur missile when necessary. What a shame it would be to have a dog like this confined to a small yard, with occasional walks on a leash, because an ill-informed person wanted a cute floofy dog. Working dogs need a purpose in life and are most definitely happiest when they’re on the job.
This video made me cry. My beautiful Šarplaninac passed away earlier this year at the age of 13. He was the most loving and loyal dog I ever had and I miss him so much! I was very surprised to see this breed in this video, they’re native to Serbia and rarely kept outside of the Balkans!
My condolences on the loss of your pooch. Thirteen is quite a good long life for a large dog, so I can only assume that you gave that doggo a great life. I'm sure he'll be waiting for you at the Bridge.
@@Jung_hatte_recht Wtf? I’m talking about my decided dog and this is the thing you’re mentioning? Really? Be ashamed of yourself! For your information the mountain range is also located in Serbia and Albania, mountains don’t care about borders, especially ones that didn’t exist prior to 1944…
@@FireGriffon There is absolutely no reason for me to be ashamed of myself! But you should be ashamed of yourself for your choice of words and for spreading misinformations! This dog breed is therefore mainly native to North Macedonia and Kosovo but not to Serbia.
Romeo is amazing! His owners did such a good job, he's a sweetheart among humans. Sure he's fearsome when he has to his job but he really seems to know the difference.
Oh he’s so gorgeous! And so well behaved! The owners surely deserve much praise. He truly is a gentle giant, I wouldn’t want to get on his bad side though.
Most amazing breed ever! We were so lucky to find our girl, Sophie as a rescue dog. She was also lucky to come to live out in the country with only us to guard from the coyotes. The paw shake is Sophie's only trick--working dogs do not generally see the merit of silly tricks! Love this!

I don't know if someone else already commented this, but some time ago you featured a Shiloh Shepherd. The beautiful Šarplaninac is in the far-background genetics of the Shiloh Shepherd breed. They were introduced to add size, heavy bone, good hips and health, and stable but courageous temperament. That is when they developed the long-haired, or "plush" variation of the Shiloh Shepherd, which can be bred in a short-coat variation, as well. After the Šarplaninac genetics were infused into the breed, they then had to get back to the upright ears, as the infusion of the Šarplaninac resulted in many flop-eared pups! What a beautiful dog, and I'm glad to see a video about one of these!

They can look very similar, but Sarplas generally have lighter build and smaller head/muzzle. They are also healthier and their temperament is a lot better than Caucasians, in my opinion.

Šarplaninac ("the one of Šar mountain") is a very energetic dog, despite his size. He's incredibly well natured, a kind soul you might say and very protective. Unfortunately some owners in the Balkans and specifically in my country Bosnia keep these dogs in conditions that are not suited to their physical characteristics, i.e. they keep them in cities and urban areas but these dogs are bread for the mountain and countryside. They were specifically bread to run across large grassy areas of the Šar mountain and protect sheep from wolves, and also to withstand harsh weather conditions. As a result they don't enjoy hot climates at all and require a lot of care for their fur which grows very thick in order to protect them from the extreme cold of the mountain during winter. They can even spend the entire night outside in the snow as the temperatures plummet to well below zero degrees Celsius. Šarplaninci are awesome! ❤
Very large dog,if anyone planing to have Šarplaninac just to mention this,u need to have a large piece of land 3-6 acres, because this dog is not for house or apartment, nor small backyard,in Serbia and Bosnia they stay outside with 🐑 all year round, sleep and eat outside, very good guardian dog, quite aggressive to strangers, grove up in Bosnia as kid and had one of them
I absolutely LOVE the fact you actually used Š (instead of Sh) when you wrote the name and on top of that had a perfect pronunciation of Šarplaninac. :D I live in Balkans (more precisely Bosnia) and relatively close to the region the breed originates from, so it's not unusual to see these guys around here.
Sharpla-knee-nuts : that's how I would transliterate the name to English-speakers who want to properly pronounce the dog's name.EDIT : I come from the very region & mountain range this breed of dog comes from; therefore I,too, am a Šarplaninac!
I love this breed so much. Whenever I visit family in Bosnia, I become obsessed with every Šarplaninac I come by. They're always so kind and such a happy breed. They love to work and love their families.

They are the best dog. We have them here in Southern Albania now.
You bred the best dog! Thank you to my Balkan brothers and sisters.
He is amazing embassador for his breed and his owners have amazing job working with him
We have two tiny dogs and our neighborhood Šarplaninac is sooooo gentle to them and protects them from everything. Every Šar I've ever met is a real sweetheart.
Romeo certainly was a gentle giant, and a gentleman as well. It must have been a pleasure to hang out with him once he got outside. He really looked as though he was enjoying your back yard.
Romeo’s owners deserve a gold medal!! 🏅
❤
He's freaking adorable I can't take it
Romeo is such a gentle giant I just wanna hug him.
😢
RIP BUCKO, dying to save the kids 😢😢
Aw, sorry for your loss. What a good boy, protecting his family.
So sorry to hear that 😞
Srce drago i plemenito, branio do zadnjega daha ❤
We had Šarplaninac dog. He was the most gentle giant, but also very protective, especially of my brother and me, as children. Once he bit a man, who made a wrong move towards our mom. Greetings from Serbia. ❤
Did the man lose his arm in the process? 😂
Good doggy ❤
Good to see Serbs like our Croatian dogs 😊

That's the friendliest Grizzly Bear I've ever seen.
These dogs in the Serbian mountains protect sheep and other domestic animals from wolves. For protection, they have a metal collar with spikes around their necks, two or three dogs chase away a whole pack of wolves...
@@vukaleksic1654 Brilliant!
Romeo because of how he captures your heart. 🥺🥺
Adorable 🥰🥰🥰
I am always so happy to see a working dog that gets to do the work that they love and were bred for.
Same here. Do you have a pet?
Romeo has stolen my heart he's adorable such a big gentle giant ❤️🐶

I am from Macedonia, and this breed has a mythical status in my country. Here, you can hear a lot of interesting, sometimes impossible stories. I have seen a lot of Sharplaninec, but this one is especially beautiful.
dont say this breed, say this Albanian/Illyrian dog of Shar Mountains which only has a meaning in Albanian language

just because you have a stronger affinity for mountain goats doesn't mean every mountain is sqhipe
and not to mention "planinac" which any Serbian child recognises or ( planinec ) which any Macedonian child can also @generalsherman519
That's a handsome floofball right there. And so polite, too!
Read "football" and wondered for a bit what on earth reminded you of that in this dog 😅
The entire neighborhood knows when she is grooming big dogs. Earthquake! Nope, just a big dog shaking.
It's snowing!
Nope, just dog hair.
It's raining! Nope, just a big doggie shaking after a bath!
I don't think she has neighbours, she's grooming Huskies, the biggest drama queens of the canine family :P
😂😂😂
@InTimeTraveller I don't know, corgi's are high up there next to the German sheperds and huskies. They are always wildin', all dramatic and difficult. I can't blame her for not grooming corgi's too often (though she has 2 or 3 corgi videos to my knowledge). Not sure if there's more in her videos 3 or 4+ years back though.
I had a Šarplaninac for my entire life up till I was 17, her name was Sasha. In my opinion, with the proper socialization and training early on, it is by far the best dog breed out there. It's nice to see recognition for this breed.
He is the definition of huggable.
@@Maob08 Yes, our dog ended in a similarly tragic way. I'm sorry for a human kind sometimes....
@@Maob08 I know a pulin dog who found 2 different "owners" to take care of him. He is very polite dog, and he always signals when he is going to the other family at the opposite side of the village. Šarplaninec is my favourite dog! That dog comes from my mom's homeland! ❤️
I’m from Ex-Yugo!! so great to see our dogs represented!
Coming from Serbia, I always wanted to own the Šarplaninac dog as it's a local breed and one day I hopefully will. They're simply glorious.
Had one in the states, he oept stealing the neighborhood shoes and i live on an acre plot , still wasnt enough room for him. These are not house dogs, so think hard
@All-f5m Thank you for the info. Can't say I have an acre available for a dog, but it absolutely won't be a house dog. I love when they can roam as much as they can.
but sharri is in Kosova how can be serbian dog ? 😂😂😂😂 what a koke
@@TheTurjan Dog was actually called Illyrian Shepard officially but Yugoslavia didnt like that and had it claimed to be a slavic name since they wanted to steal everything about the Balkans. The amount of history eradicated by the slavic migration is crazy.
My family had this dog when I was younger! The gentlest dog I’ve ever met and I miss her dearly ♥️
They are the dogs from my father's homeland. They are the best! Fluffy, funny, endlessly friendly with their family and fierce protectors at the same time. They adore children too. Beautiful dogs.
His head is gigantic! What a well behaved boy.
What a surprise! The dog of my young years, on vacation in the south of Serbia in my grandmother's village. I love it !
I have four Great Pyrenees so I am used to big dogs. I used to dog sit a pair of Sarplaninacs and they were massive…and the sweetest babies.
He is absolutely gorgeous & such a good boy. His family have raised him very well
Wish I could see the livestock's reaction when he comes home looking and smelling all fancy.
Im from Bosnia a country from former Yugoslavia and im so happy I finally see one on your channel.
OVA GA IZMALTRETIRA OVIM LICKANJEM. NIJE JOJ SARPLANINAC PUDLICA! VIDI SE DA NIJE NASA SA BALKANA ILI NIJE OVDE ODRASLA
What a good boy. He was very tolerant of everything. ❤ I think his owners have put a lot of work into him. He even knows how to shake paws.
This video made me cry. My beautiful Šarplaninac passed away earlier this year at the age of 13. He was the best boy around, he would always get so happy when I would visit back home, he was such a gentle giant, he would tolerate everything even our tiny Maltese mix jumping on him all day long and the kittens playing with his tail.
Šar Mountain is located in North Macedonia and today's Republic of Kosovo! So they are not native to Serbia.
And by the way it is never embarrasing to correct misinformations. The Šar Mountain lies between North Macedonia and Kosovo and is mostly on North Macedonian territory. This dog breed is therefore mainly native to North Macedonia and Kosovo but not to Serbia.

Best dog I ever had. Extremely loyal and protective, but also very gentle towards people he considers his family.
Oh he’s so gorgeous! And so well behaved! The owners surely deserve much praise. He truly is a gentle giant, I wouldn’t want to get on his bad side though.
That is one thing I have wondered, with this channel. If a Dog that size moves the wrong way, has she ever been hurt?
Most amazing breed ever! We were so lucky to find our girl, Sophie as a rescue dog. She was also lucky to come to live out in the country with only us to guard from the coyotes. The paw shake is Sophie's only trick--working dogs do not generally see the merit of silly tricks! Love this!
Dog with "independent thinking" if not trained= Independence from owners later in life.Lovely dog and so gentle, those eyes! Thank you Vanessa.
Oh, so true! Brings happy memories of my beloved Rottie mix. Glad I’m not the only one .
I have 2 of them brother (Hector) & sister (Hera), great dogs! They are still puppies (9 months) but they are huge. Smart & happy dogs. Romeo is a great looking šarplaninac.
J'ai un Sarplaninac depuis deux mois, il a maintenant 5 mois et fait déjà plus de 30 kg ! Un chien adorable, bien dans sa tête !
i have a sarplaninac, and for my family he is just a tedy bear. usually he is a work dog, but for us he is a family dog and a family member. tho we kinda spoiled him and now he is useless as a guard dog. you could legit come to my house and he would look at u and just go on his back and wait for belly rubs even though you're a complete stranger. but we love him that way

My heart strings have been pulled!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVEEEEEE this page!
We have lots of those in Serbia. Very nice and gentle dogs, they love their owner.
I have a Shiloh and didn’t know this
German Leonberger have Šarplaninac blood too. After WW2 only small number of Leonberger's stay alive,so they used Šarplaninac to revive Leonberger 😊.
@@PakleniVuk I have a Leonberger/Bernese Mountain Dog mix, and I knew about the WW2 thing, but not about this breed helping in the revival. Never even heard of this breed before. Romeo reminds me a lot of my "LeonBerner".
Great dog! He does look a lot like Caucasian shepherd! His owners did a great job of socialising a herd dog to be so tolerant with strangers!
exactly...this is 100% a caucasian...well socialized,but still....
They can look very similar, but Sarplas generally have lighter build and smaller head/muzzle. They are also healthier and their temperament is a lot better than Caucasians, in my opinion.
mnogo mi je drago što si imala priliku da upoznaš šarplaninca 💕💕💕
I am a big dog person currently living in a too small ADU for having a dog at all, so it's not only educational but heartwarming to see the way you handle your client's big babies. Thanks!

What a great dog!! So regal. I'd never heard of this breed. Your channel is not only entertaining, but very informative. My cat Scout always watches your channel with me. She's one of your biggest fans.
sarplaninec ia from macedonia
Well except "c". It's not "k" it's like ts or tz
Sharpla-knee-nuts : that's how I would transliterate the name to English-speakers who want to properly pronounce the dog's name.EDIT : I come from the very region & mountain range this breed of dog comes from; therefore I,too, am a Šarplaninac!
Serbs like to own even dogs, like yugoslavia wasnt enough
He's so well behaved and calm wow!
