- Relays are some of the most fun events to watch or contest in the sport of swimming, and in my opinion the medley relays are the greatest test of a team’s versatility. Rather than seeing who has the best set of sprint or mid distance freestylers the medley relays showcase the team that has the best sprinters of all four strokes. And while relays are already thrilling to watch on the world and olympic stages, they are even more important in the NCAA format. In NCAA meets, relays are worth twice as many points as individual events, so a relay win or even disqualification can shake up team standings. In such a pressure filled setting the team that walks away with the gold is going to be made of pretty tough stuff, a team that breaks the record for fastest all time is inking their names into swimming history, and a team that takes those records into completely uncharted territory…well that's the University of Virginia Women
