We did the Everest Base Camp trek in Nepal in April 2023 in partnership with Kathmandu-based trekking agency Himalayan Masters. We trekked with guide, Govinda Rai, and porter, Prakas Tamang. It was part of a longer trek through the Khumbu region on the Everest Three Passes trail.
The Classic EBC trekking route and the Alternative/Everest Three Passes trekking route diverge at Dingboche. The classic EBC trail goes direct to Lobuche in 1 day, but it's also possible to get to Lobuche via a more challenging high pass called Kongma La over 2 - 3 days. This is the route we chose, and it was spectacular!
This film starts in Dingboche, on Day 6 of our trek, and we continued up the valley to Chukhung. We spent two nights at Chukhung, doing an acclimatisation hike up to Chukhung Ri at 5380 m on the second day. This helped our bodies to acclimatise to the high altitude, and put is in good stead for the pass crossing the following day.
We left Chukhung around 630 am, prepared for a long day climbing 5 hours up to Kongma La at 5514 m, then another 3 hours down to the Khumbu Glacier and Lobuche on the opposite side. We took food and enough water to last the whole day, as there is nowhere to eat or fill water on the way.
At Lobuche we rejoined the Classic EBC route, continuing to Gorak Shep the following day, the highest settlement on the route at 5160 m. The facilities are very basic here. Most people visit EBC after lunch, then do a sunrise hike up Kala Patthar the following morning. We decided to switch these around to avoid the crowds, and also in the hope of some sunset illumination of Everest and the surrounding mountains.

Part Two of our Everest Trekking extended cuts series! The film starts in Dingboche, the point where the 'Classic' and 'Alternative/Three Passes' trekking routes to EBC diverge. Taking the alternative route is definitely more challenging and adds an extra couple of days, but the views from Chukhung Ri and Kongma La are incredible, and the extra effort is absolutely worth it!! Check out our detailed itinerary for following this route in our free EBC guide on our blog - www.goingthewholehogg.com/everest-base-camp-trek-guide/ - and you'll find detailed trail notes and a route map here - www.goingthewholehogg.com/everest-three-passes-trekking-route-guide/. We trekked with Himalayan Masters and highly recommend them. You can get a 5% discount off your trek with HM by mentioning us with the code HOGG5 (bit.ly/EBCTrekHimalayanMasters)! Hope you enjoy the film and thank you for watching and supporting our channel 😃🥾🏔 Kim & Del

Thanks very much! Yes, you’re not wrong, we do try and to make them as best as we can and spend a lot of time and effort doing so. Really appreciate you recognising that, thanks again! 😃

I wonder if it's possible for Del just to sit the drone down and film those long walking away shots then just fly it too you? I've seen a lot of TH-camrs doing this back and forth dance and always thought I'd just use a drone for that 🤔 ... Maybe it's not possible for some reason ? Anyway great film as usual 👍🏻 Cheers

It would save a lot of energy for sure! But yeah, there's a few reasons why using the drone for such shots doesn't necessarily work. For this trek in Nepal we didn't have the drone with us as you require an expensive permit so decided against it. Drone batteries are pretty heavy, large, expensive, and only last about 20 minutes. They can't be charged using a power bank in the same way that camera batteries can, so we wouldn't be able to film a multi-day trek using only the 4 drone batteries we have. You're also a lot more limited with the kind of footage you can shoot with a drone compared to our Sony camera. The drone is great for showing the wider area and perspective, but not for detailed shots, lower angles, or variations in depth of field. It takes time setting it up and packing it away too, plus various other practical reasons, but you get the idea anyway! We do use it for the kind of shot you mention, but it wouldn't be practical all of the time unfortunately. Anyway, cheers for watching! Kim
