    Driving across the US sounds like fun but remember that is a 1953 car. the top speed on the freeway back in 1953 was about 55 MPH so a days driving (10hrs) was 550miles not 650-700 miles like in todays modern cars. That cars diff/tranny won't take 10-12 hrs worth of 70mph it will blow up or the engine will. Have a good LO O O O NG drive across the US.

      My father buried the speedometer on his '53 Chieftain en route from Carlsbad Caverns to Santa Fe, NM. He said he just floored it and that straight-8 w/Hydramatic responded. He said he didn't keep it at 100 for very long. Still, no harm done to the engine.

    Try some carborator cleaner in the fuel it had been sitting the jets in the carb might be gummed up. And also on the cold start you might have a manual choke should be a knob on the dash for that. And remember there is no computer to make any adjustments as it runs

    Also, the carburetor probably needs a rebuild. Floats and/or needle are stuck. Old gas sitting in that tank for who knows how long.

    You were using 2nd as 1st and 3rd for 2nd. 1st is back towards you and down. From 1st, up, over (towards dash- it should automatically move that way in Neutral) and up for 2nd, then straight down from 2nd to 3rd. It takes some getting used to but you'll get it. I think it was just bucking from being in too high of a gear, TK.

    1st gear is just under Reverse- towards you and down. It is a similar pattern to a 3-speed on the floor if it was moved up to the dash and then around to the steering column.
    It's pretty amazing that this car got going as good as it did in 2nd gear though.

    • @brian5o
      @brian5o 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@raybonecrusher4516 TK, Double-clutching could work for sure. In 1993 I bought a decommissioned 1988 X-FHP Mustang with a 5-speed and the 2nd gear synchro was gone and double-clutching kept it from grinding on the upshift (1st ->2nd: I had a friend that had one before me and another after me, all of them had bad 2nd gear synchros so you know how the troopers were driving them, lol. I learned it from him), though I have never tried it on a downshift. To double-clutch- push in the clutch pedal, move the shifter to neutral, release the clutch, push the clutch pedal back in then go into your next gear. Hopefully that'll help reduce the grinding for you.

He kept it until we left South Bend, then he sold it to a coworker. I remember that car well. It always started no matter how cold it got. It turned over much more slowly than this one, though. My father had to jury-rig a starter button after the battery contacts on the ignition switch burned out He bought a spring-loaded button and hooked the battery cables to it. That's how I remember him starting it; I was probably three when the contacts burned out.

    Couple of points to consider. Shift pattern is same as Chevy for that era. Get an old owner's manual if you aren't sure. I remember one of the cars where I had to pull it into 3rd then into low before starting off. Just an old worn gear box, probably last several more years. Back in the 50s we had some 65 speed limits around the country. The straight 8 Pontiacs would cruise at 65 all day without over heating. That "bucking" under moderate load seems more like a misfire than anything. Could be the carb is going lean, or could be ignition. Coasting along on a level road seems better but when you start uphill and add throttle it seems to buck on you. If you have a local shop or station with an analyzer that can check out your ignition it wouldn't hurt. One weak connection on those plug wires could also be the problem. Today we are spoiled by the ODBII computer codes. On those cars you need an old time analyzer.

  • @wagonmaster1974
    @wagonmaster1974 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The taking off/stalling issue is not the car. Learn how to drive a three speed on the column. Taking off in second is not going to work. In neutral, pull the shift lever toward you, then pull it down. That is first. Then, when moving about 14 - 20 MPH, move the lever back to neutral, push it forward and up - that's second. Hold in second until about 30 - 40 MPH. Then, pull the lever straight down two clicks. You are now in third gear. Do not engage third gear below 30 MPH or so. Stay in second [forward in neutral and up]. You are lugging the engine. That's why it is "bucking." It is a 1953 car. It is not fuel injected. It will require finesse that a modern car does not. Do not hurt it trying to manhandle it like a newer car. Let a mechanic look at the tuning issues. Don't start replacing stuff at random. Be nice to it. It will be nice to you.
    I've never heard anyone bitch as much abut normal old car stuff. I'd hate to listen to you around a rough car. This one is pretty nice, from the video.
    It is not the car's fault or a fault with the car. Learn a bit about the function of a carbureted, point sparked, inline 8 cylinder engine, followed by likely worn synchronizers in a cast iron three speed stick shift. By the way, that car originally did not have an electric fuel pump. It had an engine driven mechanical pump. Someone has added the electric pump.

    G'day, TK, with old cars, it is best to pump the gas a few times to prime the carbie bowl before turning the key and then leave the gas pedal alone until she warms up. Without a choke, she is running too lean on startup. Priming the bowl will help enrich the air-fuel mixture. Check to see if a manual choke cable can be fitted to the carbie. You are truly a legend to attempt to drive this car any distance. Best of luck and good fortune. Drama means good views.

    To me it seems that this bucking happens every time you put a load on it (like going up the hill). That sounds like a it might be spark related and not a gas issue. You might test the coil and see how those plugs and wires are. The plugs and wires are more exposed then in a newer car so who knows if Oklahoma's famous dust bowl like storms have not gotten to the things
    As for 3 on the tree, back in the 1930's this was seen as luxury since the floor shifter looked like it was from a truck and these 3 on the tree shifters were seen as modern. In 1987 when the last vehicle(for the USA Market) made with it this (1987 Chevy C10 pickup truck), it was seen as a dated relic. Last USA Market car was the 1979 RWD GM X-Body twins (like the Nova). Last Ford with the 3 on the tree was 1986 F150 and Last Mopar was the 1985 Dodge D truck.

    Saw some chrome parts on eBay that weren't overly wildly priced. Maybe join a Pontiac club. The members often have parts that are left over from a restoration or just put aside when they saw them and they will help a fellow owner out. You can point them to the video to prove you aren't just reselling parts.
    Short trip would be fun. The points will arc if they are touching or close to touching when the key is left on. Maybe a points replacement with electronic ignition? Great video again. Thank you.

      Yeah I saw the same thing there are some vintage and reproduction pieces on eBay looks like they would have to be bought piece by piece but might be able to find all the pieces he would need or maybe he can find one on Copart or IAA for parts maybe

    1st gear is towards you and DOWN, you're starting in 2nd.....lol......#0000 steel wool will remove that over spray on the glass, even a clay bar should do it. Speaking of glass, the flat glass is easy to have made and replaced. Front and rear, not so much....The missing trim, most of it is stainless and similar on Chevy and Olds of the period, not impossible to find. The bumpers/chrome...you can get the color out of the pits but the pits will remain unfortunately.... due to the morons leaving the key on the points may be fried...replace with new ones, *OR get a Pertronix ignition system and so away with any future ignition issue. I have hints for the missing trim as well. The carb can be adjusted AND / or rebuilt easily.

      Indeed it will, no synchros...so, put it in 2nd first to pause the input shaft, then down into 1st gear, no grinding....do it when stopped of course

      If you take it to Wichita, maybe Hoovie, JR or The Wizard can help you get everything sorted.
