The Founders put in the Electoral College for a reason... to protect the interests of those who don't live in the "high-class" metropolitan areas from the whims of those who do live there. Before all the hubbub of the 2000 Election, I too was in favor of the popular vote. After hearing Walter Williams explain it, and reading up on the Electoral College myself, I saw the light. You can't just have the big metro areas determining policy for the rest of us; every other part of the country has their own interests that matter to their citizens, and they need to be respected as well.
America is not the same place it was back in the 1800s for voting or gun use which laws are both out dated in a modern world. The fact that a hand full of people in a smaller state gets the same two votes in the Senate as a bigger one is insane. Yes it's 50 states but still one country.The position of commander and chief should always have the backing of the majority there are more than enough checks and balances in the system to keep the president in check as clearly demonstrated by the GOP the past 8 years.
