    I’d argue that Bill’s reaction to entering the TARDIS is the most realistic. Most of us would try to rationalise what we are seeing. Obviously entering another dimension is not on the list of possibilities in our minds. A knock-through seems the most sensible suggestion. Then she needs the toilet - like a real human might. And it does look a bit like a kitchen.

    I like the juxtaposition of Susan and River’s pictures being on his desk; the first and last members of his family that we saw him lose.

    Considering that Moffat era openers are usually these big epic continuity-heavy showstoppers, it's rather strange and incredibly refreshing for him to go in the opposite direction this time and turn out a stripped back straightforward little character piece. I certainly appreciate it, given how intense, introspective and broody series 8 and 9 were, the back-to-basics approach that Moffat takes with "The Pilot" is honestly a nice change of pace, and makes for the perfect way to introduce the new companion.
    I'll get this out of the way immediately - I love Bill Potts. She's the best companion we've had since Donna, and probably one of my all-time favourite Doctor Who companions. I love her curiosity and the fact that she approaches all these weird alien scenarios with a big smile and loads of enthusiastic excitement. I also love her sense of humour, the way she kind of just rolls with the weird stuff that gets thrown her way, as well as her humorous observations surrounding the Doctor, the TARDIS, and the various little things that no one seems to pick up on ("it's disguised itself as a box with 'pull to enter' written on the front?") The teacher-student dynamic that she forms with the Doctor is fantastic, right from the word go they're giving us loads of fun witty setpieces and exchanges, and Pearl Mackie's chemistry with Capaldi only makes this partnership even better. And while we're here, I really like the way that Bill's sexuality is handled here, it's not there to be a punchline to a joke like Moffat often did in the past (see Canton, or Vastra and Jenny), it's explicitly shown, and it doesn't dominate her character to the point of it being her only personality trait.
    Outside of the establishment of the Doctor and Bill's relationship, "The Pilot" is a pretty standard decent little adventure. There's some nice character moments, like the Doctor giving Bill all those photographs of her mum that she never had before. The whole subplot with the puddle is a nice creepy idea, another instance of Moffat taking an ordinary object and making it into something scary. The direction looks really crisp and fresh and aesthetically pleasing, even by this era's usual high standards. And while the episode is mostly a stripped back story intended to be a jumping on point for new viewers, I love all the little continuity nods we do get, like the photos on the Doctor's desk, all the classic screwdrivers, the reprisal of Clara's theme, and the Movellans of all things. In general though, the episode's main function is to introduce our new companion, and act as a stepping stone to send her off on more new adventures. "The Pilot" succeeds fantastically at both objectives, and now we're ready to jump right into this brilliant and somewhat underrated series

    I agree, season 10 is probably my favorite out of the Capaldi run. It felt like the Doctor had a beginning, middle and ending character arc, with 12 that culminated in his third season. Series 8 he was the almost heartless, grumpy old "am I a good man" Doc where in series 9 he was the complete opposite, almost a mid life crisis, finding himself Doc (both very entertaining to watch). But I felt series 10 is where it all came together, where he was probably the most kind and compassionate I've ever seen the character, again played to perfection by Peter Capaldi. And as for Bill, she's probably my favorite companion in all of new who behind 13's companions because I love those guy's

      I feel like, if it was any other actor playing the role - normies would eat it up. There is like a strange movement of people just not caring for Matt Lucas as person. I guess a silly, but sometimes mean bald man with a respectable weight, just doesn't hit as well as for example hot looking space pirate. I feel like Nardole on itself had very Donna like run - where he was hella irrelevant in the Husbands episode, but his character actually got a lot of depth throughout the season. And had way better chemistry with Doctor and Bill, than for example Mickey or Rory.

    Poor old Nardole never gets a mention he's a companion too it's not just Bill. Heaven Sent ,The Husbands of River Song and Series 10 is the best of the Capaldi era. Also the photographs of Susan Foreman and River Song and the different variations of the Sonic Screwdrivers as well as seeing the return of The Movellans was a nice little call back.

    Capaldi reminded me of Doctor's from my youth ('70's and '80's). He was not there as a 'sex symbol (and I loved both Tennant and Smith's tenures). He was all about the smarts and (eventually) the empathy. I'm glad we have arrived at Bill too.

    Lovely react. You're right, every time we get a new Doctor or companion I feel like there's a bit of a fresh start and Bill is certainly a breath of fresh air. Moffat is certainly not beyond criticism but he really shows his prowess here, not just in the banter between the lead trio but the clever references to previous companions: the mindwipe scene takes us back to Donna but then pivots to Clara, then when Bill runs into the Tardis at the end it felt just like the sheer joy when Rose runs through those doors at the end of S1E1! (I also love the pictures of Susan and River on his desk and the whole classic series feel of him being on Earth gave me Pertwee UNIT era and Shada vibes.)

    From what i gather the people who dont like series 10 think that bill potts' character is an example of the modern tendency in diverse writing of to make a character who's personality revolves around their sexuality or race/ethnicity and that outside of these things that make them diverse they have no personality. I dont agree with this take on bill at all. I do think that she reiterates her orientation more than necessary throughout the series but shes a very well rounded character. Peter absolutely shines as the doctor as always. Mostly series 10 catches flack for being political and while i dont agree that any series of doctor who is at all overly political i can understand more why the whittaker era gets called for that more than this particular series.

      @bookswithike3256 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      People who love to complain about Doctor Who being "political" mean left wing politics. So it's funny that the era they choose to complain about being political is far less left wing than any other series of modern Doctor Who, but because of superficial things like the Doctor being a woman and having non-white companions, they perceive it as more "woke."

      @@dutchman8887 I make a distinction between good writing and good stories, because they don't always go hand in hand - a good story can sometimes have a workmanlike script and vice-versa. Happily, I found the writing and stories in the Moffat era much better than some people do. In fact, I slightly prefer it to the RTD1 era, much as I loved that.

    That memory wipe scene should have been a reference to Donna as it’s the most thematically similar scenario. But they decided to tie it to Clara for some reason.

    • @NicoleM_radiantbaby
      @NicoleM_radiantbaby 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Probably because the memory loss of Clara is more recent in the audience's memory? But yeah, I always think of Donna more in that moment than the Clara stuff.

      Yeah, it’s pretty weird that they made a tie to the most recent companion exit rather than one that would’ve happened about a decade prior to this episode...

      @@cyberdalek615 I assume this is sarcasm but it would have made much more sense for it to be Donna. As he was about to wipe her mind. ‘Imagine if somebody did this to you’.
      It would give him a chance to make that hard decision again but this time say no instead. He wiped donnas mind but he can let Bill keep hers as he knows the pain and trauma it caused both him and Donna last time.

    • @cyberdalek615
      @cyberdalek615 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@obiwankenobi687 I guess, but it also works in Clara’s case since he was actually the victim of a mind-wipe for that episode rather than the one causing it. The Donna mind wipe is certainly referenced here, though so is the Clara one.
      Bill’s question about “how’d you feel if this happened to you?” works after Clara since the Doctor has already been in the position was about to be in. Not only that, but he’s also caused a mind-wipe via Donna, so he’s had both experiences. He’ll know how it feels to not only be wiped of your memory but also to wipe someone else’s.

    I've kinda dipped in and out of these reactions because the Clara era is anti-matter to my sensibilities but I am so on board for the S10 reactions. Such a great season with many high-concept episodes without too much pretense.

    My main problem with this episode is that it doesn't really give us enough time to get to know Heather and care about her budding relationship with Bill. She turns into Creepy Alex Mack too fast. So the emotional beats don't really hit the mark IMO. Other than that, good episode.
    (There's also a bit of Moffat doing his usual "hur hur lesbians" shtick, but he gets that out of his system at the start of the episode and gets on with the story.)

      @@RandomThumbVids The way it works is:
      a) you upload a video with all the scenes you want to include
      b) TH-cam's bots say "Stop! You have seven copyright claims on your video! This twenty-second bit at 2:35. And the ten-second clip at 4:56. And the whole five minutes at the end. You won't be able to monetise it. Proceed yes/no?"
      c) you say "drat" and edit the video in TH-cam Studio to remove the segments that are copyright claimed, or mute the audio, or blur the image or something. (Or you delete that version of the video and re-upload a replacement video you edited yourself.)
      You can also send a request to the copyright holder to release the claim, but that sometimes backfires if they decide they disapprove of your video--a copyright strike is much worse than a claim.

      @RandomThumbVids 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SchrodingersTransCat Oh, I didn't realise it was being done that way, so many other reaction channels get to include major scenes/have it trimmed the way they want it seems. Looked like something different was going here.

    • @SchrodingersTransCat
      @SchrodingersTransCat 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RandomThumbVids Well, I can't be sure how Paula and Katrina do it. They might leave key scenes out simply because neither of them 'reacted' to that moment--they were just watching intently and saying nothing. (I understand that this is important for fair use too--you have to actually be commenting on something for it to count.)
      Some of it just comes down to the bot gods being random. They'll hit one person with a dozen claims and ignore another TH-camr with exactly the same scenes. Probably because they didn't offer the correct ritual sacrifices before uploading. 😉
