The whole thing was about 3 - 4 interviews over a span of almost 2 months. It was an MNC so almost everyone spoke English there and all the interviews were in English. But there was a translator in the room for one of the interviews. Thank god because my Japanese level is N5 at best.

17 years in Japan so far, and I can safely say that any role in IT which requires native level Japanese will almost always hire a Japanese National, not a foreign person, even if that person is fully fluent in Japanese. I see that most of these roles can typically be identified early - they require a Japanese style resume (not just a resume written in Japanese). 4 to 8 million yen is for an entry level position. It is only based on your previous salary if you tell them what that was truthfully :) I typically do not state my current salary, I indicate my expectations only. For people with less experience, you may not have this level of leverage. Go into the discussion after researching what several other companies are offering for similar level jobs to get a sense of the value. Having at least 1 technical certificate is a big bonus, as it shows commitment to the technology, and demonstrates you have the ability to pass the tests. Engineers with no certs usually means they have huge gaps in their understanding from even basic core understanding of first level concepts, which builds an incomplete knowledge base foundation, leading to bigger problems later on.

The degree is almost always regarding the visa. Most companies just worry about the sponsorship visa they need to give the foreigner, if you have a degree it makes getting that visa very easy. If you already have a visa anyway the degree won`t matter as much to them unless its specific to the job role your applying for.

I've been a web developer for 5 years here in Japan, but I'm in the process of changing jobs. It's been a very frustrating process thus far. I would've thought already being here and having the visa would be an advantage, but not so much.
There are definitely some good points for the interview process. These sound like things that'd appear in most companies, although when I did the interview for my current job, none of that stuff was in there. Heh.

Really happy I ended up finding this channel because these sort of videos you're doing (found you through the Visa ones) are sooo detailed and really do feel like some of the most informative on the platform.
I'm looking for one day working in the games industry over there too, even just as a QA Tester which is what I'm currently doing here in the UK now.
For the lulz, I looked around at some QA listings and kinda realised working over there actually might be possible for me, I just want to boost my Japanese ability (it's around N3-ish, but I'm not comfortable with being able to communicate effectively).
One thing I'd like to ask, because from my experience over here in the UK it can be a good thing to do, is (and I understand its a sliiightly different industry), but I honestly am kinda interested in just mailing out to some of these places with QA listings not to specifically apply, but just to ask a couple questions about the job, and to kinda put forward my interest, so that when I return in a couple years or so maybe, the hiring manager might be all "hey this guy was keen to join us 2 years ago!" and might score me some brownie points. Is that much of a thing over there? Because in my experience, that sort of thing over here would be a decent thing to do IMO as hiring managers appreciate and remember how much energy you give a company/a position, and generally showing interest/having even a small conversation is good to build connections with people, even if its as small as "that guy sent us an email some years ago" sorta thing.

    • @JapaneseJourney

      Thanks for commenting Nintendan!
I'm not really sure, since I'm not an HR person. I guess it depends on how much saying HR actually has in the hiring decision, which may vary by company.
What I would like to recommend you though is start applying earlier rather than later, since your Japanese will never be perfect, and you will certainly have an easier time practicing it here.

From what I understand, it doesn't seem like the job culture of Japan is very conducive to innovative software practices. The industry evolves so rapidly that things like questioning authority and job-hopping might be useful. If an employer pays for example 100,000 yen towards rent or pays for private school, does that amount of money not count towards salary? The percent of tax at higher income levels is a lot, but is that tax reduced if instead you take a smaller salary and instead let them pay for your car, house, school, etc? I can't figure out any other reason they would separate the pay into that kind of category. Thank you so much.

I've been to Japan several times and think I would enjoy living and working there. However, I don't have a 4 year degree (just a 2 year, associates) as I was recruited by a company and saw little reason to go back to school for two more years. This has been an absolute non-issue in the US and I've enjoyed nearly 13 years in the field. How likely would I be to land a job in Japan with this situation? Will they _really_ waive the 4 year degree requirement? How common is it?

    • @jopanDE

      Thanks for the comment!
For the visa, the requirement is a (usually 4 year) university degree or sufficient professional experience in the field. This is usually said to be 10 years, so from that perspective, you should be fine. As for companies requiring a uni degree, it depends. Maybe getting in touch with an agent would be the best step forward, they should be able to easily give you an idea of the current situation.

I currently try to get a lawyer to tell me if I could get a visa while staying with my German company. Working remote for them and living/paying taxes in Japan.
I switched my area in IT and I'm old already. So I think the chances of me getting a job in that area in Japan are pretty low - especially since I'm now at a junior lvl in that area.

These requirements are ridiculous here.... and very outdated/obsolete. Anywhere else having the right certifications will always weight more than any university degree. I know MANY people, especially in the cyber field who don't have a college degree at all. Japan is still living in the 90s....

    • @JapaneseJourney

The college degree is not necessarily required for the position you are applying to, but it's a prerequisite for getting a work visa.

@@JapaneseJourney Point taken! I forget people are crazy enough to come to Japan for work, hence the need for a work visa. I’m here because I am married to a Japanese guy but hopefully we will be leaving soon. I’m looking for a career change and I don’t think it will happen while being here... I’ve seen job listings for IT entry level positions here in Tokyo which do require a BA, plus Japanese N1, at least 3-5 years of experience on the field (which contradicts the concept of ENTRY level) and pay 3 million yen per year or less.

Was wondering what your insights are for those who can get specified visas (Child of Japanese National or Long-Term Residents Visa). Since they have no restrictions for work while staying in Japan, would a person on these types of visas have similar or worse chances of obtaining employment without a degree but with sufficient work experience in the field he or she is applying for? Also, since this type of visa is obtained by the applicant on his or her own without the need of a company to sponsor, I was wondering if this type of applicant is more desirable in terms of ease of getting them ready in Japan.
    Thank you!

    • @JapaneseJourney
      @JapaneseJourney  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks fro commenting, MomotarouX.
I think some companies require a degree, so from that perspective, it might be slightly worse. When comparing somebody with no experience but a degree and somebody with experience but no degree, of course the experienced person is in a better position.
Generally I would say, if a company cares enough to hire non-Japanese, your visa type will not be part of the decision. Exceptions may be if a position needs to be filled really quickly.

I feel like it would make some people consider. Not because it is bad to not want to work overtime, but because the way you put it seems quite stiff, even fearful.
If I were you, I would ask the people interviewing you how much overtime they do on average and what was the maximum they did in a month so far.
