This was super helpful. I've been making vests for months and wanted to move on to harnesses. I loved your buckle demo because i've been attaching mine a totally different way, but yours looks way easier. thanks!! Edit after I've followed this tutorial and used the measurement guide to make a harness: 1. I used 1" webbing instead of 1.5" as I already had 1" webbing lying around. So I used a 4" wide strip of fleece instead of 5", and 1.5" triglides and triangle loop (versus a 2" triangle loop). The next time I make a harness, I'm going to use a 1" triglide for the girth strap, since that triglide is only attached to the webbing, and not the fleece. The 1.5" triglide worked well for the shoulder straps and the chest strap (these are different than the girth because the triglide will need to accommodate two layers of fleece with webbing, instead of just webbing), but I could have been fine with the recommended 2" triglide also. I would use a 2" triangle loop next time, instead of the 1.5", as it looked kind of bunched up. 2. I'm not sure if I measured the chest strap wrong, but it was WAY too long for my dog. I have to tie it in a knot to make the harness wearable. Next time, I will likely take off 2" or more of length from the chest strap. 3. For the girth strap, I left ~5 inches in between the triglide and the forked end of the buckle. I attached the fleece just below the triglide on the opposite side of the forked buckle (exactly as was shown in this video) and the fleece ended ~3" prior to the webbing where I then attached the flat buckle (again, exactly as shown). I don't think the spacing of the forked buckle and triglide was explained in this video or in the measurement sheets, but I estimated the measurements based on the size of your fingers (at 12:16) in relation to the webbing and my own fingers, assuming we have similarly sized hands and that two fingers equals approximately 1". 4. Spray n Bond is your best friend for this project but be sure to not spray directly on the fleece as it could get caught under the presser foot. I sprayed it on the underside of the webbing and it worked perfectly. 5. I attached the shoulder straps to the back strap 2.75" (instead of 2.5") from the middle on each side to avoid that little fold where the shoulder straps stick out a bit at the point of attachment to the back strap. I might do 3" from the center next time as the shoulder straps still stuck out a little. My dog is a medium sized golden with a 26" girth so if you have a smaller dog, you probably won't need to add any extra room. 6. This makes a beautiful harness :)
thank you so much for this! the video is definitely just a summary so I wasn't able to include all those extra things - thanks for writing them out! it takes a lot of trial and error to get the perfect harness :)
@@Bigcitybebes thank you for posting the tutorial! Yours is the only one I've seen that doesn't overwhelm or confuse me. I can't wait to get more webbing to make a second :)
Thank you so very much for this wonderful tutorial. It was exactly what I was looking for for my 3 dogs. I was getting tired of the store bought ines falling apart or not fitting properly under their arms. Your video was so easy to follow and your voice was also pleasant to listen to and to follow. Looking forward to checking out any other videos you my have.
Excellent video I love how it’s straight and to the point and not an hour and half long. I make harnesses every day for my shop but I love seeing new ideas :)
Thanks for your comment! I am not a gear maker but figured people could maybe get some ideas - Good luck with your shop, I love seeing all the amazing work that gear makers do!
This is awesome! I am making a harness for a IG friend that has a Boston and he’s partially paralyzed but regaining his feeling back in his legs. They are needing one that is low on the chest area so that it doesn’t bother the incision that he has after his surgery so I’m pretty excited to make this for them! Thanks for the info!
awesome! you may need to play around a little bit with the sizing as i am not sure the sizing chart includes small sizes. however, it is definitely possible to do and you can make it super soft and comfy!
I would use stronger thread for sure. Upholstery thread is what I use. And I also use heavy duty rings and latches. I am so thankful for your video thou. It is very well put together and no doubts left behind. You did amazing job.
Thank you. I was wondering how to make my gear. My income is limited and I can't really afford to keep buying a bunch of custom gear but I am able to learn and I have time. Especially with some new diagnosis making it a bit harder to find work. I was hoping to get good enough to open a gear shop for some extra income
Thank you for this!!! I don’t have $70 to go spend on a vest and I love sewing so it works out😂. I don’t want to make them to sell, just yet lol. But so many people won’t share how to make them because they think others will “steal” their business. But hopefully I can make my boy one Asoon
This is a fantastic video. Thank you! I want to try and modify it a bit to eliminate the metal on the back and have a buckle attachment on each side. I love how you showed various angles that was super helpful.
Love this video u make it look so simple. im getting a sdit so I have a harness for the training but when she is a sd I want a special harness like yours so exited to make it, it looks very professional.
Thank you so much for this video! Can you PLEASE PLEASE make another video on how to make a service dog vest and cape? I REALLY want to learn to make gear for my SD and this is the only video I found online that has been helpful.
I watched the whole thing, and I'm going to make one for my service dog. But will add a front D ring as he pulls. Very well done and explained! And adorable pups!
I don't remember off the top of my head but I have links to all the materials in the website link in the description. After making more harnesses recently I think that the "steel corset boning" is more sturdy than the plastic tubing. The only issue with the corset boning is that you need a steel cutter to cut it so the plastic will be easier if you don't have a steel cutter.
yes it would! the process of attaching the buckles and triglide would be the same as the "backstrap" section but to fit the size of the neck instead of the largest girth.
Hi!! Your site doesn’t seem to work anymore 😭 would you mind sending me the sizing charts for cutting the different pieces, please? I bought everything we needed but need to know the sizes to cut!
Hi there, Do you need a heavy duty sewing machine for this project? I have a regular one, but not sure if it will be too think with the doubling of the webbing/ribbon?? thanks!!
throughout the video I say that you should reinforce it even more. this is also not only for service dog harnesses - any dog can wear a harness. this is an unlabeled harness.
@@Bigcitybebes I'm just thinking safety when the dog pulls. I did not say specifically service dogs. All dogs need pulling safety. That is what a harness is for.
@@punkydoggear8172 that is why every few minutes I say to reinforce the attachment points over and over - for example with the "Box X Stitch" at every attachment point. The "Box X stitches" are used in sewing because they are both parallel and perpendicular to the axis of the webbing. This distribution makes it so that in weight bearing, the loads are evenly distributed.
Look...I'm really not trying to upset you. Like I said the SHOULDERS need more stitching. There was no box stitching done there on the video, unless you've uploaded a new video. I liked your video otherwise...you did a great job. :) I have a double ortho approved gear shop and am trying to pass along wisdom of safety is all.
thank you sew*;) much. Are you using a heavy duty machine? if so do you think a standard singer from the 90s can do this? when you got to sewing the front piece to the tummy part I wasn't sure my machine could handrl that many layers
Hi! My favorite place to get Fleece is from JoAnn's Fabric because they have a wide selection. If you do not have one near you, Amazon will work. Check out the link to my website in the description to get the direct links to the supplies.
I added an extra d-ring on the loop where the other set where put so there's two on each loop it looks neater and for the cape and pull strap I use works fine
Im making one for my service dog and I was wondering can you use straws for a smaller counterbalance handle? also I have been looking to getting a harness and now I can make them!
I believe that straws will probably not be sturdy enough. You can cut the wiring that goes inside to make it shorter as an alternative for a smaller handle
You could use faux leather for a lighter feel - you can find those by searching "Faux Leather Sheets/Rolls" on Etsy. They have lots of great colors to choose from.
I would suggest when you loop the bottom part through that you get a d ring and put some extra webbing over it, secure it in place with a box stitch on either side at the triangular metal piece. And you should be good

What if I just want to add a single d ring to attach a leash? Would that go in the middle of the back strap between the two pull strap d rings?
Yes, it would
When measuring your dog do you need to add more inches so you can adjust it

This is exactly what I was looking for!! Thank you so much!!

what size plastic tubing did you use for the semi rigid handle?? Awesome video btw I plan on making one soon for my service dog in training.

Can you please tell me what size webbing you used? I couldn’t find it in the video, was it 2 inches or 1.5? Also I saw you used 2 different sizes
How would you do it for a guide handle. Is it the same as the counter balance but the d rings are on the shoulders
Would this process work for making a fleece dog collar with webbing ? Would u be willing to make a video on it ?
yes it would! the process of attaching the buckles and triglide would be the same as the "backstrap" section but to fit the size of the neck instead of the largest girth.

That's not enough stitching on the shoulder straps especially for counter balance mobility usage. :(
