Raiding an Ancient City! ▫ Minecraft Survival Guide S3 ▫ Tutorial Let's Play [Ep.61]

- The Minecraft Survival Guide Season 3 continues in Minecraft 1.20.2!
In this tutorial, we stealthily creep through the Ancient City we uncovered in the previous episode.
First, I recap all the ores I was able to extract from the moss mining chunk - enough to fill a shulker box with ore blocks!
Then I step into the Ancient City with a stash of Wool blocks in my inventory, and explain how we can tactically use wool to both avoid detection by the sculk sensors and shriekers while we explore, and to 'defuse' the shrieker traps in the rooms containing loot chests!
Along the way we discover a huge stash of Enchanted Golden Apples, Enchanted Books, Diamond equipment and even a unique Armor Trim! We also find the fragments needed to craft Music Disc '5', and the Echo Shards used to craft a Recovery Compass.
And, because it wouldn't be an Ancient City episode without it, we spawn the Warden, and cover basic strategies to avoid getting whomped by him.

38:30 "I don't need a hoe that disappears on me" -pixlriffs 2023
"Because we've got enough at this point"
I believe the lore about the collapsed camp site is that it was set up by a Pillager scouting party who found the Ancient city. This is supported by another structure you can find there, an abandoned Pillager outpost tower. These are the only two structures in the entire city that will contain dark oak wood. The implication being that they themselves were exploring the city, just like you are now, but ran afoul of the Warden.
I really like this !
Your wrong!!! Badlands Mineshafts contain Dark Oak planks, logs, and stairs.
@@cookingwithkimbap4432 I said "The only two structures IN THE ANCIENT CITY that contain dark oak wood." Not the only two underground structures. Learn some reading comprehension.
@@blackhawk15897get of your high horse
Yeah the wool is common with them. Makes sense. I wonder if you can find banners or crossbows near there?
Pixelriff out of context "got enough hoes and don't need one dissapearing on me" XD I love how effortless you make this look. I died twice while rying to get into a bastion the other day ;( You really are good at this, keep it up.
Went to the comments for this 😂😂
What I like about the redstone room, is that it feels like you're exploring a tutorial world back on the Xbox 360
The ancient cities add a lot of interesting lore for the minecraft world. And that frame in the center of the city is 110% a portal for the Warden's home world.
wouldn't be cool if that dimension was called the otherside?
At one point, one of the structures that is a smaller version of the centerpiece was referred to as “small_portal_statue” in the code. It was only for a few snapshots, but it’s as close as we have to confirmation of it being a portal.
I heard it's meant to be a screen, and when the long delayed Minecraft Movie finally comes out, you will be able to pay to watch it there in game.
@@chinkramthe dark side?
interestingly there are mods out there, that use this portal-like frame as an actual portal for some kind of dimension, i think this specific mod adds in fact a skulk mobs dimension
Man, you make these Ancient City raids look so easy, which they are not. An awesome episode! Thank you!
Fr fr. Got me thinking I’m going to be able to flawlessly raid one. 🤣😂
@@denirio Same here. 😂😂😂
I find them extremely easy... mostly because the warden is no match for my secret weapon "gamerule dowardenspawning false" 😛
@@gayowulf I build Ilmango's Warden switch instead.
38:30 Pixlriff is so real for saying this. Right on, brother, treasure someone who knows how to treasure you too.
Clean raid. My play style has been heavily influenced by you so I generally have a similar experience raiding cities. It pains me whenever I go raiding with my friends because they run in guns blazing and summon the warden very quickly
Thats me but by accident😂i try to be quiet and clean and then once 1 warden spawns i just go haywire 😂
@@deborahsheets2604 funny thing was he summoned a warden and I tried to distract it with arrows and inadvertently made it go towards him
I had to send a tips and tricks video to my cousin whom I play minecrafy with, cause that dude spawned the warden like 3 times, when I haven't even triggered a shrieker once.
I have a genuine fear of the ancient cities! 😂😂 accidentally fell and landed in one when i was exploring the caves. Saw the cyan and blue blocks and next thing you know the lights started flickering and behind me was WARDEN chasing me ( he killed me lol). It's so fascinating but scary when I'm in a cave and i see the ancient city, but I'm so terrified to go in there, so this video really helps with some preparation before exploring it and raiding
Watching this and season 2 ancient city episodes to help summon the courage to tackle this on my world soon. My wife hates the enclosed, bald sheep in my auto wool farm in our realm - I keep telling her THIS is why I need endless stacks of wool! Thanks for the upload, Pix!
im impressed considering i summoned the warden after 2.4 seconds in an end city and then didnt know it could blast me through the wall and got got
not end city. whatever those places are called
Ancient city. It's in the title 👍
Throw swift sneak on your leggings! It’s honestly the best enchantment, it even makes building up in the air faster because you don’t slow down when you have to crouch
Wow 8 enchanted golden apples in one city! I remember when desert temples were the places to go for those but not anymore.
Ancient cities have a lot of open air diamonds if you remove the sculk layer on the ceiling of the city.. Hunting ancient city is a good way to farm open air diamonds..
wool is such a pretty block...it looks so soft
"We got enough hoes at this point and i don't need one that disappears on me"
- Pixelriffs 😏🤣🤣🤣🤣
My favorite way to explore the AC's is from above. Basically make bridging over it making somewhat of gridded pathway. This allows me an overview of the sensor/shreakers, and chests, provides a direct and fast escape route, if the roof is high enough allows easy stacking out of range of the warden and if I go down to the city level it helps me orientate myself. Ideally it should be high enough to not set off shreakers and thus wool is not needed, though that is not always possible.
For those impossible shrieker/sensor setups where there seems to be no way to disable it w/o setting it off, TNT placed in wool next to it will destroy it without setting it off (place the wool first, then the TNT inside. It may also be possible to drop the TNT into it from above and either have it explode right before it touches or perhaps if it does it's not counted as a player, but may be another way to do that.
I've used the tnt dropping (or bombing as I like to call it) strategy to great effect, and I can confirm that at least when activated with a button it does not count as a player action. I have a hunch that lighting it with flint and steel or a flame bow would trip shriekers, but I haven't tested that.
The loot is worth it but Pix makes it look easier than it is. He should really demo the part where you miss a jump trigger a warden and panic run in the dark. 😅
I love the lore the ancient city adds. What exact lore that is remains a mystery to me, but I love exploring the options
I can't wait to find an ancient city and explore it! I already found a big chunk of sculk so hopefully I find it soon. Great video. 😊
I think I saw more enchanted
golden apples than the past 2 seasons combined in just this episode 🤯
I want a Warden pet... A miniature one that just follows me around doing the creepy x2 speed charge.
Pix brings the humor, the knowledge, AND the skills
Almost at 1 million subs Pixl!! Can't wait!
I swear when i raided a city on the Wild Update release there were at least 2 shriekers per structure and some would take good 10 minutes to defuse not to mention back then dropping wool on the ground would make noise. Specifically remember one larger structure had a whopping 5 shriekers to deal with! Have they nerfed their spawns or is this just fortunate generation lol?
As of today 4 or 5 per chest spots. You’re not alone
I recently found my first Ancient City after a really long hiatus from Minecraft, and man that Warden is intimidating.
Ancient Cities have some interesting value in that they are the only sources for comparator's and soul sand that don't require you to go to the nether. Obviously, for most, just hitting the nether for the rather abundant quartz and soul sand is easier and safer - but there are particular worlds/challenges/etc where such things can be worthwhile.
If you are going villager free, they are supposed to have more mending books - thought that might still be a future change.
Diamond hoes and pants are common there - good if you are doing a "no mining diamonds" playthrough (which will get much more challenging later on when villagers won't trade you diamond goods for only emeralds, meaning you will have to spend looted diamonds for them) - though the upcoming challenge spawners look like they will let us farm diamonds eventually.
Recovery compasses are INCREDIBLE if, like me, you play on a single account with your young children who tend to get themselves into trouble and don't know where they lost all that gear you gave them.
38:31 Truest words I’ve ever heard
The music that plays in the deep dark is so scary 😵
Finally, a Pixlriffs video where I’m early 😂
I remembered the existence of those Redstone tutoring rooms! But I didn't know where they were, so I was starting to think I had just imagined it.
Thanks for reminding me!
25:06 I don't think you have mentioned yet, that sculk sensors will multiply, and may multiply into a sculk shrieker. The sensors can keep being dangerous.
I finally got through the earlier episodes of season 3, so i can watch the new ones.
You were lucky. I usually collect 2 and a half stack of shriekers per city. I have to muffle a large portion of the sections with wool to prevent chain reactions. Those shriekers sometimes deep in the walls 3 or 4 blocks in. In 9 cities only summoned the Warden 2 times. Thanks to the well hidden embedded shriekers. Great tutorial btw.😊
Last night while looking forward to watching this video in bed, I somehow put on the Ancient city video from survival guide 2 instead. I was a bit confused how you already had full netherite armour, but apart from that I didn't question it too much. I guess I'll treat myself to another tutorial on ancient city and the warden then! Cheers pixl!
Ancient city? Aw, just a walk in the park, eh? Well, if you got the skills. Been watching the series for years and I continue to enjoy it.
Always watch your videos while working! more power!
Wow, you made that look so easy!!
I knew about the redstone rooms, but couldn't figure out how to get in. Thanks for teaching me that.
Have you considered stocking up & using Night Vision potions when you are doing survival guide videos like this one (where visibility is an issue)?
I think it would be of particular benefit to use on THIS specific video (Ancient city), where placing torches is risky.
Sure, it might ruin the scary "ambiance", but it would make it more visible to the audience.
For our first visit, I'd rather brighten the video artificially in the edit (which I've done here, boosting the gamma) than lose the ambience. I'll probably look around with Night Vision in future, but I like to keep our first encounter with these features 'as intended'.
Beyond that, I think removing lighting actually makes the ancient city *more* visually confusing, because it eliminates any shadows on the very busy deepslate texture, and I can't rely on lighting up areas to see where I've been.
@@Pixlriffs Understandable. Just thought I'd throw that out there as an option to consider.
Personally? My eyes aren't as good in recent years as they used to be, and there were a few points when I was completely dependent on your description of what I was "seeing". (Because I couldn't actually "see" it myself.)
So, I thought, "Night Vision potions! Yeah, maybe that would be a good idea?".
But I "see" your point. lol
Still seeking Information because I Just Came Across The Deep Dark And Now Seeking Information Before Entering!! Thanks For This Very Informative Video!!!🙌 (Hope I don't Die In My 3 Year Old Hardcore World)
Didn't realize yesterday's upload wasn't on a friday 😂
There is a totally cheap way to avoid detection as well, all you do is slap a trap door of the side of a skulking sensor that is close enough to trigger a shrieker, let it spawn the warden and explore to your hearts content.
Will there ever be an answer to the ignition of the ancient city portal and entering the 4th dimension, the shallow dark
I feel like they got the inspiration for the ancient cities from the legend of Shambala in Tibet. The Warden, although not a snow creature, could possibly be inspired by the Yeti.
The geode in the beginning looked like a ❤
One VERY important thing to mention about ancient cities in general is the game will create the world first and generate structures second. This includes the entire bounding box for the city and it will place individual pieces of the city based on a % roll AFTER the world terrain is generated. What does this mean? On rare occasions, skulk sensors and shriekers can both spawn buried underground or with buildings on top of them, meaning there could always be both blocks hidden out of sight. Even after you remove every visible shrieker, always assume there is another underground you do not see until you can safely run without triggering any.
Many times I have completely defanged a city of every shrieker only to trigger another buried deep in the skulk and have only found them after obliterating the entire floor to find it. You have a 10 second window when a shrieker activates in which no other trigger will count. If you set one off unexpectedly, use this time to destroy as many as you can or dig as much as possible to find the hidden ones. They will most commonly be 1-2 blocks down among skulk blocks as they must spawn on them. The building that is the most common offender for buried shriekers is the larger structure with 2 chests either side of a small alter with a covered hall to one side with a skeleton skull inside. Be especially careful of that one and any building or city floor that is mostly or entirely skulk. The central hub of the city is also notorious for buried shriekers for the sheer size of the building footprint.
Thank you so much for this video! It helps a lot ❤
I raided over 16 ancient cities to get that damn silence trim....suffice it to say I have allot of the other loot you normally find there. Actually I have enough swift sneak books to fill up a shulkerbox that I put into my brand new auto filling bookcase 😎
awesome video, thanks for giving the warden a few minutes of camera time hahaha
I Madara declare you💖 strongest of them all in Minecraft 😁
Night vision potion might help your ancient city raid
My standard ancient city gear is a shulker of nightvision and a shulker of wool if not 2 of them.
Pix, you really made it look so easy to raid an ancient city. I watched your techniques closely and look forward to your vids on "uses for the warden"
Pixlriffs, is there any way to turn on captions on PS5 bedrock? P.S. Awesome content, I love the series!
In uhhh my way, I just build a small camp in the city or near the city, then unequip all my items and just speedrun it
Love the video. Keep going!😇
Amazing. Excellent minecraft player and very knowledgeable man. Pixlriffs my favorite minecraft player youtuber :D
I once had a warden get stuck between a wall and a sensor it kept setting off itself, it was hillarious
Might as well pillar up to max height and fall down that hole to get the achievement. You have the hard part done lol
tip: dont stand on top of sensors or shriekers as this will trigger them even if you are crouching
you could have got all the ores if you mined them from lowest y-level to highest y-level... that way there wouldn't be any ore blocks below for the mined ores to fall on to...every ore mined would have fell directly into the water below
Maybe I didn't explain it very well at the beginning of the video, but you are describing what I did.
@@Pixlriffs that makes sense. maybe i misunderstood what you were saying
Reinforced Deepslate is the only craftable unbreakable block in the game. Sure we don't have the recipe for it anymore, but SOMEONE built that gateway at some point. Which begs the question.. reinforced with WHAT?
There is a way to "pacify the warden use 2 observers facing into one another and outputting to a piston impulsesv used that method to move wardens to another hermit's base and found that it maid the it easy
If you cannot find the trims you want, the Survival Guide Season 3 seed still has four cities close to spawn, including the one bellow the Cherry Grove mountain. Great introduction to the scariest addition to Minecraft in ages, the Ancient City. Made the process look like a breeze even while your heart rate must have been, to use a Pixlriffs term, substantial.
the warden: i can smell you 👁👄👁
26:26 We're doing pretty well, actually... :D
(Literally 6 seconds later...)
26:32 NOPE!
😂🤣
The blue, light blue and cyan wool, and dark oak logs, strongly reminiscent of the Woodland Mansion. Pillager campsite? Pillagers pillaging the city?
Great series Pix and thank you so much for all the inspiration you have given me throughout my yet short but wonderful time playing.
I've googled and searched for a thing that I keep hitting a wall with and hoping the community can help with, I am building a thing where I want other players access to use buttons etc but not break blocks, I however wamt them to be able to till dirt and make dirt path. Does tilling amd dirt path making count as destroying block?
This is for a redstone circuit where a player enter room where they have to till or path block that has an observer next to it and the action opens door, I am not sure if this is possible inside a claim with only access trust. Please Obi Van, help me.
That sounds like a job for command blocks. I would suggest looking that up.
Have you considered that copper grating might be Mojang's answer to our request for renewable class? I think it looks good, but if this is supposed to replace glass, I wish it were more transparent.
We have renewable glass, villagers sell it
I’ve seen someone build a villager farm for glass and other villager trades. That was very complicated. Rotating villagers around while he ran an auto clicker AFK. Not nearly as productive as a copper farm with drowns. Sand is being used for glass concrete and TNT and sandstone. Taking glass out of the equation reduces the desire for sand duping. Sorry, I meant to mention sand duping.
Does anyone know the theory for this: if deepslate blocks including tiles and brick from ancient cities were able to be infected by sculk catalyst and create shriekers that can summon a warden.
But if you go kill a mob in the same exact ancient city, the sculk only affects deepslate just regular deepslate not cobbled deepslate or bricks, they get turned into sculk veins instead and the sculk catalyst that don't do anything.
Trigger them as many times as you want. What happened to the sculk overtime? Was it so powerful and weakened over time?
best day ever
Awesome 🏆
I'd love to watch pix playing henry stickmin on twitch 🤣
wow picklericks upload
Yay🎉
Id like to know the detection range of the wardens. Cause i spawned one accidentally and pillared up about 25 to 30 blocks above it with wool and it somehow shot me while standing on the wool. If wool isnt supposed to make noise then how did it detect me. I got up there before the warden was fully out of the ground too
The warden has the ability to smell you if youre close enough
Redstone features Mechanics next episode please
Wake up babe, new survival guide episode just dropped. I gotta make a new schedule for this it would seem.
38:35 😂
Love it
You should build a large mincraft museum where you have examples of the loot from various structures and archeological sites as well as cords for all the places you've found. You could even find multiples of the same struck and rebuild them
I.e Survival Guide S1
I didn't watch season 1 is that what it was?
I just finished the video of where he mines with moss and saw this.
Your name has been Pixlriffs... and it still is. Very helpful video, mate, but apart from the Swift Sneak - which is most useful in the Ancient City you just plundered - it seems the danger and trouble far exceed the reward. Music discs? I listen to my own music. Armor trim? I play solo, and netherite purple is nice enough. Seems to me what you need is a recipe for wool boots. The Silent Armor trim is cool, but you might need to raid 100 Ancient Cities before finding one. If the portal activates, now THAT would be a reason to go there.
I had my full netherite gear and weapons and i wake up warden and that fullowed me and killed me i thought to go down but there was a bedrock and i got killed and all my gear gone 😩 i went there but not found anything and also may be it was up the hole i dig but the warden just spwaned there as i started building up and i just ran out , i was somewhat lucky i put the book swift sneak book in the enderchest but my sreaker , sensor and catalyst i collected were gone , that make me more sad then the gear
I was cautious but i not know going up and down ladder also trip the shreaker that was the very reason for my elimination i keep that in mind next time
u sneak around there like if u made that ancient city
Try fighting a Warden next episode and kill it
that’s gonna be at least a shulker and a half of coal once its fortuned....maybe I will do this in my world

Have you been copying Bigsb? Lol
Not sure who that is!
Cool exploration :)
I think last season's Ancient City was a bit more exciting but you were doing lots of trolling on the Warden. lol
Your method is certainly more exciting than mine. I sneak through, surround everything in wool then carefully open one at a time, eliminating them. It is extremely methodical and boring to watch. lol
And speaking of things to watch, you didn't seem to have any bat problems this season. Last season you had bats flying around, setting of the sensors and were worried they might cause a shrieker to activate and, also, just annoy and confuse you as to who was tripping what. I, too, have bats in my city but I find them to be quite helpful in finding sensors. My best example was on my last play. I approached half of a city that was also lower down and around a corner. The bats were flying around, setting off the sensors, almost kind of showing me where they were all at, like dolphins and treasure. It was horrifying and beautiful to watch as about a dozen sensors in one area were triggering off in the half dark and giving me a good mapping of where they were. I liked his help so much, I named him Batty. Alas, poor Batty met his end while flying around a sensor that was perched over the ledge of a lava pit. Just burst into flames midair. The deep dark wants to keep its secrets, I guess.
So, I'm wondering if this season you'll do a reclamation of an ancient city?
