A lot of people have financed tractors in the past three years. We're going to see a lot of fire sales as people can't afford them any longer, the way the economy is currently going.
Good points to check with the dealer beforehand.

I like this type of video especially from a trustworthy source as yerself. This saves lots of legwork of constantly shopping around and checking pricing trends. It's like a full service tractor channel on what equipment to buy or avoid along with savings codes. Etc. The list could go on and on. Variety is the spice of life.

Nice work Tim. As a tractor owner, I enjoy this info. It’s good to know the market climate with things that I have an interest in. After all, if I’m gasping at the price of a new tractor, I can also think…”Look how much mine is worth!” It keeps the dream alive😂. Blessings.

A friend has got information on a “free tractor” in up state New York. Story is that a deceased farmer requested that the machine be given away to a deserving cause. You only need to pay for shipping. He got pictures via email of a Kubota 3 series with a loader. Shipping cost would be around $2,000. The lead came from a local John Deere dealership. He was encouraged to make up his mind quickly and pre pay for shipping. He didn’t fall for the scam.

one thing I would check for sure, put the tractor on a level flat surface make sure the loader and 3 point make contact with the ground evenly, so you know it hasn't been twisted in one way or another, same for the axel spacing front to back, side to side and corner to corner basic alignment cause it is hard to know how forceful one may have used it or over loaded it, it is also much better if they have a service record for said machine, which honestly any owner should keep anyways

Great video, and sound advice. I was all set to buy new, package from either Deere or Mahindra. Am fortunate that am very close to three good dealers of Red/Green/ Orange. But I ended up buying from a private party, a 2019 Mahindra with 120 hours, loader, belly mower, titan forks, rotary cutter, post hole digger, tiller and seeder for 16K, all same age. The caveat was an electrical issue, that the owner got frustrated with his dealer on. Long story short the local dealer verified serial number, checked ownership through the dealer he had bought from, always check to your point Sir. Owner had Stored inside but found out through the dealer when this was new sat on the lot outside for an extended time… moisture had gotten in the loom. To your point, first time new to tractors should walk away labor at the dealer is ave 120/hr, but am fortunate with mechanical skills was able to diagnose and find the issue, corroded connections…a little rewire, GTG, great running little tractor. Little long story, but these types of videos are educational/entertaining and of value to folks like me, imo.

The used market is starting to come back down to earth after the astronomical price increases that occurred during and after the pandemic. While the used market is coming back to earth, the new tractor market is still on a steady rise. What once was a $20k tractor is now costing $30-35k.

No problem with the content today. I think something you could add is that the buyer should be comfortable with the amount of work they will need to do. I bought a project tractor, Kubota BX 1500, that needed major repairs with the engine. Half of the engine was missing. No parts, just a lower end and that's it. It did come with a mower deck, but no loader. So, I thought about what I would use it for, and how much my skill level would match the project. It was a little stretch, but today it's running with a new-used engine and I'm working on putting it back to better than it was originally. I'm adding hydraulics to use a snowblower and sweeper\thatcher.
It's what I want it to be. I have spent a fair amount of money, but I don't think I've exceeded the value in usefulness. I remember this guy on the internet who bought a little tractor and said it was just right for those little jobs where big tractors just wouldn't fit. I have two larger tractors, and they both have their jobs to do, but this tractor just fits. 😉 God Bless and keep doing what you do.

I'm looking at to purchase a Kubota 2200 $5,500. I'm going to pick it up tomorrow. 800 hours on it. Drove it for about 10 minutes, and everything seemed normal for the condition it was in. Going to have a more experienced guy take another look at it when I pick it up.
I also looked at a John Deere 650. Unfortunately, it looked like they spray painted the engine, the belt was frayed and painted green, the coolant resivor was Jerry rigged. Even though it looked and ran good there was little warning signs.

Very good video, and I like that you stressed the point again of the legalities of buying a product, whether it has been stolen or may have a lean.
I remember your video about the problem you had with the tractor you had bought at an auction, and at that time I was shocked. I had believed any auction would safe guard against such things, and have been extremely careful with any purchases I have made since then. Yes, it did save me once that I was over cautious, it seemed too good to be true, and shortly after I found out the person was charged with theft of that product. After that I have been even more cautious.
Just recently, not too far away a women bought a car from a residence. The gentleman passed away, and the vehicle was advertised on FB. She went, it was a good deal, bought it, they gave her the title, the next week, she was pulled over because of a problem with the plate and vehicle not matching. When the police ran the VIN, it had been stolen and they forged the transfer of the title, even sold it out of the deceased mans home. Of course she was shocked that anyone could possibly do that to anyone, and is having to defend herself in this as she is in possession of it. Luckily she has the texts, and FB messages of the transaction to cover her, but more than likely will never recoup the money she is out.

Good information Tim. Yes, the inflation and price increases of the last couple years on everything has been bonkers.
I retired a year ago after 17 years pushing Green and did a lot of what you talked about with customers looking at used equipment. Don't have to do it, but you are good to those who have been good to you. But there is quite a lot of information that can be learned as long as it's been run through the JD system. You can't know if some "Buddies with tools" worked on it, but most always, since they have nice warranties today, a customer is going to run it through their dealer.
Mostly I did this with ag equipment, but you will see every service summary and can dive deeper an find the service reports. This is where you see the who what where of it all. And the all important pip's and required or fix as failed warranty.
Owner history and geography - man, you can learn some amazing histories of equipment that make you scratch your head. I was tracing a tractor for a customer coming up at auction once. After mapping it out (google maps is amazing) I found it had been a professional auction tractor for the last 7 years and was rented out a few times putting only 300 hours on it in that time. Makes ya wonder, who lost their ass on that thing originally?
So, got a good relationship with your dealer? They can be of great help. But beware - it's scam city out there - and repo tractors are real! if it's too good to be true? it isn't HAHA!

Ok, well enough but the salesperson never offered to leave his computer screen or his desk to actually show me the tractor (two on the lot just outside the door). Very good video for the novice owner. I own a heavy equipment company primarily engaged in highway, road and bridge construction. My equipment, 32 units, range from the smallest ( B26 Kubota BHL ) to the massive ( Cat 395 excavator ). I buy virtually every piece used at auction saving literally millions of dollars over the years. Depreciation is always the buyers advantage, the sellers pain. I follow two simple rules. First, I hire an independent inspector for the pieces I’m interested in. For $1000, sometimes more depending on the complexity of the equipment, I get a thorough, expert inspection. I know exactly what is good, bad or indifferent. Secondly, I know the market and never up bid over what is reasonable. There will always be others and I never buy out of desperation or impulse.
For a tiny subcompact tractor, it only makes sense to buy used. The spread between new and used is often 50% or more. Buying direct from the owner is of course an option, given that they will allow the inspection and hopefully have all the service logs.
For the novice, unless you plan to use the tractor .. no matter the size, on a weekly if not daily basis tackling jobs that normally would be contracted out, skip buying and rent. Much less painful in the long run.

Tim great advice, got lucky once 9 years ago with a used no big name tractor now I'm ready to upgrade to bigger and better but its a scary process, not just with the new Vs used, auctions Vs facebook, but all of the makes and models not to mention where they are made but parts and dealer support or lack of. New is a pipe dream as I'm retried on a fixed income but a dependable reliable tractor with accessories will make my remaining golden years more fruitful.

I’ve been noticing some good deals recently on very capable tractors. For example a used 2019 Yanmar YT359 ROPS with 500hrs for $27K still with 6 years of power train warranty left. That’s a 60hp premium tractor for less than a new 1025R. Also saw a 2020 Kioti DK5310SE Cab with 200hrs and a 6ft mower for $32K. You’re right the used tractor market has leveled off. Might go used for my next tractor if buying new continues to be so expensive.

Tim I just purchased a John Deere 1025r year 2017 period from my local dealer hey Adam on sale for the fall it came with the loader and the 60 inch mower deck I got it for 13,500 with tax. It has 348 hours. And was Full Service before I took possession I might have been able to wiggle on the price but I traded off one of my older tractors which I only got 7000 for the trade who was the 2940 John Deere 100 horse four wheel drive I said no more use for because I don't Farm anymore. It needed some service and some love the tractor ran they told me they were going to ask 10,000 for it I agreed cuz I didn't want to put any more money into it my point is the new tractor was 29,000 with my trade I got the 1025r for another 6500 with tax. So it's a good t o, purchase I used tractor from a dealer. A whole lot less concerns that way.

This was great! Thank you. I’m going to look for any others where you might cover what to look for used. I am thinking of one with loader and backhoe already installed, seems like the best value in the used market. I can pick up a mower deck almost new for $1k. Seems like this is a better value than waiting for the 25MY changes, although I want them. I read the air ride seat won’t work with the backhoe anyway.

Not sure how it works in other states but in Ohio I asked a dealer via email about getting a 1025R for my small farm, since the farm is a farm then it falls under farm tax exempt for equipment, seed, feed or chemicals bought for the farm it's self, the John Deere dealer told me a 1025R would be tax exempt for me but someone buying 1 for standard residential use would still pay taxes on it per the norm. Thought I would throw that out there in case anyone like me was looking at 1 for their farm and was wondering if a small tractor like that would qualify for farm use.

Think it was roughly $24,500 range I paid for my 1025R tractor loader backhoe and mower back in 2017. Dealer told me it’s roughly $10,000 more today for same setup brand new. Prices sure have jumped. Similar with pallet forks the set I picked up at the dealer was under $600 in 2019 now I’m told by other looking for a set can’t touch em for under a $1,000
