Finally a recipe on TH-cam with the fried onions on top. This is the way my mother made it for us in the 80s and it is the best way. Total game changer.
We always put cheese on half & then actual broken up bread, we call them “crunchies”. Best part, even left over. Lots of pepper & peas on the side!! When you’re broke, this is a filling meal that’s easy to stretch for minimal $$. Love it!! My mom made it, her kids make it....you can also substitute brown rice! Yumm!!
Here is best orginal recipe. 1 bag extra wide egg noodles 3 cans mushroom soup 2-3 cans of white albacore solid tuna 1 can mushrooms or use fresh and sauté. 1-1/2 cup milk 1 bags peas (it’s great without the peas too) Italian bread crumbs 4T butter French fried onions Mix everything together and add to casserole dish Add slivers of the butter on top all around Add the bread crumbs on top (don’t go too heavy) Bake for 35 mins at 350. Pull out and add French fried onions, bake for additional 5 mins.
The tuna casserole I ate growing up was identical to this, but with grated cheddar cheese and crushed potato chips on top instead of bread crumbs and fried onions. So good! I’ve heard that some people put crushed corn flakes on top, but I’ve never tried that.
I've had all the topping versions: bread crumbs, potato chips, corn flakes, saltines. Corn flakes is the best one. No cheese though. Too overpowering, I think. I don't like cheese in my grits either. 👍🥳😋
My daughter does not like peas. So I have 2 ways to substitute this. When I use cream of mushroom, I use real mushroom. If they want cream of celery, I chop up celery. Once in awhile I still crave for the original. It's still fun to put a spin on it.
You should try tuna noodle with just milk but add velveeta cheese and a mixture of cheddar, and you layer the casserole like a lasagna. It starts with tuna on the bottom with noodles mixed in and then the two cheeses, and repeat, until you get to the top which is the combination of the cheeses. Then fill the casserole up halfway with milk, absolutely no Campbells involved in this recipie, and then add more of the two cheeses on top, and add Ruffles potato chips on top for the crunch and bake. Totally different recipe, but my family did not like Cream of anything, so we punted.
Where's the cheese??!!! I make mine with 2 cans of cream of celery(I don't like mushrooms), 1/2 cup milk, 1/2 cup mayo, medium cheddar cheese, green pepper, onion, solid white albacore tuna (this is important), salt and pepper.. cook the noodles and combine other ingredients in a saucepan until cheese is melted and everything incorporated.. mix in noodles and put in casserole dish..top with sharp cheddar.. oh my goodness best recipe ever I promise!
Sorry Drew I clicked on full recipe and got it, I apologize...it’s funny because I pulled the recipe of the internet to make tonight, gray minds think a like lol💋
@@beth952 I dunno but been making it for 40 years with no cheese and you must add french fried onions on top of the breadcrumbs the last 5 mins. It's a gamechanger.

I grew up doing macaroni & cheese, tuna and peas. If I had chips or anything, crunch those on top. It's been a favorite for me my entire life.

@@marcuspi999 I'll need to try it with the cornflakes. I agree with you about the cheese. My family likes it, but I find it too overpowering.
Look so good
It looks delicious 😋
Campbell's Golden Mushroom Soup is also tasty.
Always put grated cheese on top, but never tried breadcrumbs. Sounds yummy !
Thumbs up to a new dinner dish

Growing up my mom put cheese on top.
What kind of noodle did she put in?
In the thumbnail, it looks like her hair is swinging into the food. 😂

Where's the cheese Drew?
Some of us think cheese on tuna casserole is sacrilegious. Too strong. It puts the tuna flavor in a supporting role.
Original recipe doesn’t have cheese. Overpowers the tuna.
@@nestlundWho invented the original?

@nestlund I'll try that, I have plenty of those in pantry. Thanks
That looks so bland! No seasoning, no cheese, and no cream?!
It’s supposed to have salt & pepper but it’s typically a Midwest dish and they don’t like seasoning or flavor 🤷🏻♀️
Right?! I out my recipe in the comments it's soooooo good!
Where r the measurements.
For God's sake Drew!! Do something to tie your hair back in the kitchen!!!
Yum
