I purchased a new Sony a6000 a couple of weeks ago and I'm blown away with what a great feature rich camera it is! I was looking for lens reviews to use with this camera body when I luckily found your detailed review of the Sigma 60mm f2.8 DN Art Lens. After watching this review I decided to purchase this lens. I received my lens in the mail today, on 12/28/2016, and gave it a test run as soon as I received it. The lens is exactly as you detailed and is indeed as amazingly sharp as you shared in your review! Your review sold me on this lens and I simply wanted to let you know I couldn't be happier with my purchase! This truly is an amazing lens!
One of the best lens reviews I have seen for some time.......you have made me return to using this excellent lens, after it languished for a year or so in the bottom of my camera bag.....Thank You.
The photos from this lens are truly exceptional and the value is hard to beat. I absolutely love it. You are not the only reviewer to rave about this lens (photozone and admiring light raved too).
Just popped for a new camera...the Sony a6000 silver. Price was a crazy $550 with kit lens, Wasabi dual battery & charger, 32 GB card & mini bag. Same thing today is like $750 plus. Cool! Now...on to the prime lens reviews...so professional with point by point detail. Excellent presentations (talking about the Sigma prime trio here). Thanks for such a good job from your newest subscriber.
Became interested in the A6000, and wanted to check lots of reviews for the camera and lens options - am impressed with your serious, professional reviews (even before I learned you are based here in the valley of the sun.) Thanks for sharing your knowledge in a helpful way.
Great review, I have just purchased the Sigma 30mm and the sigma 60mm for my A6000 and they are excellent, giving me great detail on portrait photos. Keep bringing reviews on more lenses for the A6000.
I use the M43 version of this lens, and the 19mm, and find the performance of both to be extraordinary. On a scale of 1 to 10 for value, these two score 11!
Love all the sigma art series lenses for my A6000. But the 60mm is the standout. I take a lot of shots of my family and friends while we sit in cafe's. It is perfect for portraits.
David, thanks so much for the unbiased reviews of the sigma prime lens. I have the a6000 and its my go to camera! I shoot sony only, and have lots of a mount lens. Anyway ive been looking at the sigma lineup and after your reviews, i will be getting the lineup. Amazing lens for the money! Thanks again, Fred
with my 1670 this do not happen or earlier before exchanging Sigma 30f28 it did not happen. this happened only on this lens 60f28. I somewhat understood your question. I usually switch of the camera and attach the lens and I did the same for 60f28. sometimes it is quick and often this error happens with a total out of focus display on the LCD and also in EVF. I tried removing it and putting back on. after several tries it will focus and that AF MOTOR sound stops. Once it focuses then no problem. This problem occurs only when switch off and on
I recently got the 19mm Sigma 2.8 for my a5100. Amazingly sharp edge to edge and fast autofocus. I did not expect a wider angle lens to be so free of distortion and so sharp at the edges. Tip for non-sony lenses: try different autofocus modes as some modes will limit the autofocus area to a small area in the middle when using non-sony lenses.
It's an excellent portrait lens and performs as well as any other similar optic. It's not necessary to obsess about pixels and other pointless technical issues. If you're an imaginative and reasonably able photographer, you'll enjoy this lens.
I ordered the 19mm this morning and got the 30mm when I bought my A6000. 60 is on my wish list. Thanks for helping me make my decision on getting this camera. Love your videos!
With limited options for the Sony E mounts, the Sigmas lens are not only a great option but at fantastic value. The DXMO mark for the 60mm Sigma places it third overall against all other lenses and first for sharpness. When you consider the price, this is a must have prime lens.
Thanks for the review!! Ive been waiting for a review of the a6000 with the sigma 60mm. I think im gona have to pair that lens with my a6000 now. Love your videos btw.
And not to forget the price. This is on special for $209 at B&H just now. Insane for this quality of glass. And I see it's near the top of the DXO list for E mount fixed focal length lenses. I'm holding out for the A7000 (my first mirrorless camera) soon to be released, but this lens will definitely be coming with it.
Agree Seth Burgess I would go with the all black version - but then again, the relatively low cost of the lens versus the IQ it is capable of makes me think one could live with a limited resale value.
Hi, love your video's..... I just got the A6000, always uses DSLR's and now trying to get my head around using this potentially in professional situations.... I was curious what your preferred method of focusing was for portraits?.....There are so many options and points of view.... I love to have critical focus on the eye of course with nice sweet drop off from there.....I am assuming you don't just rely on auto focus? You mention portrait mode in this video but do you rely on that?
If I'm using this lens then face recognition or continuous af with focus tracking both work really well. Manual also works but tracking is amazing. I have admit though MF on a legacy lens is also amazingly easy with focus peaking.
First of all I would like to thank you for those great reviews. I just bought only the body of Sony a6000 and now I am looking to see which lens to buy. I am not a professional and I only use the camera as a hobby and for family shooting (mostly outdoors). For the summer I was thinking to begin with the Sigma 60mm. I must say that I do a lot of pixel peeping and I like to get results as sharp as possible. 95% of photograph shooting is handheld... I do have steady hands and have experience with dSLR cameras (450D, 60D) Since I do a lot of handheld shooting... do you believe that the lack of OSS is going to give me less sharpness than the 50mm OSS? Which one do you recommend? Sorry if this kind of question is already answered
solaris2k4 The sigma 60mm is the sharpest lens for e-mount. OSS does help but not much and does shut off while bursting. Here is my list of worthy lenses. www.lavikkaphotography.com/blog
Awesome review man appreciate this! You have me looking at sigma lenses again...hopefully all the copies come out more consistent on the mirrorless line. DSLR lenses by Sigma were hit or miss for the sony alpha line back in the day I don't know if that's still the case.
Do you use single shot mode or continuous autofocus with the Sigma and Sony? I read that the phase detect autofocus is very limited with this lens. Thank you for your excellent commentary.
I want to get a different lens than just the kit lenses that my A6300 is coming with (16-50, 55-210) I am torn between the Sony 35mm 1.8, Sony 50mm 1.8, or this Sigma 60mm......which lens would you choose???
Hi bought this Camera this week!! plus the sigma f2.8 art 60mm lens, On the straith of your videos!! Still trying to work out the settings? So far I found that the image stabilisation or camera shake and eye focus don't work on a none sony lens, I`v looked at other videos no one seems to mention this, And the Manual is as much use as a fridge to a escemo!!!!! Keep up the good work.
Great video! Very informative! If you were buying this camera and could start with one lens... portrait and landscape, would you get this lens or? Thanks
Thank you for your review. I am thinking of getting a Sony A6000 for shots of family during holidays. Would this lens be appropriate? If not, what lens? Also, what lens for a little street photography and astrophotography? Again, thanks for taking the time to review the lens.
You do such a great job with the reviews. Thanks for that. Have you mentioned what your favorite lens is so far for your A6000? I know that's a subjective thing, depending on how/what you shoot, but I was just curious. Also, other than vintage glass+adapter, what would you use for portraits? I'm ready to buy another lens (I have the 18-105) and would like something that lets in a little more light. Thanks!
Great review. I was a bit hesitant if this lens is any good (due to the price point mainly - I thought it should be more than that for the good lens)). But this review and some other (pointing to the sharp image and beautiful bokeh background), made it clear what lens to buy for my son to replace kit lens on his A6000. Now Sigma 60mm f2.8 EX DN Art is on its way from Japan.
Thanks for your review. I love cheap but good quality lenses :). This is one of them. If I am correct your next review will be Sigma 30mm f2.8 DN Art lens? I was wondering if you use the old (not Art) or the new Art lens. I heard that the old one is better. Anyway, I'm looking forward to see your next review.
Helpful review! I’m somewhat a beginner in photography as the a6000 is my first camera, still shooting with the kit lens currently. I’m looking to purchase my first lens and I’m torn between the sigma 30mm f1.4 or the 60mm f2.8... Any recommendations? I shoot mainly portraits
Lavikka Photography Is there much of a difference between the two? Like in the end result, is it worth it to have both? I may have to decide one or the other, although they are both super cheap..
Hi- I'm very amateur and love my sony a6000. I just purchased this lens thanks to your great review. I have a question-this may be obvious, but can I zoom in with this lens? Up until now I've been using the kit lens and it's got easy zooming on the actual lens. Can I also zoom in/out with the sigma 60mm? Also, any idea how I can set the aperture to 2.8? It seems my camera has automatic aperture adjusting and I want to keep the aperture at the best portrait setting. Thanks!
It's not a zoom however you can enable digital zoom to get it to crop in a bit but the results won't be good. To change the aperture you have to put the camera on either manual or aperture priority.
Hey David! So I just got an a6000 because I will be traveling abroad for the next 5 years, and I'm hoping to hone in on landscape and street photography. I've been really interested in the sigma 30mm f2.8 because it seems like a quality inexpensive lens, but now this one has peaked my interest as well. I was wondering if you had any recommendations for a lens or two that would work well for the type of photography I hoping to do.
+Lavikka Photography thank you, David. Is there a big difference between the sigma 30mm f1.4 vs f2.8 besides the wider aperture? In terms of image quality. the 1.4 seems newer and about twice the price
Great review! I was considering the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens but I will have to pay extra for an adapter so it can fit my a6000. I am looking for a nifty 50, do you recommend any really good ones that will fit the a6000 or would I be good with the Sigma 60mm Art?
Thank you so much for your amazing video. I'm so confused what to buy. The 60mm or the 30mm. What are the differences? Which is better to use in general propose shooting, specially indoor and in low light situations? And finally, should I buy Sigma lenses or get the "Sony SEL50F18/B 50mm f/1.8" Does it really worth the extra 100$ only for OSS? Although the Sigma is sharper (am I correct, Sigma is sharper than Sony)??
The sigma is sharper in the corners. They are about the same in the middle. The 60 is more of a portrait lens. The sony 50 is good in low light with the oss. My issue with the sony is it's so soft wide open.
Thank you for this video, I currently own the Sony a6000 and was looking for a telephoto lens to do portrait photography at a reasonable price. I currently own the Sony 35mm f1.8 lens and now will purchase this lens.
Appreciate your video, I was convinced to buy one. very detailed testing and professional advice about the lens AF feature. As a beginner to use sony lens, I found this lens more useful than other high end lens.
I just bought the A6000 and I used to use a Nikon d90 with the 35 and 50 1.8 primes. Im having crazy thoughts and worries about the size of this thing its soo small. Do you think the sigma primes i.e 30 f2.8 and the 60 f2.8 are as good as the Nikon glass i have been using. I have been considering selling the Sony A6000 and go back to the Nikon but I keep seeing reviews like yours showing how good this thing is. Im not sure what to do. Great videos by the way keep them coming.
Hi Lavikka and thank you for your videos. I have a question for you, i have a sony nex7, and i have buy this lenses Sigma 60mm, because i trust you review, and i like it very. I like to take photos of my kids, and they don't stop one minute, so on Sony nex7 autofocus it's not very fast so i have many blur photos. I like to buy the Sony A6000, because they say autofocus it's very fast. My question is, do you think that A6000 + this sigma 60mm is fast enough to take kids photos ? track kids when they move or run ? Sony nex7 is not good for this. Will i see great increase between a6000 and sony nex7 with these lens ? Because i heard that A6000 with non sony lenses (like this sigma) are not so fast. Do you confirm , or should i buy A6000 and expect a big difference? You only show video focus, so i can not see in internet photos with movement with this lenses . How they behave a6000 + Sigma 60mm thank you
This video is also just superbly well done (quality, pictures, sound and informations) Thumb up easy. On thing about that lens, is all the electronics of the lens is link to the A6000 body? We didn’t see the contact pins. Thanks and well done. :)
Hi Davin! I was wondering what are your thoughts of the Sony 50mm f/1.8 OSS? It seems to be a very good rival with the sigma 60mm yet I cant seem to find any videos with a comparison anywhere online but would really love to see one. I hear the Bokeh is better on the 50mm but I wonder how much. Im also curious how the 50mm performs with the OSS compared to the 60mm w/out it.
Hi Andrew I had one before I started the reviews. I found rather disappointing. Very similar to the 35mm I did review. Wide open is soft and it has ghosting so hard to auto focus at f1.8 at f2.8 things get a lot better, sharp center with soft corners and its like that throughout the f stops in the lens. It is a good portrait lens. The oss does work but it only saves a little over a stop. smooth's out video a little. The 60 is sharper and has far better corners. The 50 has exaggerated bokeh like the 35mm. The only problem with that is wide open they are full of bokeh fringing. Here is a review for you www.photozone.de/sony_nex/720-sony50f18nex
Lavikka Photography Hey thanks for the reply Davin. I notice I tend to take more portrait and Macro shots(of pendants and such) so the bokeh is a welcome feature. Is shooting wide open ideal for portrait Or will that be too shallow to get the subjects whole head in focus? What is the ideal Fstop for that? Im quite torn between having that extra bokeh with the sony's 1.8 or the sharpness of sigmas 2.8 lens.. i heard somewhere that you wont be able to discern the sharpness between the two until you crop in closer.
I would go wide open for portraits on the 60 and stop down once the 50mm. The 50mm is ideal for people but sucks for macro because of the lack of dof. They are cheap. just get both and return the one you don't like.
Hi-ya, I have purchased sigma 30mm, 19mm and Sony 50mm f1.8 for my nex 7 camera. What's your thoughts on purchasing sigma 60mm. Since I Owen Sony 50mm? Kind regards
thanks for this great review. i learned a lot. i was just wondering, do you have a video explaining about the device i need in order to mount my new sigma 60mm f2.8 DN lens onto my sony alpha6000? i am a newbie 🙂
+Emad nejati More open gives shallower depth of field and more light so yes in a way but I don't know how the character of the bokeh is on the 50mm 1.8. Basically the Sigma lenses are very sharp and fast autofocus for the price. Maybe the new Sigma 30mm 1.4 will be sharp along with its larger opening?
0ooTheMAXXoo0 forget these lenses,i bought a canon fd 50mm f1.4 with adapter for like 50$,and it's amazing it's so easy to use manual lenses in sony mirrorless lineup and it's so much fun.it's so sharp in F2 and killer bokeh, after this(my first manual) i will always looking for sharp and good manual lenses like samyang 85mm f 1.4
Really stuck if i should get the Sigma 60mm 2.8 or the Sony 50mm 1.8 OSS for my next lens. I know the Sigma is sharper than the sony, but im wondering if the 1.8 and OSS will make it a more versatile lens and be more useful in low light. Does anyone have experience of both of these lenses? If so which is the better buy?
I wouldn't even consider the 50mm OSS. It ghosts a lot wide open. The Sony 55mm OSS for full frame is so much better and works fine on the a6000. OSS gives you a two stop advantage in hand held and helps with video but honestly for the money the Sigma is the way to go. It's lighter so hand holding is easy down to a 10th of sec.
***** Sorry I can't replicate the flare at all. I've tried with every studio light here. I wonder if that was an issue with the camera body like the ghosting issue with the Nikon 750.
Lavikka Photography I just compared the two reviews side by side. This image quality is way better on the sigma. He is also getting the 50mm to flare so I'm guessing it is the camera body.
I will be getting the a5100 or 56000 body and was so set on getting the sony 35mm but now im torn with your reviews , i mostly shoot my toddler so i wan something fast and sharp , im really a fan of the blurred background on the 35 . So what would you suggest? The 35mm are pricy so thats why im still holding to buy the body because i want to buy it all the same time . Thank you! Great reviews
I have a question or issue with the same lens. I've used it outdoors a lot and it seems as if dirt has gotten into it. So as I try to use manual focus, it' catches debris in the focus ring and at times gets stuck until I use a little more force to focus. So is there a way for me to clean it and make it a lot smoother to use? Thanks for your help. Keep up the work and videos.
I posted a comment about vintage lenses on the A6000 before, but can you do a specific review on one of your favorite/most used vintage lenses? I've looked around more but I still can't decide on one lens. Cheers
Lavikka Photography I tested the eye focus a little further and it only works in the zone focus area and in my opinion not that well. So you may not like it for that. Technically it doesn't work eye focus start either.
Hi mate, you're probably getting that question quiet often, ... thanks for your time and effort before hand ! I bought the A6000 a few weeks ago and started with the kit lens, which didn't seem too bad to me but I couldn't really compare. After seeing your review about the kit lens, I'm not that impressed anymore. I'm ready to upgrade to a better lens ! 80% I will go for outdoor/landscape/street photography the other 20% will be quiet random I guess. Which one would you recommend ? Thank you very much !
Lavikka Photography Thanks ! I think I'll go for the Sigma 60mm DN lens, how is it for wide landscape ? Is it the top of the range lens or which one would be an upgrade option? But I guess I'd be very impressed with it because I already have fun with the A6000 kit lens haha. Cheers man, keep up the good work :)
Lavikka Photography this or the Sigma 30 2.8 for portrait type work? Sorry, maybe a dumb question but I'm a noob that just switched to Sony (loving it btw). I loved my old Canon 50 1.8 would like something comparable...thought?
that double cab though! I have a 67 bug, and wanting to sell my a900 to jump into the a6000, but not sure if I should put off to see if a newer model is going to be released
I recently bought a6000. I was thinking of buying reasonable priced lenses for General photography like Landscape, Family photos, school events etc. thinking of Sigma 19mm, One of Sigma 30 or Sony 35mm and Sony 55-210 should suffice the purpose. Based on your experience, which combo would you recommend as I don't want to keep more than 3 lenses.
Srishti Khandelwal They are both good but in different ways. The review on the 30mm will be up at the end of the week. Watch my review on the 35mm OSS 1.8 or were you looking at the Sony 30mm F3.5 macro?
Davin Lavikka @ Lavikka Photography I already have the Sony 50mm f/1.8 OSS, so I'm not sure if I should buy this lens. Pretty close focal range (Sigma 60mm vs Sony 50mm), but the Sony is faster and has OSS. Also, from f/2.8 onwards, the Sony is almost as sharp as the Sigma. What do you think?
Hello . Just purchased the SonyA600 and looking to upgrade from the kit lens(16-50) . Looking at the Sigma 30mm f2.8 and the 60 . Which would you go with if just going with one(and already had the kit lens) cheers
+Lavikka Photography Thank you very much . I actually have the 19mm on my wish list . I was thinking the 30mm and the 19mm later (I currently have the kit 16-50mm and the 55-210mm) Obviously I'm green as grass at this . cheers
Looking for an advice! i just bought a6000 body and this lense as my first choice (base on all the good reviews I saw). But it feels like I need another lense - I just hate the fact that this lense is not very universal. What should be my second choice lense? I'm looking for a relatively inexpensive option, and I would like to be able to shoot in different situations. I'm really after quality but my budget is limited. .. Thank you so much for your advice.
+Lavikka Photography Sony/Zeiss 28mm f2 vs Sony/Zeiss 24mm f1.8 ? Both look to be roughly the same size, both are highly regarded and have a large fan base. I've seen your very positive review of the 28mm f2 glass...what about the 24mm f1.8? I use a Sony a6000. Better, same-same, what's your experience with it, if any? (love your reviews, keep 'em coming)
Im guessing you meant 30mm f2.8 or 60mm f2.8. If you are using the kit lens then the 30mm is zoomed half way and the 60mm is zoomed all the way out plus a touch more.
Great review. I am really thinking about getting this camera. I'm a die hard canon fan. My 5d pays the bills. I am a little reluctant to adopt a new sustem, but from what Ive seen about this camera it is really looking good and the price point is amazing. Thanks for sharing.
I'd like an a6000 but can't afford, would you reccomend the a5000 with this lens? image quality won't be much different between a5000 and a6000 right? thanks
Hi, Nice explanation in better approach. I am your new subscriber.. So would like to ask a question on Sony a6000 .. I recently brought A6000 and i liked it with kit lens. But i am mainly interested in sharpness and clarity. I always use A6000 on hands, based on your review of Sigma 30 1.4 f DC lens i got one today. But many of my pictures are not sharp because handling with hands. If i shoot very steadily then only pictures are coming sharp.. my main purpose is shooting in indoor, taking pictures of my 1.5 years old daughter and for parties. So what do you recommend for me or any one who handles A6000 with hands.. Is it Sony 35 mm 1.8 or Sigma 30 mm DC DN 1.4 (Currently have but after seeing the pictures got into dilemma).. 50 mm Sony 1.8 OSS or Sigma 60 mm 2.8.. Note: i don't use tripod. Only hands. I appreciate your response. Thank you
Thanks for your response... I only use AF-C or Manual.. All the photos which i took with Sigma 30 1.4 was with AF-C only.. 5 of 3 shots got blurry.. One thing to mention if i did not zoom the picture looks fine but if i zoom i can see the small blur of the objects.. Is it common for every lens or its my handling problem..? Also you aware that when doing back button focus lens makes sound.. Whole lot going on in my mind.. This is my first Camera and Sigma 30 1.4 is my first prime lens. I watched your review like more than 20 times before buying. So my expectation from this lens went to peaks.. Thank you
sounds like a handling issue. Test yourself and see what the slowest speed you can take a picture at. for me its 30th of sec if im impatient and 10th of sec if I have time.
+Adam Strachn If you are talking about walking around and shooting mainly people then you have to realize this is the equivalent of a 90mm lens in a 35mm camera. It is a bit of a zoom. Great for shooting from a bit of distance or extreme close-ups. It would all depend on your style if you would go with this or a wider angle lens like the 30mm or 19mm. Look at the video and you can see how zoomed in the image is when he shoots video to demonstrate the autofocus.
I am relatively new to DSLRs and am looking for a lense to help me with my filmmaking. Being somewhat inexperienced with the different lenses I am unsure whether this sense or the sigma 30mm 2.8 will better suite my needs. I really want that shallow depth of field and bokeh in my shots. Will the 30mm be enough for me to achieve that look or should i purchase the 60mm.
+TacoBananaNacho You should have the 60mm f2.8 and the Sigma 30mm f1.4 DN which I also reviewed. I usually shoot my videos at 30mm. but most news shows with more room shoot at longer focal lengths .
I'm not sure about the focal range. Technially this lens is great but I don't see myself using it. I don't use this focal length for portrait. I'd only use it occasionally for action shots, like events or whatever, but then a zoom would be better wouldn't it.
I am about to make a lens purchase so should i buy this one, or the Sony 50mm or the sigma 30mm. I do majority of pictures of my kids, family, dogs, and I did family portrait photos so just trying to see what lens to buy.
Would this lens be Better to use for beauty videos compared to the 50mm f1.8? With my beauty videos I would be zooming in a lot and I do prefer a blurry background while I do so.
Does anyone else use this lens for macro photography? I get 0.65x magnification with 26mm smart extension tube and a working distance of 6 inches. This is great. I know its not flat-field but still..
Is this a good all round lens for street, landscape etc photography or is there another lens you would recommend. A friend just sold his Zeiss 70mm..missed out on that one.
New subscriber question for you. Do you know if the Eye AF detection works with this lens? My understanding is that it's a contrast-based system and it would... like on the Sony RX100 mark iv.
This truly is an amazing lens!
knives&guns ziess lenses r gud but it's costly lense 😢
knives&guns I have an a 5000 and a6000 the lens works better on the a6000
Although it shuts a little
One of the best lens reviews I have seen for some time.......you have made me return to using this excellent lens, after it languished for a year or so in the bottom of my camera bag.....Thank You.
***** Its pretty good. I will be reviewing it next week. I am going to test it directly against the 20mm pancake.
I bought this lens for my a6000 after watching this review and wow this is the sharpest lens I've owned! Thanks Davin!
I bought this lens about a year ago, tried it but haven't used it much.... I will be now, thanks for the video
"Hear that"..."what the hell is that" Had to laugh, found that quite funny. Subscribed, good Honest reviews.
Great video showing off a great lens on a great camera, how great is that :)
Keep up the good work, I look forward to your coming videos.
As pretty as it is, that lens isn't destined to wear well from a resale perspective - any minor scratch is going to show badly.
Agree Seth Burgess
I would go with the all black version - but then again, the relatively low cost of the lens versus the IQ it is capable of makes me think one could live with a limited resale value.
You always put a wrap on it or something to increase day to day protection :)
Carbon fibre wrap would probably look pretty funky as well.
Mark Reynolds Good idea. gaffers tape would also stop someone from stealing it due to being so ugly.
Thanks for the quick reply - I'm just up the road from you.....great to see a local artist doing well on TH-cam
Thanks. Stop by Method Art some time. I will show you a few tips.
Lavikka Photography Will do - I haven't been there in quite a while.
I do have steady hands and have experience with dSLR cameras (450D, 60D)
Since I do a lot of handheld shooting... do you believe that the lack of OSS is going to give me less sharpness than the 50mm OSS?
I pretty much it on Continuous.
I want to get a different lens than just the kit lenses that my A6300 is coming with (16-50, 55-210) I am torn between the Sony 35mm 1.8, Sony 50mm 1.8, or this Sigma 60mm......which lens would you choose???
hey man i'm having the same problem. so which lens did you get in the end
gearXtreme 35 mm makes around 52 which is the best walk around and blazing fast focus
get the 35. i got the 50 and it was way too close to take a pic of anything anywhere. but outside its a beast with better bokeh than the 35.
You may want to go wider for street and astro photography. Look at the Sony 28mm F2 FE lens.
Thank you.
Sigma 30mm f1.4 first and 60mm at christmas.
Sigma 19mm DN Art SIgma 30mm f1.4 or the Sony 28mm F2 fe lens.
+Lavikka Photography thank you, David. Is there a big difference between the sigma 30mm f1.4 vs f2.8 besides the wider aperture? In terms of image quality. the 1.4 seems newer and about twice the price
Yes. The 30mm is way sharper with less ca's.
+Lavikka Photography thank you so much! keep up the great work! You're really helping a lot of people out
Great review!
Freman Paez The Sigma Art is currently be best lens for Sony E.
Lavikka Photography BTW The Sigma art 50mm review comes out in few weeks.
Lavikka Photography That's what I thought. I'll need an adapter. With lens and adapter I'm looking at around $1400. :/
Just get the Sigma. It's crazy sharp.
The image quality will be way better! The a6000 is a huge step forward compared to the D90.
After seeing this video and looking more into this lens I will pick up. Thank you for the video. Question...can we get more glaring from Murray?
How they behave a6000 + Sigma 60mm
thank you
Here is the guy....Thanks Lavikka, you make greats videos.
This video is also just superbly well done (quality, pictures, sound and informations) Thumb up easy.
On thing about that lens, is all the electronics of the lens is link to the A6000 body? We didn’t see the contact pins.
Thanks and well done. :)
Yes and can be used on high speed focusing settings too.
At 5:30 - it is not lens flare. It is chromatic aberration (purple fringing).
great review just got a sigma 30mm surprised by how good it is on my nex 6
True, thanks so much Davin.
Hi-ya, I have purchased sigma 30mm, 19mm and Sony 50mm f1.8 for my nex 7 camera.
What's your thoughts on purchasing sigma 60mm. Since I Owen Sony 50mm? Kind regards
Keith alani
Sigma is 20% sharper at f2.8 & f4, but i think the OSS is more important. Keep your Sony.
Hey I've been seeing a couple of other reviews where the focus is only limited to the middle. Is that the case with this lens?
Hi lavikka! Would you do a comparative review of phase detection feature of a6000 for sigma and sony lenses? Btw, nice review man!
I can do it on the 30mm.
Lavikka Photography that would be great!! Hope to see your review the soonest!! :)
Lavikka, can you confirm that the fast pdaf/af-c only works on center focus area. Outside the center has the slower cdaf only.
thanks for this great review. i learned a lot. i was just wondering, do you have a video explaining about the device i need in order to mount my new sigma 60mm f2.8 DN lens onto my sony alpha6000? i am a newbie 🙂
You need nothing. It's for e-mount, just plug and play it.
Gito Sibarani ah yes, i figured out that i accidentally bought the micro 3/4 version. had to return it and exchange for e-mount! 😅
Hi, Firstable, Thanks lot for your very interesting reviews. I have the Sigma 30 mm 2.8. Have I buy the 60mm 2.8 ?
+Younes Mahrach it's worth it.
Just came across this review. I recognized Old Town and realized you're a local. I live just a mile away from there and shoot there all the time.
Swing by and say Hi. I own Method Art.
Cool. I will. I usually take a walk down there on Thursday nights. Just bought the a6000 today too.
this is a sharpest lens and is amazing, but i think 50mm f1.8 has better bokeh and better in low light with faster f stop and oss
is it right lavikka?
+Emad nejati More open gives shallower depth of field and more light so yes in a way but I don't know how the character of the bokeh is on the 50mm 1.8. Basically the Sigma lenses are very sharp and fast autofocus for the price. Maybe the new Sigma 30mm 1.4 will be sharp along with its larger opening?
0ooTheMAXXoo0
forget these lenses,i bought a canon fd 50mm f1.4 with adapter for like 50$,and it's amazing it's so easy to use manual lenses in sony mirrorless lineup and it's so much fun.it's so sharp in F2 and killer bokeh, after this(my first manual) i will always looking for sharp and good manual lenses like samyang 85mm f 1.4
+Emad nejati Here you go. th-cam.com/video/3BQ9DywGTCg/w-d-xo.html
Hi waht do you think about the sony sel 50 f1.8 in comaprison to the sigma 60mm f2.8? Which of them would you recommend for the a 6000?
Sven Zimmer I did a review on both. The 60 is sharper overall and wide open. The 50mm is very good just not as sharp wide open.
+Lavikka Photography you are comparing a 2.8 vs a 1.8 you should do both a 2.8
-_- jesasa !!
Thank you! Great reviews
jocy194 Stick with the 35mm. It really is people lens.
I have this lens, currently the best lens for a6000. I love it.
+AllorNothin925 Ouch! I haven't taken one apart yet. Give me two weeks. I may rip mine apart for the heck of it.
I posted a comment about vintage lenses on the A6000 before, but can you do a specific review on one of your favorite/most used vintage lenses? I've looked around more but I still can't decide on one lens.
Cheers
Sure. look for it in a few weeks. I've been thinking about doing that.
Love your reviews!!! Thanks and keep it up!
Hi sir, Does the Sony a6000 limit the 4D focus on all sigma lenses while using AF-C mode? Only 5 focus points in the middle of the frame are allowed
+Am Sopharith It is. but strangely it still works and its fast.
Thanks for your information. Like all your videos with very helpful instructions and information
I like the silver look, but you must use Lens band to protect it when shooting events
Hi David, can you tell that this lens works with eye auto-focus? Happy new year to you and to your crew!
Technically yes but I have never been able to get eye focus to work very well so I can't really tell you how well it works with it.
Lavikka Photography Thanks! One of my favorite features. :(
Robert Budafai I doubt its the lens. Just trying to look through the evf gives me eye strain. I'm guessing the lens works the way it should.
Lavikka Photography I tested the eye focus a little further and it only works in the zone focus area and in my opinion not that well. So you may not like it for that. Technically it doesn't work eye focus start either.
Lavikka Photography Thanks David!
Thank you for your video. I just got my Sony a6000 and was looking for an extra lens. I thInk this may be it.
i just scored this lens like new on ebay for 125 bucks, now have the 19, 30 and 60 they are great lenses.
Does the Sigma 19mm, or 30mm equal to the Sigma 60mm, in sharpness? thanks for the video.
+Larry Russell No. the 19mm is the softest but still good 30 is better but the 60mm is the sharpest lens for the a6000.
I just purchased the Sigma 60mm. Can you use eye autofocus with this lens? Also, are there any adjustments I need to make to my a6000 for this lens?
Yes you can use eye focusing with it. No adjustments. I prefer to shoot on AF-C with a flexible spot set on medium.
Many Thanks to You. Grand Merci from Morocco (North Africa)
How does this compare with the Sony 50mm f1.8 lens ? Thanks.
Ben W There are so many. The sigma 19mm and 60mm DN lenses work well together. Sony 35mm oss 1.8 is also decent. Along with the Sony 20mm pancake.
Its not wide at all. more if a portrait lens.
Lavikka Photography this or the Sigma 30 2.8 for portrait type work? Sorry, maybe a dumb question but I'm a noob that just switched to Sony (loving it btw). I loved my old Canon 50 1.8 would like something comparable...thought?
The 60 is good portrait lens. and yes the 30 would be if you used the 50mm on full frame.
Great thanks! I was just using an old crop sensor rebel. I think I go with the 60.
What should I get for some macro photos? Any ideas ?
Awesome review, planning to go buy this as my first non-kit lens to my alpha 6000. :)
that double cab though! I have a 67 bug, and wanting to sell my a900 to jump into the a6000, but not sure if I should put off to see if a newer model is going to be released
Its a 71 transporter. Look like death but runs like a beast. If they release a new version then it will show up at the end of March.
Definitely the Sigma line. The Sony 20mm pancake is also good. The review on the 30 comes out next week and the 19 just after the new year.
Lavikka Photography So in terms of Sigma 30 and Sony 35mm...your vote is to 30mm. right? Also is the combo right?
Srishti Khandelwal They are both good but in different ways. The review on the 30mm will be up at the end of the week. Watch my review on the 35mm OSS 1.8 or were you looking at the Sony 30mm F3.5 macro?
Davin Lavikka @ Lavikka Photography
I already have the Sony 50mm f/1.8 OSS, so I'm not sure if I should buy this lens.
Pretty close focal range (Sigma 60mm vs Sony 50mm), but the Sony is faster and has OSS.
Also, from f/2.8 onwards, the Sony is almost as sharp as the Sigma.
What do you think?
If you already have the 50 then I would stick with it.
Hello . Just purchased the SonyA600 and looking to upgrade from the kit lens(16-50) . Looking at the Sigma 30mm f2.8 and the 60 . Which would you go with if just going with one(and already had the kit lens) cheers
+Darrin D Probably the 30mm. More versatile. Ideally though get the 60mm and the 19mm.
+Lavikka Photography Thank you very much . I actually have the 19mm on my wish list . I was thinking the 30mm and the 19mm later (I currently have the kit 16-50mm and the 55-210mm) Obviously I'm green as grass at this .
cheers
My copy already got 4 micro dusts inside front element. Although the dusts seems to not reduce the image quality. Does your copy fine?
Mine has two specs. but it doesn't affect anything.
Hey... Thks for this video! I just bought this lens for my Sony A6000. I confirm : low price and hight quality 👍
I own a Canon 50mm 1.8, which i use with the G7. Would this Sigma be better than my Canon?
Looking for an advice! i just bought a6000 body and this lense as my first choice (base on all the good reviews I saw). But it feels like I need another lense - I just hate the fact that this lense is not very universal. What should be my second choice lense? I'm looking for a relatively inexpensive option, and I would like to be able to shoot in different situations. I'm really after quality but my budget is limited. .. Thank you so much for your advice.
+Svitlana Vodyanyk The Sony 28mm F2 or the Sigma 19mm f2.8 art.
(love your reviews, keep 'em coming)
the 28mm f2 has less vignetting and sharper edges.
Nice review but I cannot decide whether to buy a Sigma 60mm or 300 F2.8DN lens for my A6000. whats your recommendation.
I'd like an a6000 but can't afford, would you reccomend the a5000 with this lens? image quality won't be much different between a5000 and a6000 right? thanks
They are about the same. Yes the 60 will work.
Hi,
Nice explanation in better approach.
Thank you
The 30mm f1.4 should be fine. Change the auto focus setting to afc - Continuous AF.
You should also know there is a slight delay when the shutter button is pressed to when the shutter fires.
Thank for your response.. I will try your suggestion..
Thank you very much..
Thanks as always brother. Would you recommend this for street and night or something different for the A6000? Thanks in advance.
So this or the Sony 50mm 1.8 for portraits?
The 30 will be a little wider and easier to frame but the Sigma 60mm is a stupid sharp lens!
Ok, so you suggest this over sony 50mm ?
definitely
Thinking about this for my Nex-3. Is the lack of OSS a dealbreaker? I'm used to shooting with OSS with the SEL35f18 and kit lens.
Would this lens be Better to use for beauty videos compared to the 50mm f1.8? With my beauty videos I would be zooming in a lot and I do prefer a blurry background while I do so.
It's not a zoom.
How did you get the portraits to look this sharp? I have a a6000 using the kit lens and most of the pictures just came out looking flat or blurry.
+usiruk Simple. Ditch the kit lens and turn DRO off in the menu.
+usiruk I hope it is half as good as claimed, I just bought one.
Can you use Eye F with this lens. I have been told that you cannot. Eye AF is very important to me...
It should work but only on newer body a6500.
Marc Cretten I think it would be a little tight. A little wider like the 30mm might be better.
New subscriber question for you. Do you know if the Eye AF detection works with this lens? My understanding is that it's a contrast-based system and it would... like on the Sony RX100 mark iv.
+John_M Yes it does but only in M, A P modes
should i buy rokinon 85mm or sigma 60mm, i mostly use it for photography and now i'm totally confused because both lens performs pretty well.
The Sigma is sharper with less CA's
Is there some significant difference from the Sigma 50mm 2.8 and the 60mm besides the focal length?
+Coi Lemard Sigma doesn't make a 50mm f2.8 for sony e.
Lavikka Photography Oh 😢 Thank you.
