I completely agree with you, the original is my favourite (popular) Christmas song ever, and I'm VERY critical about the covers, but this was FANTASTIC! It's the best cover of this song I have ever heard. I don't like when people change lyrics because they feel "inappropriate", but let's face it- The f-word in this day and age is as equally controversial as the n-word (and just as insulting), so I guess they have found solution which will not offend anyone, but also keep the spirit of the original. Amazing! Edit: check out the original Christmas song he did with his niece yesterday, it was composed by Tommy and his brother in law, Kim Arvidsson (he was singing with Tommy on that Bryan Adams cover). It's in Swedish, but it's an amazing song and his niece is too cute
I'd say in the original, all the F word accomplishes is insulting gay people by trying to use them as an insult. Only a homophobe would be offended by the idea of being gay. The purpose of that verse was to have the two singers insulting each other though, not insulting a completely unrelated minority group, so I think these new lyrics work better (but I'd prefer they change both lines to find something better that rhymes properly)

gotta be honest... it's okay (I've changed this like three times, because I don't necessarily dislike this, but would anyone care if it weren't for the original?). I feel like everything that makes the Pogues version so magical is missing. There's so much story telling that's done through Shane and Katie's voices and we get none of that. The composition of the music is amazing, the vocals are great, it's just missing that thing that moves the needle from "good song" to brilliant. Exactly how I feel listening to the Pentatonix Sound of Silence cover vs Disturbed's version.. there's just something that gets completely lost in translation that I can't really define. Edit: I think I've got it... it's the difference between "Epic" and "great for TH-cam". Taking a powerful emotional ride and boiling it down to just lyrics and music
