    The high performance big block closed chambered heads was 11 to 1 pistons and the L88 first design was upped to 11.5 to 1 pistons and the second design open chambered oval port aluminum heads had the 12.5 to 1 pistons. I lived and raced this period with the baby big block the 1965 Corvette 396 c.i., closed chambered iron square port heads that was rebuilt 30/over 13 to 1 pistons and a full race cam with upgraded valve springs. It never was put on a dyno, but the machine shop/speed shop estimated it should have been around 650 hp. It pushed my 1972 split bumper SS/RS Camero, (yellow & looked good), like it was that much hp. I had the M22 four speed that was going to replace the STOCK Turbo 350 that was starting to slip from foot braking that much hp, then my brother totaled the car when it was T-boned. Then I got married with children that made me store the engine until 2004 when I sold it to a guy that needed it for his 1965 Corvette restoration, with the months and weeks stamped or molded so it perfectly fit his Vette's body build date. I kinda wondered if that engine I bought actually came from that car. Be safe and healthy while having a good day.

    Very nice build! I am always intrigued with 427 builds. You don’t hear much about them anymore even though years back that was the king of Chevy engines. Always wanted to build one with modern afr oval port heads and a solid roller with a tunnel ram for a street strip car with a manual trans! Fun I bet!

    I had a 2nd design L88, 1969 model w/ .560" x .580" factory cam? (sorry, I measured and not sure it was right), with the 850 holley best of 10.82, at 123.w/ 11.5x28 x 15.
    2x 660 center squirters on a Wiend tunnel ram on it and it ran 9.82 at 139 with Blairs Steve B. tuning it. (I couldn't get it to run but 11.3's). Those engines were the bomb!!!!!(not legal for anything short of C/gas)

    Man that motor really makes some good power I sure wish my 427 would make that kind of power I know I'm not running near enough cam shaft to make any real power it's a howards hydraulic roller 235 x 241 @50 618 lift on a 108 lsa I do have a good set of AFR 265 oval port heads and my compression is around 10.5 to 1 the motor has not been on the dybo yet I was hoping for 550 hp but I'm sure with that cam I'll be lucky to make 500 hp. I love your videos

    Is there a benefit for a longer rod for the 3.76 crank or is it more for reducing piston weight? Also is there a secret for making solid rollers live on the street these days? Seems like not long ago there was lots of solid roller failures. Thanks for your time and great videos!

    • @VORTECPRO
      @VORTECPRO  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Ok- 590/447=1.32 TQ per inch, 660/496=1.33 so as you can see its not a crazy number, then theres were intake valve closes, and the dual plane intake.

    From what I've heard about you, I consider you to be an expert head porter, and engine builder. Do you get a chance to cc the intake ports on those heads after you finished the port work? I'm just curious what the final total volume of the intake ports is. I realize that the contours and shapes of the ports are more important than the actual volume. But I'm just curious.

  • @andysteele4056
    @andysteele4056 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have questions on valve size. First why 1.80 and not 1.88, was it because of the head damage or is there a performance gain from the smaller size? Also, your 049/781 usually get 2.190 intake valves and not 2.250. Is that because there isn't enough cross section in the port to make use of that much valve?

    • @VORTECPRO
      @VORTECPRO  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      1.800 was used to keep the valve away from the chamber. Factory bowl is to big for a 2.190 valve.

      I have a real L-88 over the counter short block crate engine, has the CE stamping on the front pad. I also have a pair of 074 aluminum open chamber heads, both were purchased from Chevrolet in the mid seventies. I raced the 427 in my 68 Camaro for about 5 or 6 years and then switched to a LS-7 454. The L-88 block has no wear at all and the cross hatch is still visible on the cylinders.
