  • EASA Certification Process Nearly Complete…
The Rotax 915 iS engine has been in the pipeline for some time, but now the engine is nearly ready to get flying.
Marc Becker, Aircraft Business Manager for Rotax, told ANN editor Tom Patton at AirVenture that the company is nearly finished with the EASA certification process, but there is still some testing to be done.
According to the company website, the Rotax 915 iS offers more power, the best power-to-weight ratio in its class, full take-off power up to at least 15,000 feet and a service ceiling of 23,000 feet.
The Rotax 915 iS aircraft engine has already been flown more than 250 hours in real mode and further 10,000 hours on test benches. In August 2016, selected Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) received the first Rotax 915 iS prototype engines to be installed into their airplanes. Currently more than 40 Design-Ins are in progress, and some were installed in aircraft on the field at AirVenture.
The certification process will be started second quarter of 2017. Serial production of the Rotax 915 iS aircraft engine is still on schedule and is planned to begin by the end of this year, Becker said.

Guys if you have an old plane and want to upgrade for less than $40k it's not a bad deal. Have to look at it that way, opens up aviation to far more people which is also a double edged sword

The fuel consumption will depend on the installation. At 5000 rpm and 81kW power, the engine uses 4.6 gallons per hour of avgas, according to test data.

    • @TheJustinJ
      @TheJustinJ ปีที่แล้ว

      81kw is 81,000w / 745.7 per HP is 108.623 HP.
      4.6 US Gallons Avgas x 6.02lb/gal = 27.692 lb/hr fuel.
      27.692/108.623 = 0.255lb/hp/hr. BSFC.
0.255 BSFC is not even remotely possible.
Anything under 0.3 is highly questionable. 0.37 is a thermodynamic efficiency of 36% and considered state of the art in the 2020's.
      And

My new engine cant burn any fuel Rotax has two service bulletins in 2019 concerning fuel pumps last one in Oct 2019. This one is for replacement of fuel pumps. Guess what people Rotax can't deliver fuel pumps until Dec. 17th 2019. So over two moths of down time on a new engine and aircraft can't fly will it ever fly with a ROTAX engine???

914 is very common in gyrocopters. However, the 91x series isn't designed for the vertical crankshaft mount used in most conventional piston engine helicopters.

The power will not matter this engine has been plagued with service bulletins. I purchased a new unit in Oct. 2019 in Italy. I was not informed of any service bulletins at time of purchase. Was informed of one concerning exhausts values that was resolved already. Now two very important bulletins, fuel pumps both service bulletins involve fuel pumps. One came out Oct 10th. 2019 the replacement of fuel pumps effects 915IS by serial numbers. This service bulletin looks like about 4000 units are effected. I tried email to Rotax explain I just purchased a unit CASH. That I needed to know what the problem was since my 915 IS has never flown. People why a service bulletin for fuel pumps 5 month earlier. Why did Rotax continue to sell these engines to the public with defective parts a lot of why's? They had a response of join owner page NO ANSWER to my question about the pumps. I WOULD SUGGEST DO NOT BUY THIS ROTAX ENGINE AT ALL FOR FEW YEARS. MAYBE NEVER. My plane continues to sit new unable to fly or ship from Magni. Rotax I may now understand why they call your engine lawn mower engines. Problems, problems right out of the crate. More to come I am sure, anyone with serial numbers from the first bulletin effecting fuel pumps in the 915 IS in March 2019 contact me.

Dude, this is a turbo charged, fuel injected, 135hp engine that will weigh about the same or LESS than an O-200. It was NEVER EVER meant for the average person. Used lycomings/contenentals and auto conversions like the corvair and the VW were meant for the average person. Not this. Heck, to take full advantage of the turbo, you really need a constant speed prop, which probably adds another $10K to the price.
This was meant for guys that think building a $130K+ Sling 4 kit is a steel because it is less than 1/4th of the cost of a Cirrus. I am scratch building a Sonex in my basement, but I have a friend who is planning on $200K+ to do the Glasair Sportsman two weeks to taxi program this year. This engine is targeting people with his pocketbook, not average folks like you or I.

There's still the Rotax 912 ULS for the rest of us for $18K. Yes it's more expensive, but it runs on regular gas station fuel, ethanol blended and all. In my home airport, Avgas is almost $5.80, premium fuel from gas station across from the airport is $2.80. In only 600 flying hours, Rotax pays for itself. If you ever land at KCMI, hit me up and I'll show you the plane and fuel trailer.

approxm. 90% of light sport aviation in germany fly with a rotax 912/914 - and 50,000 units 912/914 was sold between 1989 and 2015. rotax himselfe named ~ ~ ~ 45millions of flight hours for this series... and the predator was using this - the use in the army/airforce is allways a good indicator for reliability.
according to my flightbook my ass was hanging ~ 320 hours and nearly 600 takeoff and landings behind a 912/914 in the last 10 years... i trust them.

Volume of engine sales. They are about 7% of the Rotax sales base. There is literally 15-20 guys in the whole factory building these engines. Trust me if you could make an engine like this for $12k you clean up the market. Your welcome to do that and make millions if you like.

Because they can sell as many as they can make at that price, so there’s no need to reduce the price
