  • As we are heading towards a New Year, it is an exciting time for couturiers Rimple & Harpreet Narula - they're making their big Bollywood debut with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmavati.
    The designer duo has been styling B-town's leading ladies like Anushka Sharma, Sonakshi Sinha, Kangana Ranaut, Jacqueline Fernandez and many more. But, this is the very first time they are foraying into costume designing for the leading cast of the magnum opus film Padmavati starring Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh.
    Pinkvilla exclusively caught up with the designer duo and asked them to spill all about the making of the costumes of Padmavati. From working with Sanjay Leela Bhansali, styling Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor, inspiration and research behind the costume pieces to standout pieces in the movie, visions for the costumes in the film, the heaviest or the most difficult costume and more, here is what the duo have to say about designing costumes for SLB's most awaited magnum opus - Padmavati!

      Men's fashion was always equally important as women's . Infact in past "fashion" used to reflect social norms and structure at that time. A very significant part of society.
      However over time fashion somehow become something that is associated with women only.

    Honestly, modern Indian fashion is so watered down by western influences. These are the facets of Indian history which I feel need to be unearthed and brought to the public to remind us of our past selves.

      Because these clothes can’t be used everyday.benefit with western wear is comfort and easy to handle.It’s easy to go to office in a jeans than wearing a saree.That’s why these cloths are used only in marriage functions.

    Rimple & Harpreet ! Excellent Job ! I don't know if the Film gets accolades for its content or not ! But it should get an applause for its costumes, the costumes really stand out and look astonishing especially Allaudin Khilji's Costume of course his make up also plays a role is just perfect. Just looks like a Islamic Ruler from Medieval Times ! Well Done !

    I love the look and feel of ethnic clothes, even though I don't wear them often myself. With fashion trends changing almost everyday, it's good to see clothes embodying our rich history and culture. Projects like this help bring the old techniques and craftsmanship to the people to appreciate and prevent them from becoming obscure. I hope the costumes help start new trends in the wedding market, thus helping keep these old techniques alive.

    No doubt these are beyond gorgeous.. I love full circle skirts n u can see the volume in here.. it gives volume n flexibility of movement too. But Khiljis clothing about the big fur cape he has on.. is questionable.. in rajasthan where its hot temperature, wearing thick fur over shoulders is highly unlikely.. and turks dont really wear so dark colours even for a sultan like 600 yrs ago. For a turk wouldn't he wear completely something else from Indian wear??

      One thing people tend to ignore is that Khiljis were Turks but they were not much steppe Nomadic much like Mongols whom Allaudin Khilji fought all his life to save Delhi Sultanate. They had influences from Central Asia from Kazakhstan to Afghanistan but they were highly Persianized. And adopted some Afghan and Indian culture too. They werent Barbarians but were the richest and most powerful kingdom of their time being patrons of Art, Architecture and culture. His clothing was supposed to be more of Persianized than Nomadic.

    It's really nice to see so much hard work going in for the costume, these two are clearly educated and know how to market their dresses well.. but sometimes it's not enough, especially when making costumes representing a culture. I am at a loss for words seeing they covered Deepika's waist digitally, wondering why this went amiss in the costumes since Rajput's protested their 'Queen's' never showed their waists..To think this is clear hypocrisy I researched on Google and watched Rajput's dances, their cultures and music and to be honest, most or all of the dresses donned by Rajput women had their waists covered even in today's times. Not saying this is wrong but clearly if this was representative of the culture, I am wondering why the Director agreed for the costume that seemed to have caused such a mass outrage to the point that they had to digitally alter the cloth... At first I was angry that such a small thing is made into such a big issue... We see Indian women's waists showing when they wear sarees, why such a big deal in that for a BOLLYWOOD song then? But clearly there is a lot more than that.. Kudos to the designers nevertheless for such amazing outfits, but I guess living in a country with so many cultures and keeping them in harmony I guess we have to step up a notch when it comes to proper research and people's sentiments attached with it.

    I wasted 17.11 mins in watching this video only to realise that they haven't done any research by themselves and don't even remember the regions from where they took cues for designing. They just blabbered whatever they have been told by their assistants and kept on repeating the same thing in the entire video.
    Pinkvilla's video on Padmaavat jewellery is much more informative than this.

    Ignorant American gal here: How period-accurate are the costumes for 13th-century northern India (I think?) and the future Sri Lanka? With films set in 13th-century Europe, I can guesstimate the period authenticity of the costumes and armor fairly well, but I know far less about Indian clothing of the same period.

    • @smollilbean

    • @DOSBoxMom
      @DOSBoxMom 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@smollilbean Because the queen is the daughter of the Sinhalese (may be botching the spelling of that) king. Early in the film, the young Rajput king goes there to obtain some pearls, and is wounded in a hunting accident by the Sinhalese princess, who nurses him back to health and eventually marries him.

    • @smollilbean
      @smollilbean 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DOSBoxMom I know about the queen being of sinhalese origin, but apart from that has nothing in common with srilanka in my opinion ( considering this movie atleast) The dresses the queen and women wore are called Rajputi poshaks, and so it has everything traditional Rajasthani, including the jewellery and dresses. Rajputi poshaks and lehenga choli/turbans are not worn in srilanka (infact, Rajputi poshaks are only worn in Rajasthan, not any other parts of northern india, let alone srilanka) Srilankans wear sarees.

      here you are actually disrespecting the wonderful artisans of our country who have put together these outfits. You cannot compare there craftsmanship to all the machine work done in Chandini Chowk! Come on!

    Why did you use cheap foil borders like a 90’s bridal dupatta? Looked so cheap! Shahid looked better dressed than Deepika.
    You tried to copy Bajirao but you can’t beat Bajirao. Sorry but fail.
