You didn't get that as much in SWT days. The 158s being kept for the Salisbury to Southampton route.

One of my old haunts. Spent many a happy hour there in the 70s and 80s. The days when you could buy a platform ticket.
Surbiton featured in Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.
Lovely artdeco station building, and a listed structure. It's from Surbiton that the term suburbs came from.
The mainline should have gone via Kingston, but as was common in those days not all land owners saw the railways as good thing. So it went through what is now Surbiton.
Surbiton has an odd three track layout between platforms 2 and 3.
The down fast has the clear centre road, yet the London bound up fast goes past platform 2. Most stopping London bound services call at platform 1.
I remember the days of the 33s, 50s and 47s on the Waterloo - Salisbury/Exeter services plus the loco hauled boat trains with 73s and 74s. There also used to be a fair number newspaper, mail, and parcel trains.
The 33s snd 50s sounded great heading away from London on their approach to Surbiton as the noise bounced off the cutting.
    There was also a great variety of EMU stock. 4VEP, 4CEP, 4CIG, 4BIG, 4REP, 4TC, 4EPB, 2EPB, HAP, SAP, SUB, prototype PEP, 4 car 508.
The next station along towards London, Berrylands, which is served by the half hourly Hampton Court services had the local nickname of Smellylands, as there was a sewage treatment works nearby.
Got be one of the only routes where the express sprinters 158/9 are regularly seen in 8, 9, or 10 car formations.
Your footage at 9.47 of the 456-455-455 coming into platform 3 for the Woking stopper clearly shows the ex 508 trailer in the 455/7 formation.

Yes. While it's a still a busy and interesting route, it's not a patch on what it was like back then.
Clapham Junction was interesting to. Lots of inter regional freight with Peaks, 47s etc and the sidings at Clapham were used for bogie vans off mail and parcels traffic plus the loco hauled stock. There was usually an 09 on the go moving stock, along with empty rolling stock movements.
