    You are a treasure. The Portuguese government should pay you. Your affection for the Algarve and for all things Portuguese is obvious. It might be nice to hear how the pandemic has affected schools in Portugal. In my city in Canada, the schools opened in September closed around Christmas time and reopened three weeks ago. I am a bit biased but the reopening has been a disaster with Covid case counts rising rapidly. Hopefully the vaccine roll-out will mean the schools in Portugal should return to normal soon. Thanks for the information, Nick.

    Ha! Hey, Nick. You scrub up quite well. Nicely researched video, that (thanks to your daughter 😃). I used to teach EFL at a private language school in Lisbon, and for a while, Portuguese English teachers were quite wary of us, but they started coming in for 'training' sessions. Soon after, state schools would have 'English weeks' and we'd be invited in to do some fun classes with up to 100 kids at a time. Timetabling was always a weird one when I was there, with kids having lessons from 8am till 7pm with loads of gaps in between.

    you also have et in the third cycle
    not all schools are in agrupamentos,you have "escolas não agrupadas"(public or private).
    And explicações are extralessons and not all the extralessons are in atl's,they can be done privatly on a extralesson teacher's house that you pay monthly to.
    you're welcome and hope that you have a great life in Algarve!☀️🥰

    Ahahah... Very funny! 😁
    Notes:
    About the classes, they must have 28 students (maximum). This number can be reduced (I think is to 21, I don't remember at the moment) in the case of there is 1 until 4 (max) students with special needs. For example, if there is one student with dyslexia in one class, the class can't have more than 21 students.
    About the subjects, that you had doubt, I can say:
    EV - basically they learn everything related with drawing.
    E Technological - they learn about different sort of materials and build things with them (could be closer to architecture, more or less)
    TIC - here basically they learn how to use a computer, how the computer works or is built, and about the Internet and some software.
    ...
    Instead of "professor de turma" we call "director de turma".
    Great job, your preparation, teacher! 👌😁

Not everyone can immediately afford an international school where English is predominantly the main language of instruction.
    .. how do they integrate, overcome the language barrier to be able to learn and carry on with their schooling ..is this language barrier element facilitated with so much immigration happening over these recent years. - Do all kids go to the "study centers" after school?
    - Is it really voluntary and just extracurricular activities and doing homework or do they easily fall behind if they don´t attend during the school terms or the long summer break? (I am asking this, because this is the case in some countries, especially in Asia...)

    • @arturjcrebelo3275
      @arturjcrebelo3275 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Gina dont be afraid to put him in a public Portuguese school for free. Because the school need to obey the Portuguese law. All the subjects that are teach in Portuguese need to be teach in English to your kid, and they going to give him a lot of Portuguese extra classes to help your kid. I know one kid in my niece school (my sister belong to the parents board) that after 3 months he was fluent in Portuguese because they give him a lot of extra classes, he end the normal school at 18:00, he after one year was in normal portuguese classes, without any dificulty and was in 7th grade.
      The law is call PLNM (need to ask in the beginning of the year to put your kid inside this law) and the school need to obey this law.
      Normally in any municipality they have only one class for year for native English speakers kids, every Portuguese kid go to the closest school, but a native English kid need to go to the school where there are this especial classes (normally the central School of Agrupamento), if is more than 5km from your home they pay the transportation. And they for some time until the Portuguese level of the kid is very good, dont going to assess (with negative grades) your kid in the Portuguese subject.
      But i understand why is better to put him in a private international school because he have only 2 years left to end high school. But my advice is for kids until 8th/9th grade (14 years old) is better to put him in a Portuguese public or private school, both private Portuguese or public need to comply the PLNM law.

      @@arturjcrebelo3275 Thank-you so much Artur. Very helpful and I just wish we could get to Portugal sooner so that he could start in 8th grade. We are already learning the language (slowly but diligently) so hopefully it will make it easier when we do move!
      Appreciate the links too - I will certainly look into this.

    Aaagh, this is such a corny intro! heheh. Regarding GOVERNMENT/Public schools helping foreign kids with Portuguese --> Try and make head or tail of this www.dge.mec.pt/portugues-lingua-nao-materna It's the Portuguese plan for kids who don't speak English. If you know what an "Agrupumento" is go and see them in your area and quiz them about PLNM (that link above), however the best thing is to get your kids learning Portuguese online before they arrive and possibly private extra tuition when they're here. They'll learn super fast.

    One thing that i want to ask. Do goverment schools in portugal have outdoor football obligatory

    • @AlgarveAddicts
      @AlgarveAddicts  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It appears to me that no sport (apart from a weekly session of physical education) is compulsory. Each town has one (or more!) football clubs.

    Does Portugal have middle schools? If so, what grades are they?

    • @AlgarveAddicts
      @AlgarveAddicts  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Chatgpt said it better than I can: In Portugal, the educational system does not have a specific "middle school" stage like in the U.S. Instead, the system is divided as follows:
      1. First Cycle (1º Ciclo): Grades 1-4, ages 6-10
      2. Second Cycle (2º Ciclo): Grades 5-6, ages 10-12
      3. Third Cycle (3º Ciclo): Grades 7-9, ages 12-15
      4. Secondary Education (Ensino Secundário): Grades 10-12, ages 15-18
      The second and third cycles of basic education in Portugal are somewhat equivalent to what middle school is in other countries, but it's all part of basic education rather than a separate school stage.

      There are a law in Portugal PLNM. Dont be afraid to put your kid in a public school. They going to help your kid in any way possible to help him. I used to work in a secondary school and for my experience all the kids from England (or native English speakers countries, except India) learn fluent Portuguese in 3 month in a public school. I know that the kid in a portuguese school learn Portuguese way faster than in any international school.
      Read this pdf from the Portuguese Minister of Education.
      www.dge.mec.pt/sites/default/files/Curriculo/EBasico/PLNM/portuguese_second_language_pl2_plnm_general_information_en.pdf.pdf
      They going to give lots of extra portuguese classes to your kid and all the other subjects/classes going to be in English.
      There is only one little problem is that this classes (In English) going to be taught at the headquarter school grouping (Sede do Agrupamento), normally this schools is in a municipality town. All Portuguese kids go to the closest school of their house, your kid to attend this classes in English and have lots of extra Portuguese classes, need to go to the school inside the municipality town.

    Omg perfect timing! We have just started our process in researching schools. Each of your videos is making us think maybe we should move to the Algarve lol! Questions: For after school and summer activities, what are the average costs of each program? Also how did you pick a school for your daughter? I feel like I toured tons of school here in the US but I don’t think I will have that option before we move this summer to Portugal.

      Hi T. The government picks your school for you, based on your location. Regarding extra lessons, they vary massively in cost. Any where from €30-€100 per month.

      My niece pay for extra time after school (ATL - Atividades Tempos Livres) 35€/month. It's from 7am to 9am and from 4pm to 7pm (this help a lot parents that work a lot of hours or crazy hours).
      A summer camp (in Summer holidays) can cost (the months they dont have school, last week of June, July and 2 weeks in September (25€/week), but they do lots of activities, they have 2 weeks they go to a nearest beach (in the morning), after lunch they go visit museums, they even go learn to swing, have dance, painting and theater with professional teachers. In Odivelas 3 years ago the kids prepare a song to sing in retired home (to bring some happiness to old ppl that live there) like a voluntary thing.
      NOTE: This prices and experiences is from a School in Odivelas (City very near of Lisbon). Every "Agrupamento" have their own activities. Need to ask the schools the kind of activities they have.
      Karaté/Dance cost extra 20€/month adding the 25€/week and was 1 hour (every day in summer holidays). Some kids start doing Karaté after end the summer because they like the classes and doing this activity in summer.
