Penny Lancaster tells The News Desk about her personal experience and why she is campaigning for women to get better access to Hormone Replacement Therapy.
Women are having to deal with a shortage in hormone replacement therapy (HRT) supplies amid rising demand for such treatment.
- What is HRT?
The NHS says HRT is a treatment to relieve symptoms by replacing hormones that are at a lower level as women approach the menopause.
HRT can help relieve most menopausal symptoms, including hot flushes, night sweats, mood swings, vaginal dryness and reduced sex drive.
- What is the current situation with supply?
The Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) said prescriptions for HRT have more than doubled in England over the past five years, from 238,000 in January 2017 to almost 538,000 in December 2021.
The Department of Health (DH) said demand for HRT has dramatically risen, with a 38% increase in the number of prescription items over the last seven years.
- What is the reason for such an increase in demand?
The DH said there is greater awareness around the menopause and more confidence among GPs in prescribing HRT.
- What has been the consequence of this higher demand?
Acute shortages have reportedly caused women to share prescriptions, with some said to be made suicidal by the debilitating menopause symptoms they suffer without the medication.
The DH said while most of the 70 HRT products available in the UK remain in good supply, a range of factors including an increase in demand has led to shortages of a limited number of products including Oestrogel.
- What is the Government doing about it?
At the end of April, the Government announced that Vaccine Taskforce director general Madelaine McTernan had been appointed to spearhead a new HRT Supply Taskforce.
Her role will involve identifying ways to support the HRT supply chain and address shortages some women face on a limited number of products, the DH said.

Should the government make HRT more readily available?
No, the government should give lessons to menopausal women in the subject of domestic violence as a perpetrator!
No, for 000's of years women didn't have HRT and got through menopause. I tried HRT and hated the side-effects so gave it up & went through it. Grow up ladies!

I met a woman this week that had breast cancer from HRT, women don't realise the extra harm they're causing their bodies by taking HRT.

I was put on HRT I didn’t last 2 weeks. If I wasn’t sobbing uncontrollably I was ready to rip people’s throats out and ask questions later. My husband, family, friends and co workers didn’t know if they were going to get Jeckell or Hyde on any certain day.

Ladies you don’t need HRT. Instead use a Sea Kelp supplement which is rich is Iodine.
Low Iodine is the cause of hormone imbalances.

Iodine doesnt give the hormones back...our menopause bodies doesnt make estrogen anymore...if you take iodine we dont suddenly make estrogen...the estrogen doesnt come back unless you take hormones...when the estrogen is gone we get irritable ,hot flashes,dry skin,etc etc etc

You should be pissed that men pretending to be women are taking away women’s menopause treatment, leaving them open to heart attack, stroke and dementia.
