I love how the crowd are just like “yeah, this is the new REM song. It’s really cool!” and little do they know it will go on to be one of the greatest songs of all time.

This song is a great example of something that hits huge & u dont know why. Like a phenomenon , right place right time something u cant put ur finger on. R.e.m. had college radio success & a huge cult following . Then this song was 5 min long ( most commercial hits are under 4 min ) theirs no chorus & it has a mandolin. This song blew up. From feb 91 to Sept 91 it played over & over . It's a great song but it was shocking the public took to it so much. The video as well won like 6 mtv awards & was def not the mtv kind of video. They capped their year of with 4 Grammys. Imagine kicking around busting ur butt for 10 years then u finally decide no promotion ( no tour) after touring every album. To me a song like this is something In the stars.
Impressive how he delves into his interpretation!!! You live the song, you feel it to such an extent that it touches your soul in every verse, in your heart.😊
Perhaps their best performance and one of the earliest. The instruments and lyrics flow together perfectly. A young Michael Stipe sings with emotion, which you can see in all his body motions. A unique sound, and much different than their other songs, though they do still play with rhymes, as did Nirvana.
Unfortunately idk for what reason but I notice a trend with bands when they perform early in their career back in the day they have to lip sync the whole thing. This is literally just the song playing and he isnt really singing. Not denying his singing capability but thought it would be worth mentioning.
An amazingly innovative piece for of songwriting. It builds and builds, creating tension that will resolve from minor to major in a chorus that, alas, never comes.
@@jaylinn7763 - I was wondering about this too. I found this on a music site: "But “Losing My Religion” doesn’t use a chorus. It’s a verse-only structure. In many, maybe even most, songs that don’t use a chorus, they usually use a refrain, but this song barely does that." So it may be that the part you quoted is more of a refrain, which I guess is shorter than a chorus. I am not sure but I think this is the difference between a chorus and a refrain.

A great period for the band (riding high with the classic album Out of Time). It's nearly 30 years old but hasn't dated at all (full of brilliant gems).
This live rendition has to be the best live version, it sounds exactly like the music video. I LOVE HOW HONEST THEY ARE WITH THEIR SOUND. NO AUTOTUNE BABY.
@@ZedwardHD Stipe always changes how he sings songs live, very rarely does his vocals sound exactly like the original recording. But this is most definitely lip synced, you can tell it’s pre-recorded by the strings that magically appear despite no cellos or anything are being played on stage.
A great song to preserve -- as my favorite smartphone ringtone. Remembering those 1990s when the internet, TH-cam & ChatGPT were mysterious entities. 😊 Especially TikTok.

@@ReelinInTheYears66 being familiar with the song it's obvious to me that it's lip synced. But I'm amazed at how closely Stipe is syncing it. The other question I have is why they took the trouble to have an extra guitarist, not a regular band member, when it's being lip synced?
His voice was always wonderful but it got better and better, he got better and better looking and a great showman, he must look back and be very very proud of what he achieved and his family must be so proud of this, lovely man
In some shows they had to lip sync. Some of the greatest bands had to lip-sync live because they had too!! Queen, one of the best live rock bands ever did it as well and hated it. So give applause to this band. Lip-syncing happened
Talk Talk used to intentionally fuck up or make it VERY obvious when they were forced to lipsync for TV (synths on show with nothing plugged in, bassist plucking along on a guitar instead of his bass, very overdone "playing" in general etc). They could play live and it sounded absolutely awesome (look up Talk Talk Montreux 1986) and they saw forcing them to lipsync as an insult and treated the performance accordingly :D

I do love this song but it's bitter sweet, as it's meant to be. Not that I lost a lover but a brother in arms in the First Gulf War.
May be the greatest song of all time.
A masterwork for sure

Michael Stipe is without question the most beautiful man I have ever seen.
Oh life is bigger
It's bigger than you
And you are not me
The lengths that I will go to
The distance in your eyes
Oh no I've said too much
I set it up
That's me in the corner
That's me in the spot-light
Losing my religion
Trying to keep up with you
And I don't know if I can do it
Oh no I've said too much
I haven't said enough
I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try
Every whisper, of every waking hour
I'm choosing my confessions
Trying to keep an eye on you
Like a hurt, lost and blinded fool, fool
Oh no I've said too much
I set it up
Consider this
Consider this the hint of the century
Consider this the slip
That brought me to my knees, failed
What if all these fantasies come
Flailing around
Now I've said too much
I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try
But that was just a dream
That was just a dream
That's me in the corner
That's me in the spot-light
Losing my religion
Trying to keep up with you
And I don't know if I can do it
Oh no I've said too much
I haven't said enough
I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try
But that was just a dream
Try, cry, fly, try
That was just a dream
Just a dream
Just a dream, dream
