cutting these crystals into different shapes should be considered a crime. it's mind blowing how they form in nature
Definitely pyrite crystals are very beautifull. The cutting material is only the one with very small crystals which makes up for 95% of the existing crystals and is mined by the tons and sold by containers. The bigger crystals indeed are too beautifull to be cut. However sometimes you just have a beautifull crystal face on one side of a rather dull pyrite block. In such cases giving the stone a shape while maintaining the crystal face can enhance the natural beauty greatly.

Can certain types of pyrite be non-magnetized.
Hi Raymond, interesting question. First of all, pyrite is NOT (really) magnetic. Pyrite is a compound of iron and sulfur and as the sulfur electons are moving in a different direction than the iron electrones, any magnetic forces of the iron part are basically neutralized. Having said that, scientifically pyrite is graded as being very weakly magnetic (meaning it retains a very tiny nearly not measurable magnetism). There is a bunch of research on enhancing this magnetism though for industrial separation of pyrite from coal. Read for example: Xi-qing Wu: Self-magnetization of pyrite and its application in flotation.

Hey man. Thanks for the vid. I was wondering since you’re always handling pyrite, is it toxic to work with or wear? I’m into crystal energy and wearing it but I’ve heard mixed opinions on weather or not it’s toxic to wear? Any thoughts?

Hi @Oscar Gaona - this is a very important question. Pyrite definitely CAN be toxic because it comes with arsenic. If we look at the global crystal industry 95% of pyrite globally sold comes from Peru anf of this amount probably 90% comes from Huanzala mine in Peru - yes, one mine basically for the entire global pyrite crystal industry. Huanzala Pyrite has extreemly low levels of arsenic which is why we can cut it in great quantities without my workers suffering any health effect - provided ofcourse that we are using good ventilation to get rid of any residual gases. Having said that, there are Peruvian companies, that do mix Pyrite from Trujillo province with real Huanzala pyrite and then sell the entire lot as Huanzala pyrite. Pyrite from Trujillo has a very high content of arsenic and is a toxic material. I spoke to workers from other workshops that got this material and cut it without knowing - Within less than half an hour they got headaches and felt dizzy and had to stop working - thats how toxic this stuff is. However there are dealers that still mix it into their pyrite because it is dirt cheap to buy (as nobody that thinks straight would touch it). Even though there are no scientific studies on that i have no doubt that such a toxic pyrite could affect final consumers and it is definitely out there in the crystal world without people knowing. At first glance, objects made from Trujillo pyrite may look the same as Huanzala pyrite. However, you can easily distinguish both: Have a look at unpolished parts. While Huanzala pyrite has a clean golden color, Trujillo pyrite shows black patches. After just a few months, the shine of the polished Trujillo pyrite will disappear and the material will blacken. This material is not only a danger to health it becomes ugly too. I recommed you to buyk only from recommended dealers of serious companies. As long as you can be sure to get real Huanzala Pyrite, you should be fine.

However it should not be dangerous if you only take it in your hands (as crystal specimen or polished product). Even if you wear it as jewelry you should not suffer any danger, given the fact that the piece is very small and it most likely will come set in silver and not directly touch your skin. Hi Bishawjoti, First of all (and sorry for the bad news) if your pyrite starts looking dull after a few months, then this is mainly because your dealer did sell you badly cleaned pyrite (this is done to save money and make more profit). Well-cleaned (and therefore more expensive) pyrite should shine for years without getting dull. If it's just a little bit try wiping with pure alcohol, but that's not going to do anything if it's really dull already. You may try polish paste for silver jewelry (pyrite is iron - a metal - with sulfur) but be careful to not rub it into the drusis - hard to get it clean afterward. However, I can't guarantee success with this. Your decision to take the risk or not. In the long run, it is better to spend a bit more with a trusted dealer.
