You’d never of thought that there would be the same level of interest in a diesel than steam but the HST has become an icon of British Railways, fortunately for me that I remember these like this as a child and grown up with them and worked along side them through out my career, amazing let’s hope they live on for many years
02/01/82 was the last journey for the legendary Deltics into Kings Cross, which puts this other iconic farewell into the shade. The Deltic was much more vocal into KX even when stationary and a IC125 tried to celebrate with the Deltic by adding a few tones on its horn, but was heckled by the huge crowd and it became silent to let the Deltic take the deserved accolades. 37 years on and the Class 43 IC125 gets its just rewards after 43 years of sterling service. Next will be the also iconic IC225's.
It's nothing to do with diesel or steam, and everything to do with Nostalgia and memory. It's human nature to miss what is gone, and remember the past fondly, sometimes rose tinting it all. Steam engines and BR, remembered fondly today, but sentiment was VERY different at the time. Many passengers hated the service from BR, many drivers loved the cleanliness and comfort that diesel locos brought. One day we will look back at the hated aspects of today's railway, such as the pacer, and talk about them as if they were the best thing ever. Passengers loved the HST when it came into service, giving unrivalled comfort and speed. Enthusiasts hated it and said they could never be fond of such a machine... Today we mourn it's slow withdrawal. (despite Scotland currently getting them as a "new upgrade" top of the range train 🤣) Even in the mid 80s people thought they were old and due for replacement. Today we want to keep them. Humans are a funny breed.
U r so right. I consider myself lucky to have been able to grow up and watch HSTS at speed on the Great Western Mainline. My earliest memories of trains are of HSTs at speed through Didcot. This is the train that brought me into the world of trains so I'll always remember it
But the original headlights and interiors are not there. Would have been 10 times nicer if it was like that alongside its old original smell rather then just a retro.
Im sure that one day some preservation society will make trip with a HST along the east cost mainline and once again the powerful rawr of this mighty train will be heard at Kings Cross!
I used to have a train set when I was a kid in the late 90's/early 00's, and one of the trains It come with was a HST in the Virgin trains livery. It's so sad to see such an iconic train retire. We might have not had the HST here in the North West but it'll forever remain an iconic British Train in my opinion, and that's coming from me who isn't even a train enthusiast.
Amazing, I’m a 50 year old blubbering wreck here. A massive part of my childhood history remembered like it was yesterday. This is not RIP, HST’s, you’ll live on forever in our fondest memories. Beautiful video, thank you for sharing.

Great tribute to the HST. Now I am sure it was you walked past the window of my train in Peterborough. I got off in Stevenage to see it roar by at full speed one last time and it did not disappoint. Got to Kings cross a few minutes after it arrived. Truly a day to remember
Got to see it at Peterborough, it was definitely a memorable occasion and an end of an era. I really hope the IC225s get a proper send off and are also repainted into the original intercity swallow. Have a merry Christmas and a happy new year Richard!
The HST was still quite new when I left the UK. I do hope that nicely repainted one makes it into a museum rather than the scrap heap. Very nice video. Merry Christmas
Great memories of the HSTs down the ECML as a kid. I debated flying back for these last trips, opted just to have my dad go see it in Durham to take some photos instead! Looks you had quite a crowd of people to hang out with ;) Iain
Fantastic footage. What an iconic train, so sad to see it go. I've seen it through from prototype on test on the WR as a child to its final end as a middle aged man! The train that saved BR.
Thanks Richard. There hasn't been a Loco so well designed since - in my opinion. Or a livery so well integrated either. I wonder whether Heritage lines will be able to run any? No idea how complicated or expensive the power cars are to run and maintain, but there is the issue of the carriages too. Long after he designed that I spent my college summer holidays with Kenneth Grange. A really nice man.

A great tribute to another iconic loco, probably the saviour of Inter City Services in the UK and saved the blushes of the RTC's high speed rail service development program. I remember 02/01/82 when the last Deltic arrived in the dark at KX and was met with a massive crowd on all the platforms. An interesting thought, which maybe shows the timescale of the HSTs' career *so far*: I saw the first set to visit Edinburgh Waverley in the late 1970s. I travelled to Waverley on a *Class 101* DMU, with a *Class 121* "Bubble Car" in the formation, and took a photo in the HST cab with a brand new Polaroid camera, the ones that spat the photo out the front. You then had to flap the photo about for a minute or so, as it developed - before your very eyes. The HST has lasted rather longer than the camera.🤣 A Merry Christmas to one and all,🎅🍻🥂 Dougie.
