This is version 3 of an SUV Cargo Storage deck, and I think I’m done. For now…
The first version was a deck platform above the cooler. That worked fairly well when loaded, but for daily driving having the deck that high wasn’t convenient.
The second version was low, about 10.5 inches off the bottom. The cooler went on top as well as the dog and had room for more gear on top as well as underneath. With the low design, it was possible to have the dog sit on her pad on TOP of a couple Frontrunner Wolf boxes for a really efficient use of space.
V2 saw the addition of the slide out table for preparing snacks and lunch on the trail as well as full on cooking if necessary. The table proved to be a really good design in function, the only problem was the CONSTANT RATTLING when the deck wasn’t loaded with a heavy cooler.

Now for V3 of the SUG Cargo Deck with Slide-Out Table. This one I made from 3/4 Sanded Pine Plywood and used the Kreg K5 Pocket Hole Jig for joinery. All the tools, materials and hardware is available at Home Depot.
The wood build is probably pretty close to the mass of the metal system, given that the metal I used was thin wall steel, however the wood table is a lot heavier. That said, it was a lot easier to built, didn’t require a welder and grinding.
I could probably make the wood deck a bit lighter by cutting out some portions of the sides, and I may do that at some point.
But this design works really well and the table is really functional and doesn’t make a sound at all going down the road.

I recently put a cargo baseplate in the back of my jeep and mounted a fridge slider to one side. I need to start building drawers one of these days soon. That slide out table you made is SICK. It's definitely got me thinking of ways i can incorporate something into whatever i end up building. Looks so handy. Thanks for sharing!

Just did this one myself. One of the most cost effective setups I've seen that works well. Working from my laptop now on it! My folded down Kuat Envy bike rack makes the perfect bench to sit on while using the slide out table.
thanks for the inspiration I made something very similar for my subaru forester after watching this and the only thing i added was another run of aluminium angle under the slide out and slide my folding table in there as well. so all fits neatly and out of the way. thanks again
I'm always reading comments before adding mine. This is 1 time I'm happy I did. I applaud you for accepting ideas and taking advantage of the ones best for your family. Moreso not getting mad about an idea that isn't. I think just the carpet (friction) and the box on left will keep the platform from moving. Great Design!! If you did decide to put something up front, you wouldn't need a whole board just a small strip along the bottom. I had a couple of thoughts and you can accept or deny as you please. My wife teases me cuz I'm always saying what if lol. A dowell rod 3/4 in. or any size sturdy enough to do the job but set a bit lower than uprights and you could roll it in holding the back up a little then when you set it down the uprights and weight of the platform would sit flat? I think angle iron would be too heavy and I don't know if they make aluminium angle iron? Then I thought of flashing like for a roof or doorway. Doorway kind that covers the threshold, turn it upside down and the round/ domed side could help you slide it in place. Logan Patterson I noticed that too. I loved my old worm drive but it eventually died
After watching your video I made a similar setup for my 2002 Nissan Xterra. I used four restaurant bus tubs for storage underneath the shelf. I have installed an old craftsman tool box with drawers on the shelf top along with some 1940 3x5, 5x10, 17" deep sliding drawer metal card file boxes for holding long tools. Made for a good handy man platform.
I'm doing a buildout on my jeep for adventuring and I'm going to make this with sleeping platform that attaches on a hinge. Thanks for the great video and the step by step process, I took a lot of notes and can't wait to get started.

I like the idea and it's nicely built, but let me make a couple of suggestions:
First, I would recommend using bolts and a backing plate to attach the loops used to secure the platform to the truck. In an accident or rollover, you have four wood screws that will take the brunt of the force. If you have a way to do it, I would also suggest anchoring the front of the platform if you can.
Second, the uprights will eventually loosen up as the cargo on top tries to shift side to side. This will either bind the table up or let it rattle. I would box in the front of the drawer area and add a right angle brackets to the rear on the outsides of the uprights to add lateral stability to the platform . It wouldn't hurt to add several to each side.
Other than that, very nicely done.

I disagree.
Firstly, adding more anchors to the front would be cumbersome to install and un-install. A rollover crash? Where is it going to go? It's anchored already. It's only a few pieces of plywood. All his stuff will fly around but, the wooden deck is going nowhere.
Secondly, the uprights are fine. There is minimal space for it to move laterally thereby getting loose. It's a tight build. Right angle brackets aren't good for that, anyway. Now, if you were to suggest a couple plywood gussets, I would accept that but, the angles really don't do too much. I agree a plywood piece across the front (assuming you mean just behind the seat) would be a good idea. That would give way more lateral support than any angle or gusset but, it would add considerable weight making for cumbersome installation.

I have been looking on TH-cam at all the different versions of truck bed boxes. Yours is by far the best. The only difference is that I have an 8' open truck bed so I will need to really waterproof the H out of it. Thanks so much.
Going to adapt this style of platform to my FJ80. My ears perked up at Sonora pass. I’m out of the Central Valley around Stockton.
You could cut a groove from the underside of the top with a router then put a screw or pin in the slide out table that rides in it. Cut the groove from the front to however far back you want the table to go out and you have yourself a nice stop so you don't pull out too much table. You could even cut two of them and drill a second hold a little farther forward if you want to be able to change how far it pulls out depending on how much load you think you want. I love the plan. Now I have to figure out how to add a second piece to sit in front of that for a sleeping platform (I'm in a 2nd gen Grand Cherokee so flat floor when seats folded).

This is exactly what i was planning todo. I just purchased an 07 Expedition and i wanted to build something very similar to keep my supplies under the unit. Love the table idea!!! We are totally doing this in our Excursion. We’ve been toting around tubs for our “camping” and “emergency” breakdown gear. It’s an annoying pain putting groceries on and around the tubs. This perfectly solves that issue. Best of all, I can make it the same height as my rear seat when folded forward so I can still load in larger items. Even better I will now have a platform for the larger items to rest on. Thanks for sharing!!!

Love it! I wish I was as handy as you! I didn't read all of the comments (too many) so this might have already been suggested, but the only suggestion I had was to add L-shaped trim piece along the front top of the whole rack where the carpet is to kind of cinch it down to the wood itself. Think of it like a transition strip for carpeting in a house. This would keep the carpet from peeling up at the highest traction area where you're sliding things in and out. Also, I just subscribed!
Hay thanks for the sub! That’s not a bad idea. It does pull up when i slide stuff in.
I wrote on my circular saw table the distance from the blade to the end this way I don’t need to measure it. I can quickly look at it and see what it is then add/subtract that from my measurement and put a mark there so I cut in the right spot.
I really like your design. I think the table idea is fantastic and just really like the overall design.
I would add an extra set of tie down spots on the top. Put it in the center this way you can use half and have the other side free for the dog.

Looks great..especially for the 4-Runner. I have a 80 series Land Cruiser so it's nice to have the fold down deck which the 4-Runner doesn't. Looks like yours comes in handy like that.

That Coleman cooler is one of the best on the market. I’ve tested a lot for work and it really is an amazing bit of equipment.
You used aluminium. This might bend in time. Use a metal ball slider with total extraction. This will hold the table better and allow for the full use of the table surface. I'm learning as i go too.

Finally this looks exactly what I want. I have a 2003 Montero and I want something that I can utilize for the full rear however since taking the 3rd row out I have a nice in floor storage that I don't want to loose so full length draw system is not what I'm looking for. I love the slide out piece of wood too. If I did this It would allow me to separate some storage bins for camping gear yet still have access to that bottom storage. Thanks!

On the drawer, attach some teflon runners underneath so it does not drag on the carpet. Maybe even a sheet of plastic. I would cut out a quarter of the front of the drawer about where the rope is installed. This allow access to a few simple things without pulling the drawer out. Also makes it easier to see inside without pulling the drawer out. It is not like you are filling it with water or sand for the kids to play in.
Put a leg on the end of the table and you can pull it out further. Find something telescopic.

Roller, soft close, drawer slides are cheap. Overnight delivery. Run masking tape along the wood where you'll cut-avoid chipping-minimize sanding. And more.

I wanted all your viewers to know about a way of getting cheap lumber for any and all projects. My local Lowes does this. Any damaged, short cut and/or odd sizes of lumber, trim, drywall anything they have lying around, they bundle onto a flat cart and sell. I bought $700 of sheet goods for $100. Of course ther are some items I cant use but all on all, its the deal of a lifetime.
Dude, please, take the self tappers which hold the little "hoops" for the turnbuckles, and replace them with little bolts (we might call them machine screws where I live, with backing fender washers (aka large OD washers). Also, add an adjustable stopper for the table.

Great job but... if you had spread the down panels/ legs further apart and added a center leg you might have had 4 drawers in the space all on heavy duty drawer slides. More containment and no weight restrictions in the drawers but what you did works well.
This video was very interesting and inspirational. There are similar TH-cam vids featuring pull-out drawers and camper arrangements for pickup trucks. My family has an old Chevy Astro van, and I'm thinking about the possibilities for sliding drawers that could reach under the back seat. Our Astro usually serves as a traveling tool cart, hauling lots of tools, equipment, and materials for various projects.

What a nice simple design. I am looking at bed designs for my E150 van and this one is in the top 3. The slide out table may move it up to first position. I have never seen this design before. I own 2 vans with 2 different bed designs.

Check out the DRIFTA drawers systems with removable table. It's seriously nice. I put a similar drawer system in my e350 and it's great. I get a full queen bed with pull out kitchen in the rear.
Nice build. I think you. Could use your runner system upside down and make a drawer runner system without losing side to space. Might just have to add a base for stability. That’s what I actually thought you were doing when you added the aluminum slides. I’m making one soon for my JK
I think for drawers I’d put in a base and have is slide on plastic sliders or just the base plywood.
Nice build. You did a nice job and your previous system gave me an idea for my pickup truck. I might go with a metal frame instead of a wood one.
One thing I might do on your would be to add a front that goes all the way from the bottom to say 2 or 3 inches above the top to keep small stuff from rolling down behind the seats.
It would also add some additional side to side stabilization.

I'm making this! You kept it simple, very nice. I think I will cut out some 7 inch holes in the vertical uprights and see if that saves some weight. Maybe put the sliding table on the bottom so I don't have to reach all the way into the cubby hole to get something.
I made some thing similar using restaurant bus tubs as drawers just slipped them in. No brackets or slides. Works great so far. Using a drawer tool box hold other smalls.

Wow wish ide seen this while ago for my SUV. I still have it. But I have a truck now and want to build something in the bed that's water proff also. Till I find a top or ladder rack to my truck. But wow thank you such a desine I maybe can do and being I'm disabled so thanks. God bless.

Nice work, I subscribed. One suggestion would be to use T-nuts to attach tie down connections. You might never pull yours out but they would be bombproof with T-nuts

Great design! I love the pull out board. Although next time you may want to use something more durable than Thompson’s. Maybe polyurethane or a better deck sealer.
Suggest adding a folding adjusting leg for the table to access the full capacity of the pullout table
I made one from your measurements and it worked really well. I used brackets but have bought a pocket screw jig and will go back and redo the joins. I didn't install the shelf because I wanted the extra room underneath. It's big enough for two deck chairs and a cool box. High quality plywood cost about $50. Thanks for posting.
I don't have a pocket hold jig and was wondering how brackets would work. Did you find that they worked well? I honestly can't afford a pocket hole jig at the moment, it's always on the back burner. Looking to build this for my Kia Soul for camping.
You could try threaded inserts and bolts from the top.
@@AllTerrainFamily would wood glue and a nail gun work and some bracket support at the joint? I'm trying to avoid a bunch of large holes on top. I'm not covering mine with carpet.
Look for Simpson Strong Tie brackets at the hardware store and use 1/2 inch wood screws. Nails are not going to be good.
