You're back! Been missing your videos. Loved the latest presets you released. This is a lens I'll be buying this year. I got the 35 f1.4 GM last year and I absolutely love it. I can't wait to pick up the 50mm f1.2 for photo and video.
Before I recently switched to Canon the Sony 50mm 1.2 was my favorite lens! It’s crazy sharp and so beautiful! Definitely by far the best Sony lens available today
@@TerraThink I got the 28-70 f/2 for the low aperature and great prime like quality, the 70-200 f/2.8, the 15-35 f/ 2.8, and the 85 f/1.2. Favorite lens right now is the 85 for the insane bokeh. Also gonna pick up at 35 f/1.8 Macro lens this week and I shoot with the Canon R6 Mark ii
I splurged in november and bought the 50 1.2, I loooove it. But after seeing so many reviews comparing it to the 50 1.4 GM, I hardly see the difference. Iam thinking of switching just to have a smaller lens. But did you perceive any rendering difference between the 1.2 and 1.4?
Lots of differences. But you have to spend time searching for reviews that are not (1) sponsored by Sony, and (2) goes beyond "check these two photos I can't find a difference" type of reviews. Differences are: (1) slower autofocus, which is apparent when going above 10 shots/second. For most not an issue today, but will probably be an issue in the future if most Sony bodies gets faster. (2) Much worse lens flares, the f/1.2 is much better at lens flares. (3) Busier bokeh, not only smaller bokeh. Check Magic Wedding Photographer for examples, it's a quality issue. And finally (4) 30% less light, which makes a difference if you shoot evening/night time photos.
The 50mm 1.2 is by far my favorite lens. Wide open its amazing but also stopped down to f8 it gives perfect corner to corner sharpness. Which for my niche, artwork documentation and reproduction, is so crucial. Only the 90mm Macro G and this 50 achieve that perfection corner to corner in my experience.
Great review. Straight to the point. What makes this lens so great is indeed the image presentation. It has that something extra that the other 50mm lens don't have. A bit like the 135mm f1.8 GM in that the image presentation is just lovely.
I want to get a 24mm...though I've never shot with such a wide angle. I shoot (photographically) mostly people and street stuff..so I imagine it'll be quite a challenge.
I’ve owned the 55 for 8 years and bought the 1.2 5 months ago - absolutely amazing lens but agree with everything you said, the 55 and 50 1.4 are both also fantastic. The look and performance of the 1.2 are just out of this world though.
Those who bought the GM can remain relieved. From 'all' fiew reviewers I trust in regards to my interests, we wouldn't want to trade it in (first, in terms of image qualities, ..., last : no sony induced framerate limitation). (However, I do prefer keep my DG DN f1.2 over the GM 35mm.)
I love the 50 mm focal length and wanted the best 50 there is and this is it. Don't regret the money spent on this lens because the look and feel it just is beyond anything else.
Hey man, glad to see a fellow Kiwi reviewing cool stuff. I'm new to the Sony system (from Canon EF) so I am just fleshing out the lens collection and found the video really helpful. I'm probably still going to go with the 50 1.4 just for uniformity with Sony's other 1.4 GM lenses in terms of size, weight, and filters but damn do these shots look amazing.
Very cool to see you’re making videos again Chris! =) Been missing that. I don’t see myself spending that much on one single lens, even though there is something to be said about a really shallow depth of field on not-too-long focal lengths. That’s the reason I love the look that the 24 1.4 can give you. Same idea basically. Whereas the typical 85mm f/1.8 thing - I just can’t stand it anymore, and I only use long focal lengths when I need the reach for practical reasons, much like you I guess. But because I don’t have the money to spend, I’ll stick with the 55 1.8 for the time being, and so far I’ve got no complaints. =) When I picked it up, I was shocked at how fast it focuses. Hard to believe Sony built a lens with such quick AF capabilities when at the time there wasn’t even a camera nearly fast enough to make use of that. Compare that to the cheap 50 1.8, which is slow AF (pun intended) and a disgusting bottleneck for any Sony camera from recent years.
Looking good Chris! Congrats on the OG Land Cruiser too. Can tell you missed 24mm from your recent pics - that FOV is definitely you. Have you considered getting an a7RV? 26MP in medium raw but then have another mode setup for APS-C normal (again 26MP). You’ll get 24 1.4/35 2.1 out of the same lens and non-huge files too. Might work well for the full length verticals. Ps you corrected that vid quick!! 🤣
I loved my 50 1.2, until the motor failed in it over Christmas. Everyone was asking me what was happening because it was so loud. Very little use other than portraits indoors. BestBuy refunded it at 18 months old, shout out to Best Buy. Now I have to decide if I want to risk it again.
HI. I can't afford to buy both lens 50 1.4GM and 85 1.4GM. I realized as I have 135 1.8GM I rellay don't use the 85. So I would prefer buying the 50 1.4 instead. If you had to chosse only one lens the 50 1.4 GM or 85 1.4 GM, which one would it be?
Hey Chris!!! Love the vid!!! I’m rolling 35mm 1.4 Fuji and 50 1.2 Sony and loving it for events! Just did a really fun art even where I did full body portraits with the 50 1.2 down a tunnel of books to get that “Look” I do think I would call it medium format ish… not really sure what else to call it? Shallow depth of field full body portrait doesn’t hit the same lol… but they turned out wild!!! Used a direct flash and it’s definitely a stand out kind of shot. Can’t get away from my Fuji tho 😂😂 seem to have to always have it on me… the images produced just have a bit more life in them lol to me. Which is why I used both rofl!! I find classic chrome with color set to 4 and the Sony profile SH fade to 0 or 1 and color set to 2 or 3, all matched good enough straight out of camera that I was confident to deliver a ton of SOOC Jpgs from both systems for the event :) Love the vids as always and like hearing your opinion and listening to your journey 🤘 have an awesome day!!
Have had the Sigma 35 1.2 since release and as you say, just has that special look. It’s made my right side stronger but wow, holding myself back from the 50 lol
I do keep my dg dn 85 over the gm. However I still starve for a GM-type AF 75mm f1.2. A hypothetical 24-70 at f 2 (instead of 2.8) - I would go for it, 'no matter size'. But not for any other zoom (except my f4 24-105 for rare journalisne and video) because otherwise I would under-use my gm 50 1.2, dg dn f1.2 35mm and 105 1.4. I know that zoom range 20 -80 is tremendously rewarding to me, but I set this limitation over the f2.8)

Welcome back. Always happy to watch one of your videos when they pop up. Also, that’s a great shot that you are using for your TH-cam banner. Cheers

Thanks mate
He's back!!!! So good.
I love it too .....24mm f1.4 GM ......50mm f 1.2 GM ........ Always

be interesting to see how the new sigma 1.2 50mm compares man. Always love your uploads
Didn’t know that was coming. Looking forward to that

we gonna have 24 - 70 f2 GM soon. Are you going to grab one?

Very kind of you to share some raw files.

Welcome back, bro. Missed you haha
1.4 is middle ground? It seems like a top end lens to me.
I mean it’s exactly that. In between the 1.8 and 1.2, so yeah. Middle

I think you would have been disappointed with the 50mm 1.4 when you have that Zeiss 55 1.8. That lens is Legendary.
I adapted the 50mm 1.4 GM to my Nikon Z5. It was a fantastic lens, but it wasn't as sharp as Nikon's Z 50mm 1.8 but it was a tad faster at 1.4

A7r5 or a7iv for hybrid?
cannot believe these presets can be sold.....
Eyy been a while! Glad you're back
ALL is

said between 2:41 and 3:55.
(Just surprised You didn't realize it far longer ago. But hey,.. we are humans ❤
Beats me why, if you knew and loved the old Canon f1.2 50mm, you did not jump to find out right away.
I do keep my dg dn 85 over the gm.

Thank you. Too much time not talking about the lens being reviewed.
I got rid of my 55 and regret it. Don't sell yours.
