    I find that most times, when I dial an amp in, I try to make it feel as good as it can and I just scroll through irs until I find the tone that I like the most and do eq from then on to really shape the sound

      I used to play H&K Puretone through Marshall 2x12 cab with T75's and it sounded great. Had to replace the speakers when I switched to JCM 800 2203 because of the scooped mids and fizzy high end. Theres a reason why t75 is a classic speaker. With some amps it sounds amazing.

    V30 and Reaper. G12-T75 is screechy and the Green Beret sounds like a V30 under a blanket. Very good alternative was for me when I played a Marshall TSL 100 through a Krank 4x12 with Eminence Legend 1258 speakers! The sound had all the Marshall growl but more expanded to low and high and more note-to-note clarity without being flubby on the bass or screechy on the treble.

    Studio or stage the 75's are my go to. When playing the heavier stuff 30's were the go but now that I'm older my tastes have changed; the green's are also very flavoursome.

  • @addicted2tone349

    I love V30s on saturated amps, it's just the sound of heavy rock.
    I like greenbacks on lower gain stuff. The darker tone and the natural cone breakup just sounds cool with bluesy rock stuff.
    Great video, I've preached this for years to guys who were struggling with their tone. Speakers and a cab make or break a head.
    The V30 is my favorite overall in this video. That crunch is fucking delicious!

  • @ConstantineJajas
    @ConstantineJajas 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Τ75 for me. Great video. I wish people would take speakers into account more. The amp alone is around 70% of the tone but you could easily argue that if you like and play through a specific speaker than a lot of amps can work for you.

    Right now, for simplicity's sake, I use the modelers inside my DAW. When I finally get around to trying to record "for real" I will use both a Shure 57 and a Sterling ST59. I have a pair of ADA split-cabs. A lot of folks don't like the stock speakers but I love 'em. They allow me to crank the presence a little more since they're so dark. I've never had a problem with them in the mix (especially after rolling off the low end gently after 150), and they punch. I would like to get a Marshall cab with V30s to combine with them though and see how that sounds. I'm using a Hughes and Kettner Trilogy (Mark2 I think) if anyone cares.

    I could see someone rigging up a 4 × 12 cab with 4 different speakers using 4 Integral Close Miking System, maybe the Black Widow Audio Designs MGP-1A or two Synergy Amps Syn-2 and 4 different preamps and a valve/tube or solid state power amp. Add a midi foot controller & loop switcher to switch between preamps like a RJM, BOSS or Morningstar Engineering, etc and an Ampete cabinet switching system would be pretty killer. Much cheaper and easier to use a Two Notes Torpedo Live or CAB M or a modeller/profiler but it's great to have options/choices that can suit different usage scenarios

    The speaker in a FRFR cab, is it much different from a speaker in a regular guitar cab, usually the fr cab has a tweeter in it, except the mission where the tweeter is built in the speaker. But every speaker has it's own sound. You can tell in the axefx3 every ir is different. Thanks for sharing.

    The V30 sounded great, but I like bright tones, so it's the reaper all the way for me. Reminds me of Slash's tone on AFD. Very bright by itself, but it sits perfectly in the mix! So for me, playing alone, I'd take the V30, but for recording, the Reaper.
    I hope you get to try out the Retro & Veteran 30 speakers from WGS one day, and compare them to the Celestion V30.

  • @PierceThirlen2

    It always amazes me when guitar players think it's a good idea playing full range through a woofer. As you've got no high end because of the inductive reactance of the woofer's voice coil, you need to push more voltage to the speaker to bring the highs back up to normal, so the amp clips prematurely. In the '70s I used a full range Altec Lansing 1204B cabinet with a 15" woofer & a 511B horn with 808-8A driver for the midrange & highs. Later I switched to an Altec 1208 bass horn cab on the bottom.

    I have tried to explain this to many of my friends. Speaker choice is a HUGE difference in tone. If you loved the amp, but then get it home and don't enjoy it, you likely have the wrong cabinet, don't go buy a new head.
    Then when recording I showed my band mates how much moving a microphone 1" totally alters the sound of the recorded tone. Blew their minds, so now we create and use IRs. Haha.

    I didn't care for the G12T75 here. To my unrefined ear, they do sound really good with a JCM2000 DSL100 or even an Orange CR120 (that surprised me when pairing them at Guitar Center). I generally love Reapers, but wasn't that thrilled with it. The Vintage 30 sounded great (although I generally don't care for them). Thanx for the great vid. Yes, we can hear differences, but it would be nicer when You find a way to measure the differences. Unfortunately and usual almost ALL videos about speaker comparison are working with "hear the difference" but we all know the feeling, when the one and only super sound do not sound the same on next day! So we have to find a more comprehensible way to understand the diffences between speakers.

    I think I liked the V30 and the Reaper best, but they all sounded good in their own unique ways. You might find that the Green Beret or G12T sits better in a mix with bass, vocals and drums. --Would be a great experiment. Cool video. V30 rocks!!! Do you leave all four of these speakers in your cab all the time? Seems like a great way to go, since you can always mic the one you want to be prominent, or mic the one you want to record with. Cool.

      Yeah they still stay in there for that reason!

      @@LeonTodd Leon, is there a big difference in volume between the G12T, which I'm thinking is 75 watt, verses the V30, which I'm guessing is 30 watt? -Or, do they both seem to be pushing about the same volume when all four speakers are operating?

    Is there any phasing issues when using 4 different speakers?
    Or is that not a possible issue?

  • @GeneSchmidt
    @GeneSchmidt 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's a profound difference. I'm surprised.
    Secondly... you have the pickup selector on the neck pickup??? Do you have that switch wired backwards?

    I really enjoy all your different marshall demos and comparisons Leon, have you ever got your hands on a jvm410h before? I'd be curious to know what think about them and see what kind of tones you get out of one. Maybe a future demo? Cheers!

    V30 is my fav. Great video, shows you can get flexibility by loading up a 4x12 with all different speakers. Did you do the recordings while sitting where you were on separate takes or was the amp cranked with you out if the way? Curious. Cheers!

    makes much more sense than testing the same speaker / cab with different amps. The sound is more or less similar in such a scenario as the cab is the crutial factor in changing the amp's sound imo
