Isn't it the most beautiful song though? So rich in meaning. Someone accepting that their relationship is fatally flawed and has no future, but can't deny the emotional connection between them. But, displaying mastery of maturity, being able to say through tears that you wish the best for them in the future. Even love with someone else. Breaking up with someone is so devastating very few of us have the ability to do it with grace. The very deep emotional component makes it hard to navigate. But this song illustrates the adult way to do it -- not by text, not in anger, not with vengeful thoughts, but with grace and good will. I can't say there are many if any songs of this caliber of depth and meaning that have been written in the last 50 years.

Great ensemble, vocalist is gorgeous and has an exquisite voice. I think I would accept this rendition at ear value if I had not heard Sinatra's version. He was a master and established the bar, say like a Karen Carpenter or Marilyn Monroe. It's very hard to break through the gold standard. The only criticism I'd have would apply to both Sinatra and here -- Sinatra's version seems juuuust a little too cavalier in view of the meaning of the song. And this one is just a little too "still in love", in the same context. It's sung like a love song instead of a break up song. My break ups at least have never been joyful or lovey, but emotionally devastating.

I think taking the lyrics in self-context: "Ever lovers, never friends..., my breaking heart and I agree that you and I can never be..." it's pretty clear this is a resigned acknowledgment of a troubled relationship. Perhaps love is lost by this point and it's just a pragmatic capitulation. But neither Sinatra's light hearted rendition or this love song rendition really applies to what's being communicated. I can't tell you HOW to sing it, only that singing it happily or in love doesn't really fit with the narrative of the lyrics. Regardless, both renditions are exceedingly lovely. Two of the best I've heard and I've heard many.
