How to Hold a Bow Using the Mongolian or Thumb Release

  • Here is how I perform the Mongolian draw or thumb draw. It's my way of doing it that works for me. While I show using the thumb as a rest for traditional bows that lack a rest or shelf, this can also be done on a bow with a rest.
It can even be done with modern bows, just remember that you shoot off the opposite side as a three finger Mediterranean draw. That means that if you are right handed, find a left handed bow, or a bow with the rest on the right side. The opposite is true of lefties.
I regularly shoot a left-handed compound bow with this release with very consistent results.

thank you for the physics lesson on the string twist. I never knew that. I will take it into consideration from now on.

This was a big help. I made several pvc mongolian -style bows and only the last one was okay. Then I stuggled with the correct thumb release, thinking too that I needed to make a thumb ring. All of this effort had to happen without a dedicated work space and has just been a pain! I do house repairs and have a lot of tools but often they are at a worksite overnight so I have to get creative. Anyway, your clear and precise instructions were just what I needed. Thanks!

Jared, thank you for actually explaining about the arrow placement. This is exactly how my ancestors held the arrow against the bow. But, they didn't leave any written instructions :) you described it perfectly and it makes PERFECT sense. Thank you friend. Now I could just convince you to move to Nauvoo Illinois to teach in person, I know of several boyers that would love to sit and listen and learn. Keep up the GREAT things in Archery....

Good staff. I was sportsman by Mongolian archery. My old teacher told me many things about this technique. There are many more advantages in it. and of course it has disadvantages.

Thanks for the informative video. Recently I have switched to using a 韘 thumb-ring, and I really like it. And now I am even putting the arrows into the target, instead of way off to the right!

Very useful video, Nick. I have been shooting very consistent groupings a few feet left of my target for some time with my PVC bow and I think I realize why now.

It can hurt if you aren't used to it. It's like using your fingers, you can get used to drawing higher weights with the thumb. You could also use a thumb glove or thumb ring to reduce the strain on your thumb.

Try adjusting to the left then? With the Mongol draw you can't sight down the arrow so you have to adopt a different way of predicting the arrow's flight. To give up on it because your arrow didn't do what you expected it to do is quite silly, don't you think? :P

Do you hold the arrow in place with your forefinger? I see that you don’t have a nocking point. How do you make sure the arrow doesn’t fall off the string when you pull back (my arrows’ nock is slightly wide, so doesn’t grip on the string) or doesn’t slide up when you move the ring under it?

Hi i truely enjoy your series much fun. Now since you like to use pvc, you should start making a mongolian thumb ring for release out of 45 degree pvc elbows. i have done it and its easy but fun thanks again

  • @jmstrmp56
    @jmstrmp56 8 ปีที่แล้ว

I stopped the video and tried this with just my thumb it works the arrow stays on the riser with the arrow on the right of the riser pulling right handed and vise versa .I made a PVC thumb ring and failed, I have short stubby thumbs,(so archery can be genetic) the joint of my thumb is behind the second knuckle of my index finger to far ,my index finger gets in the way so this will work bared thumbed for a light bow . My method is to pull with my middle and 4th finger , my index finger goes along the back of the arrow to hold it against the riser my pinky finger stays neutral I can pull a heavy bow like this and shoot eastern style but I don't know how it will work for speed shooting .

If right handed, is there a way to shoot the Mongol recurve as you would with any other recurve just without the riser, such as letting it rest on your pointer finger? I'd just like to know before I actually get one.

I just tried your method and have found that there is no possible way that I am going to be able to do this. My arrows and all of them went wild! The only thing my thumb did was, NOTHING! I would have to say that while watching you draw your bow that your bow must be a very light draw.
Good luck with what ever your doing.

You seem like a nice fella - no disrespect meant but you are doing just about everything wrong for the thumb draw. I suggest you read a book called 'The art of shooting a short reflexed bow with the thumb ring' or 'Saracen Archery'. These will show you the many correct ways of shooting with the thumb draw.
