Baking.....great idea Chris. There's a lot of pleasure in that for you but it needs a few attempts to get it right so don't give up if the first try isn't how you like it. Use your male analysis skills to assess what's not to your liking & adjust the next time. Soon you'll get it right. Crumble is very delicious if you don't make too much crumble topping & also you bake it hot so that it's crispy on top. Soggy, heavy crumble isn't worth your while as you discovered. Butterfly cakes are easy to do but you're better off making your own butter icing to get the consistency & sweetness right for your taste. Dusting them with icing sugar as the finishing touch is ace, it looks festive & tastes delicious. Finally, you're right that sharing your baking with others is rewarding to the spirit, justifies the effort involved & prevents your waistline from overexpanding
Thanks Ferney. I agree with everything you say. I had a bout of laziness on returning from the pub. I used the easy option and the sprinkling of icing sugar would have been better but as mentioned. CBA….Cant’ be ar*ed. Thanks for the support and I will improve on both the crumble and cakes.
Love it, Chris! Good on yer, having a go at baking. Back in the 50's, McDougall's, the flour people, used to run cake competitions around churches, village halls etc. In 1958, I got a McDougall's certificate for my Queen Cakes! 🙂 ( I did have a bit of guidance from my mum.) I did like the Oxford Canal. My wife and had a month on it back in 2021. Have a good week.
Thanks Malcolm. McDiougall’s. Do they still make flour? Good on you for your win. Isn’t it a shame those event don’t appear to happen these days. I think that’s great PR marketing and people actually buy their flour because it it. Good CSR too for their website. Life is more about profit these days. Such a shame. My cakes may have got the best effort award, ie sh*t but edible. They did improve two days later when I was very hungry!!
Another winner, Chris! I was very happy that you had such a good experience at the bed and breakfast. That’s kind of what I meant by “making ME TIME” for yourself. I figured something out about you. From the very first episode, I’ve noticed that sometimes you’re in high spirits but sometimes not so much. I’ve given your ups and downs very serious thought. Here’s my conclusion, YOU ARE HUMAN ! That’s right! You are just like the rest of us. You don’t don a cape and colorful body clinging costume and become Canal Man! By the way, I just attempted to send you the info concerning merch a few minutes ago. I heard a swoosh on my phone; I hope that means it went through to you. I’d really like to ramble on about a mess of things, but I know that you’re a busy man. Have a good week with some me time in your schedule. Best wishes, Tom.
I got your emails and will be responding after all the comments. Thanks Tom. I am human and do have normal weeks of ups and downs. I make a conscious decision not to do this instagram style of life. That’s fake. I’ll be in touch later today.
As usual Chris great vlog & very humorous. Cakes look great & scraping the bowl brings back childhood memories of arguing with brother of whose turn it was. Love the apron, i remember my ex-wife calling me a fork or was it the other word!!!!
Loved ya apron 😂 cakes looked fine to me,,,,, once again a great vlog, always gives me a grin,,,, keep em coming, look forward to meeting up when I get to the k&A 👍
Great vlog Chris, definitely not crap. My best tip with the cake mixture is to beat the eggs in furiously but then very gently "fold" in the flour with a spatula. If you beat the flour in you'll lose all the air that you furiously beat in with the eggs. Good first attempt though mate
Thanks for the tip Craig. What I have noticed will all this baking stuff, is there appears to be a number of different ways to get the same result. I’ll try different versions the next time I make them which wont be too long away. I just need to get to a shop where I can find ingredients. Banbury is the next big shop.
If I do fall in because of over stretching, I’ll let you all know. I’m in good shape at the moment so I doubt if it’ll happen in the short term. Thanks Joan
You gotta watch that forward thrusting motion in to the sill as it can flood you boat if the bow doors are open and on top of that, the bump can deflate the cake you may have in the oven at the time.
Good point Matt. I have adjusted the way I do those skinny locks. On my own as there is no other way…I only open one paddle. I just take my time and I rather enjoy it too. As for the baking, That’s becoming more enjoyable as well.
Your not crap there is sooo much content out there which is a lot worse and reckon people just flick from one to another...keep on boating I certainly appreciate the filming content and banter it's a refreshing change 👍👌 Arthur
Thanks Arthur. I appreciate the support and I reckon the TH-cam effect of small pieces of information means we will only be able to sustain a small attention threshold in the future. There are trade offs in life with no one measuring cause and effect. AI is another dangerous example.
Good point Chris, I think what goes around comes around and yes attention span is short atm but hopefully people will see the value of good vlog content 🤔
I have a small hand whisk but it wouldn’t have done that. The electric version would require somewhere to live. Not sure where? Disadvantage of boat life for me at least. Thanks for the comment Sharon.
Loved this episode. Fairy cakes, gosh it's been a while since I've thought of those. Remember cooking them with granny. I only used to make them for my boys birthday parties. And with my grand daughter a couple of times. I have to cook gluten free now. What a bother, like learning how to bake again.
Where did all this gluten free stuff need come from? Something has gone wrong with our lives over the past 50+ years! The best bit was licking the spoon and cleaning the bowl.
My mother god bless her used to make the most beautiful butterfy buns ,light as a feather they were.Try as i might i never quite get them the same.On appearence yours look identical Chris ,unfortunately i cant comment on taste and texture but thankyou for bringing back very happy memories. Stuart ( the mad Yorkshireman)
Colin is spot on about the lock flow, I live on the BCN and some of the locks are fierce and if I’ve not got the rope wound on a bollard I can’t hold the boat back. The cat is not a fan of this failure.
Thanks Matt. I have adjusted the way I do the skinny locks and only open one paddle. The gift is, it doesn’t matter which one which is better than the big locks. The disadvantage is, it’s slower. But then, if you’re in a rush, plan better or get another style of life! Just my thoughts which I mentioned to someone who was frustrated following me.
Thanks for the video. As you don't need to get out on both sides one ladder and bollards on one side is all that is needed ( if you even need that). Surely not having to walk all the way round to open or close the pair of gates makes it quicker and easier. I'm a big fan of skinny locks. Try a dash of milk, beat the eggs before adding them gradually and sieve the flour. Should give a better result. Have fun!
I agree with the skinny locks now I've got used to them. I mention that on the next vid. It was strange from the wide locks however. I made more cakes this week and turned out......not as good. Edible but not as good. I hadn't read your comment before hand. Next time.....
Just watched your latest vlog. Loved it. I think you’re a natural comedian and don’t realise it. Worried me when you stretched across the lock gates - very dangerous and potential for an accident! So many boaters open the paddles so quickly that it knocks the boat forwards and backwards. When anyone offers to open the paddles for me I ask the to go slowly. Butterfly cakes looked lovely, well done. Reminded me of baking with my Mum and licking the bowl…happy days. Thanks for a lovely vlog.
Thanks very much for the supportive comment. The skinny locks I learnt very quickly not to open the gate quickly and as I can only do them on my own, I only open one. With two people on the boat, easy. Solo, only one paddle. I’ve annoyed a couple last week as I was too slow for them. The woman was quite rude but I was a good boy and just let them pass…….with a viper style comment to help them on their way.
Glad you had a spoilyourselfnight by the cut instead of on it Chris. great to see the enthusiasm Colin has for life afloat - i think your encouragement has got him off to a good start. i think i've heard in the not too distant past that its youtube that does the mysterious depletion of subscribers? have to check that out
Chris has been a star, very grateful for his patience, encouragement, humour, and interesting mind, he is a goodun no doubt. Colin CHRIS, BIG THANKS TO YOU. Colin
I’ve heard the subscriber depletion thing too. Not sure how it can be cheated out or why they do it. Deliberate or not….it’s a pain and disrespectful. I think the journey with Colin is going to work out just fine. Thanks for the comment and to you Colin, you’re a gent.

Hey Chris. Great vlog, still can't get over how good I think your music choice is on your vlogs .... this is especially pertinent comment given some of the music I hear emanating from your narrowboat ‼️ 😄😄
Good to see you looking so light with spring in your step sir - you look well ! Napton is a joy of a find & the b&b a fabulous example of how those sadly derelict canal side assets could be repurposed or simply put to good use !! As for Colin & Trevor... Sunday sandbag bumper edition surely !!
I agree with the two Ronnies. I’ll have to try to get them both to sit down on camera. Not sure it’ll happen but here’s hoping.I’ve written to CRT about re-purposing assets. It’s about a strategy. I reckon they are only interested in selling for a quick buck to make their life easier. The lack of assets will be a problem for the next management team
I'm sure there are quite a few canalside properties that could be brought back into use, which would make money for CRT as well as being a haven/ resource fornboating community. Keep at it, CRT might get the message one day. Great vlog
I’ve actually written to the CRT about this very point. I hope I get an answer. Either way, I’ll report back to you all in the very near future. Thanks Jackie.
Chris really enjoyed your vlog, they are always fun. Thanks for the hard work. Fairy cakes looked ok, just make your own buttercream, much better. 🧁🧁 until next time with Julie's Jugs. 😊
Ho Chris Trev and Colin (me) will be making great sacrifices, to make ourselves available, to test and comment on your culinary skills of making fairy cakes especially with the folding in the flour, and Chris if your are not fully aware of the folding technique, I will happily show you for a small gift .... allowing me the opportunity to clean out the cake mixture in the mixing bowl 🥣. Mmmmmm Colin. They were great.
Cakes looked very good to me. Failsafe recipe I used 4 Oz caster sugar 4 ozsr flour 4 Oz soft stork Marge two eggs teaspoon baking powder put everything in bowl and beat well. Into cup cakes.cook as u did for yours frosting on top like u did they look lovely. Butternut squash u making a curry with it or roast veg or delicious soup with it be nice, with couple chick stock cubes nice onion garlic then wizz it up when cooked👍good vlog as usual👍👌
All the same measurements was what I was told. Stork marg. Now that brings back memories of adverts in the 60s and 70s. The butternut squash is for a soup. I’m starting to like soups now I’m making them myself. Thanks for the support Jean.
Nice one Chris, I thoroughly enjoy watching your vlogs, and joining you along the canals, especially like the interactions with other boaters. Looking forward to seeing you on the kennett and avon canal. Thanks for sharing👌

Watch that sill Chris !! They terrify me, someone once told me there are more sunken boats when the boat get gets stuck on the sill !!! 😮 locks just worry me😂 great vlog !! Lovely fairy cakes well done 😊😊😊 !!!
I’m never complacent with the cill. I do wander back and forth to make sure the boat is still floating and not stuck. I also only open one paddle when I’m on my own. The boat moves slower and I can control it better. The boats that get stuck is from complacent behaviour. I’ve seen it myself and forced myself to advise the arrogant couple their boat is at a jaunty angle and if that was normal. Never seen a couple flap so much. Thanks for the comment Jayne.
Another good one Chris, and sorry I failed to comment last Vlog on the electric hybrid debate - refreshing to hear from a boater on their choice and their albeit brief experience on the canals. That's not a criticism. I've reviewed your first Vlogs after launch and your questions on choice were much and "will it work for me" the same. It also gives you chance to re-interview in 6- 9- 12 months time. I'm looking forward to your next guest. Losing subscribers, please don't change your format as I'm sure your key audience will always watch your individual and passion for the life you lead.👍
Thanks Malc. It would be good to catch up I with them again in a few months time or a year. Hopefully I will catch up though. My off the camera chats with John are he is happy with the decision. For me, there are pros and cons to everything. If the owner is happy, who are we to complain! I’m not going to change what I do. I do want to improve all the time though. Very nice video there Chris, like the stretch method on opening the lock, reminds me of the sayings, there in a bag you won’t lose them. And good for you if have a few days off the narrow boat and you can be in walking distance of him/her the boat that is, see you on the next one .👍👍👍👍☘️☘️☘️☘️🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

Another wonderful vlog Chris. Learn something every time. Great to see you traveling with Colin who is a natural. Keep the culinary capers coming. Looking forward to seeing the jugs
Great use of music this week. Fairy cakes looked good - they are a lot of effort for little return though with the amount of mess, especially when you can buy them cheaply from major supermarkets! Perhaps I’m just lazy but I prefer to bake cakes (great packet mixes available!). Have a good week Chris 😊
I agree Mishka but it was a bit of fun making them. I am considering doing more when I get to place to buy the ingredients. I have responded to Charcoal colour in an email if you’re interested. Thanks for the support.
My family recipe, weigh 3 eggs, same weight of butter, sugar and SR flour, 1 tablespoon milk, 1 teaspoon baking powder, dash of lemon juice or vanilla, put it all in the bowl, beat until smooth, bake gas mk 4 15 to 20 minutes. makes a Victoria Sanswich or fairy cakes. Take care.
Great vlog as always Chris those cakes looked delicious ! Think they’re called Butterfly Cakes with the two ‘wings’ on top. Great apron too. Made me laugh ! Happy cruising and best wishes.
Thanks Trev. When did the name change. I’m well behind the drag curve on all things these days. The apron was a bit of humour which has a different meaning for some no doubt! Have a good week.
Hi Chris yet another stunning video from you they are always interesting and informative for people to watch.. They say they a change is as good as a rest and it seems to be true in your case.. As for myself Chris I always managed to take a trip abroad for a few weeks in my camper van.. during the winter months. Anyway Chris keep safe and well mate I'm looking forward to the next video of yours.
I like the Oxford canal alot, please remember to take your centre line with you in the narrow lock's for control and a sharp penknife to cut the rope if snagged in a crack! going down the lock..!! All the best.. enjoy
I do take the centre line and I’ve mentioned on vid that on my own, I only open one paddle so its nice and smooth. It’s already annoyed a couple who said I was too slow…….well as they were a bit rude, I responded……Enjoy Pete.
The colour saturation of your canal scenes was particularly good in this episode. Did you do something different, or was it just the light? I liked your musical choices. A fun sound track. Never thought about the potential of a B & B as part of the boating life--creative thinking is a good thing! I'm glad you weren't too put off by your previous baking experiments. Even on terra firma, things don't always go to plan, so experimentation is the way forward. [loved the "prick with a fork" apron. Absolutely brilliant. I suspect that baking is a little like gardening. Even if you're a master gardener, you suddenly become a newbie in a new environment. My maxim when it comes to baking cakes, cookies, granola or whatever: "One can never have too much vanilla extract." That's also a great thing to add to your hot chocolate. Today, I picked up a bottle of Bailey's (goes well with a shot of blended whisky) and the person at the till stopped me from leaving: "Wait, there's a gift that goes with that." In a small box was a frother for making hot chocolate. Reminded me of you so I mentioned your channel. Don't know if she looked it up, but maybe she will read this and respond. Who knows?
I got the colour correction right this week. The bow cam is a cheap knock off GoPro. It does what it’s supposed to do but I do need to colour correct in post. It’s remembering how I did it that is the hard bit. Thanks for the shout out to the person on the till. The Bailey’s makes the hot chocolate taste so much better as without it, the drink is just too chocolatey if there is such a word! Have a good week.

Morning Chris, talk about spontaneous! Watched your vlog, saw the cottage you stayed in and booked it for a weekend in April. Thank you for that, really looking forward to it. I am a cake maker @taylormade_cakes. Your fairy cakes looked great, but you are right, such hard work without a mixer, you did well.
I don’t have time to watch narrowboat channels. I live on one and just want to document my life in the way I want. I don’t want to be seen to copy others. However, it’s good to know I’m not the only one but sad it’s happening. I wonder what the reason is? Thanks for the support Maxine.
When you get past Banbury you will find the bottom gates are also single gates, not sure why, but I find these very hard to open. You mentioned in your Sunday Sandbag that you have already experienced the long and very bendy summit level of the South Oxford, so I realise you already a fair bit further on than this video. We drove past The Wharf Inn in Fenny Compton earlier this week and we thought of you. Just had a couple of days at the boat doing those regular maintenance jobs ready to go out for a cruise next month. Great blog as usual Chris. We are really familiar with this bit as we used to moor at Cropredy. Best wishes Debbie and Roger.
I’m at Cropredy now as it happens Debbie. It’s a strange place. There was a battle here and a festival. Sort of it’s own war and peace. Any suggestions?
@@chrismears-inslowtime The two pubs in Cropredy are very nice. Avoid the area in August because of The Fairport Convention festival; canal and village are absolutely packed at that time.
@@chrismears-inslowtime Hi Chris. We would recommend mooring above Cropredy Lock rather than below it - but it might be too late for that suggestion! The small shop alongside the canal in Cropredy is fairly expensive. There are lovely walks through the fields and if you are nearby a walk to the battle field site is interesting - only for it being there - not a great deal to see. The festival is great and the whole atmosphere of Cropredy changes during festival weekend. We went a couple of years ago - in a heatwave which made it interesting. Two very good pubs in Cropredy and another a short walk away. You would get lovely photographs in Cropredy - it is a very attractive place. I assume you have survived the two geese at Varney’s Lock! I got challenged one year when they ‘bit’ me on the bum and arm! Always very wary after that. After Cropredy there are long term moorings so not always much opportunity for stopping. There might be mooring opportunity past Bourton Lock. When you get to Banbury we would recommend mooring before you get to the town, nearer the bread factory. The park is on the towpath side - there is a parkrun on Saturday morning (you wouldn’t expect me not to mention that would you 😂). It is not far to walk into town - and since the opening of the newer leisure area in Banbury the town centre moorings can be busy and a bit noisier. However a brief stop in the town centre moorings is good for shopping. After that we used to find decent peaceful moorings past Banbury - just before bridge 172. Just far away from where the M40 crosses again to not be troubled by motorway noise. The lift bridges marked on the map near there are not operational as far as I recall - or at least they are up. It is also not far to walk back to the supermarket (possibly Morrisons) at bridge 168.
@@debbiewiltshire9733 Thanks for all the info. Most useful. As it happens we have encountered the geese as we’re moored in their pound. The thing is I tried to be nice and I asked them to respect us. Well, they paid the price as Colin lifted them both out by their necks, had a word and now they’re very quiet. They give birth boats a wide birth. Might be a different experience now. I’ll take the advice on Banbury. Thanks.
Although I subscribed a long time ago I haven't commented for a long time Colin because Keith and I watch your videos on a TV and I never think to go into my computer to "LIKE" and to comment. SORRY! Yet another interesting video but I have to say I am an Apple Crumble girl and I would have bolted down all of your crumble on my own. 🥰
I don’t think that apple crumble would have been any good for you. It tasted ok for the first spoonful but got progressively worse as each mouthful was ingested. I don’t like wasting food but that was the exception. Thanks for the comment and I’m please you just watch it the vids.
Nicely done there Chris, with the fairy or as we call them, cup cakes! They looked so good. If only you could own one of those BnB’s on the canal! Agreed, you should take those little moments that take your breath away. I’m sure having a traveling boater like Collin is a nice change for you as well. I didn’t get the mouse in the background thing going on or is it just randomly chosen?
You’re too observant Val. The ears; that is something for Easter. Yes, it’s lovely having a few people close by to have a daily chat with and actually go to the pub with occasionally. Thanks for the support.
Thanks for the comment Tash. I hope your Dad enjoys his experience on the boat. It takes a while to get used to it and he needs to fight through the downs and enjoy the ups. As for my cake making……as I say; discuss!
I don’t ever remember the canal looking muddy before, let alone as muddy as it now looks. Is it a feature of the canal you’re on, or a function of the weather? Is there a No Entry to Widebeams sign at the entrance to the canal you’re on, or do they presume that any widebeam owner will know where they can and can’t go? It must put a significant portion of the canal system out of bounds to them . Thanks, Chris.
Hi Martin. I must admit being on the South Oxford canal has been an eye opening experience. The towpaths on the GU are great by comparison. These ones are renowned for their poor state. It’s even in all the guide books as to how bad they are. No entry to Widebeams. It’s denoted in the guides and on the app by a thinner line. I only just noticed it when I was on the canal. But no real signs that I have seen. I think it’s just something you pick up along the way. If you don’t it’s a great learning experience. Yes to limitations. GU and the K&A is a cert but I’ve not checked other canals as I’m not worried.
Hi chris, I’ve a question about your coal box’s do the lids clip on and keep coal dry, and have you had any issues with people trying to nick them.? Watching our latest travels closely as I’ll be doing it in opposite direction towards the peak forest as soon as K& A opens.
The boxes have been a good idea in general. Yes they keep the coal dry from rain but I also need to remove the lids to reduce condensation. Nothing has gone missing which to be honest was a risk but it’s paid off. Due to not knowing what opportunities there is and the prices some marinas charge is a rip off. The only think I need to consider is where to store them over the summer months? Enjoy the Peak Forrest

Good stuff Rich. I’m sure we’ll have a blast
😄 skinny locks! Love it. I can see a big splash coming 😆. Trouble is we won’t see it 🤣. Please be careful 😉🌟. Joan
Your not crap there is sooo much content out there which is a lot worse and reckon people just flick from one to another...keep on boating I certainly appreciate the filming content and banter it's a refreshing change 👍👌
Arthur
Thanks Arthur. I appreciate the support and I reckon the TH-cam effect of small pieces of information means we will only be able to sustain a small attention threshold in the future. There are trade offs in life with no one measuring cause and effect. AI is another dangerous example.
Good point Chris, I think what goes around comes around and yes attention span is short atm but hopefully people will see the value of good vlog content 🤔
Keep up the great work chris ..your filming is so beatiful
Thank you for the support Lynn
Get a whisk ! Put air in the mixture - no beating 👍
Always enjoy your vlogs 😎
Nice to meet up with you today, but I’m not saying where 😉 apron was a laugh and the cakes looked good, hope to catch up again Chris and Angie 👍
Thanks Chris. Great to meet both you and Angie.
Mums always make the best cakes/buns. I must admit they tasted much better when I was hungry. Thanks for the comment Stuart.
Just my thoughts which I mentioned to someone who was frustrated following me.
always a plaeasure Chris
Thanks James.
Interesting placement of Veg! 🥕🥔🥕 last week. Looking foreward to next week already. 😂😂😂
Thanks Chris. Different veg each week. Or something else anyway
Love your vlogs! Your living best life.
Thanks David
Glad you had a spoilyourselfnight by the cut instead of on it Chris. great to see the enthusiasm Colin has for life afloat - i think your encouragement has got him off to a good start. i think i've heard in the not too distant past that its youtube that does the mysterious depletion of subscribers? have to check that out

CHRIS, BIG THANKS TO YOU.

All my music I think is great. It just takes time to get used to it. Thanks Colin.
I will be making butter cream next time but coming back from the pub…couldn’t be bothered. Thanks for the support.
Can’t wait to see the Julie’s jug’s & marvellous cakes yet again. Love Cake…
Thanks Dave. I’ll be sure to film them
Ho Chris Trev and Colin (me) will be making great sacrifices, to make ourselves available, to test and comment on your culinary skills of making fairy cakes especially with the folding in the flour, and Chris if your are not fully aware of the folding technique, I will happily show you for a small gift .... allowing me the opportunity to clean out the cake mixture in the mixing bowl 🥣.

If you like parsnips try doing 3 parsnips and 1 or 2 eating apples that makes delicious soup with 2 crushed garlic cloves and 1 chopped onion👌👌♥️
@jeanmeredith1918 I’ll certainly give that a go. I’ve just made a green slop which is some sort of soup that had parsnips in.
Jean, to make it purfick, beat the eggs and only add exactly 4oz to the other. Classic Victoria sponge mix. Colin
Nice one Chris, I thoroughly enjoy watching your vlogs, and joining you along the canals, especially like the interactions with other boaters.
Looking forward to seeing you on the kennett and avon canal. Thanks for sharing👌

That would be great, Chris.
You be careful Chris with the pushing lunges and pulls from one gate to the other 😮
Doing those stretches and lunges is great for you….just don’t fall. It’ll be fine but thanks for the concern

Thanks!
Hi Tom. Thanks very much for your generosity. It is, as always, very much apprecated
I am me and that bit I can’t change.
Julie's Jugs! Thought provoking! 😮

Chris I love watching your blog an your cakes looked absolutely delicious ❤
The cakes did improve over time I must admit. When I was really hungry, they were very tasty!
I bet they were as long as you injoyed them x
Take care.
Thanks Christine. Maybe when I’ve cleaned up, I’ll give it a go sometime.

@@chrismears-inslowtime
The two pubs in Cropredy are very nice. Avoid the area in August because of The Fairport Convention festival; canal and village are absolutely packed at that time.
@@JL1308 been to both. The village shop is a bit sparse and The Fairport Convention could be good one year.
Thanks.

Martin,
All the canals have a description, with the sizes of boats which can pass. Good point. ..... Best Regards Colin
Dear Points of View, why don't my fairy cakes look like Fanny's? 😅
