  • This week, we're stacking small square straw bales and loading round straw bales in the field. I am also scouting corn to decide when the corn will be ready for silage and what order to chop our fields in.

    Thank you for all the time and energy you put into making your videos. A big focus of this video was the massive amount of straw bales you have. I know for your milking herd you use processed manure for their bedding. What are are your uses for your straw bales?

      We are using sand bedding on the milking cows. We use straw as bedding for our heifers from birth to 8 months old and in our calving barn.

      Thanks for the clarification. I figured out I had been thinking about a dairy farm in Central Valley of California. Are you able to source your sand from your farm or do you need to have it trucked in? I know SaskaDutch have a deposit of sand on their property.

      These are wheat straw bales. The wheat is combined and then the straw is baled afterwards. We use this as bedding for heifers and dry cows.

    Great video Piet! Looking forward to the silage and earlage videos! What name brand of engine is in that Fendt of yours picking round bales in the field?

      I think it has a deutz engine, but I could be wrong.

      @@pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047 Fendt sure uses a lot of different engines. Must be a pain for the parts Dept and Service Dept to keep track what kind of engine it has and to have the right parts on hand and service manuals so know how to repair them!!

    Just wondering why you doing small squares ich such a big operation? In Germany small squares became pretty rare, just for hobby people or places like a horse clinic that does not have a tractor on site.

      We like to use the small squares for our youngest calves in our calf barn and calf hutches. It makes it easy for us to handle the straw when we're adding bedding.

    Do you grow all that hay and how long does that last you?

    • @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047
      @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047  ปีที่แล้ว

      This is straw we use as bedding for our calves, heifers and dry cows. This is all purchased from local farms off of wheat and barley fields after the grain is harvested.

    How many acres do you farm? And how many head of cattle do you have?

    • @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047
      @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We farm around 1,200 acres but also purchase feed and straw from neighboring farmers. We have around 1800 cowd and 1150 heifers.
