I probably should've put this on one of the Hawking University videos. Anyway, I was trying to figure out a way to make Hawking University prestigious, while still associating it with a figure that only passed away two years ago. Here's what I have... I'd love to add this to the CS Wiki if you're okay with this. Love this series! -- Hawking University is a private Ivy League research university in New Windsor, New England, Hawking is a highly residential research university. The university has been accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges since 1931 and offers 50 undergraduate concentrations (majors), 132 graduate degrees, and 35 professional degrees Hawking was founded on August 12, 1880, as Canal Normal School by Isaac Cottle, a New England businessman and Walter Nettles, a local entrepreneur. The school transformed from a normal school, to a school focused on providing educational opportunities in the "practical arts and sciences" for women and men of all backgrounds in 1883, and changed its name too Cottle & Nettles College. The first five graduates of Cottle & Nettles College received their degrees in 1887. The university's identity has been and to this day, held constant as a privately controlled, non-sectarian, coeducational center of higher learning, distinguished by a commitment to practical education and hands-on experience in an occupational setting. The school set new records of giving to the institution for two years in a row (1889-1890).Despite this, Cottle & Nettles College faced financial and enrollment challenges which led to academic budget cuts for the 1891-1892 academic year. In 1893, Alden Schotts, a wealthy commodity merchant in the UK before moving to America, saved the school from financial ruin by purchasing the school from Cottle and Nettles and became the schools president. Schotts, had been taught by Hannah Hawking, the paternal great-grandmother of Stephen Hawking the famed theoretical physicist and cosmologist whom is most associated with Hawking University today. Hannah Hawking saved her immediate family from financial ruin by opening a school in the home of her, and her husband, John Hawking. John, was wealthy man from Yorkshire, England, over-extended himself buying farm land and then went bankrupt in the Great Depression of British Agriculture. He's also the paternal great-grandfather of Stephen. Schotts was schooled by Hannah Hawking, and credited her for much of his success. He named the university in her honor in 1893. Schotts stated "To the much of the world outside, she is not known…But it becomes my duty to introduce you to such expert." Between 1896 and 1961, Hawking University awarded more than 720 PhDs and more than 3000 masters degrees to women alone. Stephen Hawking begin working alongside the university of his families namesake in 1964 shorty after he publicly challenged the work of Fred Hoyle and his student Jayant Narlikar at a lecture in June 1964. He was granted dual enrollment at both University of Cambridge and Hawking University to study and write a thesis on Roger Penrose's theorem of a spacetime singularity in the centre of black holes, working alongside world renowned Hawking University professor, Arturo KrollIn in 1970, Hawking and Kroll postulated what became known as the second law of black hole dynamics, that the event horizon of a black hole can never get smaller. He proposed the four laws of black hole mechanics, drawing an analogy with thermodynamics. Hawking held a senior post at both Cambridge and Hawking in 1975 although he rarely traveled to New Windsor due to his ALS. When he did, he traveled by private jet due to the necessary medical accommodations needed. Stephen Hawking became a pop culture icon and globally renowned figure in the world of science. Having been featured across multiple mediums he's become synonymous with the University that bares his surname.
Like other people mentioned - Classical music for the background when you're speaking works well, but for cinematics I am definitely a fan of the Lo-Fi. I think combination feels like the right balance for your style. Exactly my thoughts.
Pres, I live in Portland Maine, and I can tell you that your city Is spot on replica of Portland almost, I commonly find myself walking in downtown Portland and thinking, “wow this looks like new windsor!”
Definitely an interesting observation, as I always felt that New Windsor was more based on Providence and southern New England (especially Boston and points south) in general. That said, I'm a Texan and have never traveled to New England, so I would not know anything based on personal experience. I would definitely recommend checking out TheTimeister's Timbukton series as well. There's some Portland, ME inspiration in it, though since the creator is Canadian you'll also see some Halifax (and Nova Scotia/Atlantic Canada) inspiration too.
The Debussy you were playing in this video is perfect background music, but I definitely agree that it's nice to switch it up in the cinematics with lo-fi (or anything else, if you wanna experiment).
The university is looking awesome. Can’t wait to see it totally surrounded by neighborhoods - it’s going to look super immersed. Also, can’t wait to see some proper triple-deckers in the city center! I think it’s really going to come together in the next few episodes.
The New Windsor University (insert sports name) is a school in the Ivy League. They have won a national championship in football in 1956, but have struggled to remain in relevancy since. The team has faced scandals with head coach Johnny Smith having affairs with another team, and with their team at 2-10 at the end of the season, they need a miracle for the 2020 season.
Seems like Hawking University (the older school in New Windsor) would be the more "Ivy League" type institution, especially as Pres stated that it was based off of Brown's campus. I could see University of New Windsor either being a public university (though those seem a bit less common in New England than other parts of the U.S.), or more likely a moderate-sized private university with big-time athletics, perhaps something like Boston College. Though the Ivies have Division I athletics, at least in football they are in the FCS rather than the FBS (the FBS schools have the higher-level football programs).
So glad you're pulling the U of R into new Windsor. Its a really unique structure that I pass daily on my way to work. Mt hope cemetery across from it is pretty massive and dates back 1838 and is the first municipal cemetery in the US. Susan B Anthony and Frederick Douglass are buried there.
great series dude :) i really like the classical easy tunes when your talking, its great for background, and with the cinematics, these funky beats combined with a violin or other classical instrument to go with it is awsome, but i guess its personal to everyone. Maybe just follow your own taste for that, for it is fine :D greets from the Netherlands
On your observation that the University of Rochester's sports facilities are small, Rochester is in the NCAA Division III, so it doesn't need to have large sports facilities for that level of intercollegiate athletics. I went to an NCAA Division I-FBS school, so we had plenty of large athletic facilities, though our student body was fairly small (around 10,000 students) by D1-FBS standards. So basically we had the large stadiums and the plethora of athletic facilities that you are putting down in this video.
Brandon Claridge If he is shooting for a D3 University yeah that stadium is wayy to big If his team gets rly gud than that size is good for D1 FCS or FBS
non classical for everything, maybe it'll start growing on me with different composers but so far it's really off putting. The shopping mall episode had the best music selection so far imo and I usually don't like that type of music. It was really well mixed and made the cinematics just soooo goood feeling

Really? I'm of the totally opposite opinion and actually enjoy the classical music far more than the absolute constant repetitiveness of the "Lo-fi" genre. If you'd like to get into the more "awesome" side of classical music I suggest flipping through this compilation th-cam.com/video/Tos3o_GWED4/w-d-xo.html
@ a lot of it is definetly based on what you yourself are into but chopin has this... narrative to it, the song itself is constantly building up to reach those majestic moments yadda yadda and it doesn't really mesh well with voiceover imo. Lofi is repetetive and sometimes overly cute but it works better with narration overlayed on top. It doesn't pull you away like chopin did to me in the last episode.

@@Nihito Yeah I hear you. Classical music can be distracting with it's narrative if you are trying to listen to someone talk at the same time. I think it's important to find a "soothing" piece of music to have in the background when you put voice-over on top. But for the non-viced parts of the videos I do think classical music, preferably with a strong narrative and much gusto, to accompany the building montages.
Funny thing - I didn't even notice the background music until you mentioned it. I think that's good because it means I was focused on the video and your presentation. Lo-Fi during the cinematics makes for a nice transition.
as always great episode! I would love to see something like a bronx zoo instead of central park, maybe you will make a zoo on two banks of the river and connect it with bridges for a better effect? loose idea but maybe you will come up with something better thanks to it :) much love
Maybe have a general aviation airport for privately owned aircraft, including jets, helicopters and commuter aircraft ("puddle jumpers") located near a nearby small town or hopefully centrally located by various towns? At 14:24, you covered up a lot of cars, if they don't re-spawn elsewhere don't they still add to the vehicle count?
I think you should add a little bit of air time after you finish speaking before raising the music and cutting because it sounds like you're cutting yourself off whenever you change out of commentary
You need to add more to the sports complex. I would recommend a basketball field and baseball also it would be very unlikely that a dorm would be in front of the stadium like that blocking the view from the opening. So in my opinion you could do three things to fix the view. 1, move the stadium to the river bank because 99% uins on rivers have there stadiums on rivers. 2, put a basketball stadium in front of the opening. 3, put a park in front of the opening. I trust that in the end though it will look good:)
i think that the the classical music in the time laps is great, but it should probably be something more eclectic in tone to fit better with the vibe of the city.
Maybe you could add a massive park or set of parks around town or probably an are of eco business buildings, I would love to see them in this city, I mean, just as a suggestion
What do you think about doing a Major/Minor League Baseball stadium? Between the Yankees, Red Sox, and Mets, there's a lot of baseball in the Northeast.
Nice work! Would you consider adding a field house to the campus athletic compound? Some place to play into sports (eg: basketball, volley ball, etc...)
strictoaster had an issue with his trams spawning with incoorect compartments i don't know if he fixed it but i'm sure he would be happy to help if he can
