    Thank you so much, the autofocus is the only weak area I feel on the GH5, but these settings have really made a difference. I found it improves all the autofocus mode, and even made Face tracking seemingly usable from my first tests.

    Thank you so much for this! The funny thing is, I always shoot manual; I use the voigtlander lenses which are completely manual in every aspect. So when I got hired for a shoot that required gimbal-type work, I froze. Lol. It is usually the other way around; shooting manual can get tricky -- who doesn't know how to shoot automatic?? :) Yup, that's me. These settings literally saved me. Thanks for making this video! Works like a charm.

      yeh am a manual guy, but most scenes ive shot for small films or scenes have been static or very limited moving. But now in a situation where theres gonna be a bit of running behind the character n im like how in the hell do i keep this camera in focus as i chase the fool around the set lul. I aint that experience yet to focus pull, run n shoot lul.

      @@libbyschwartz4754 Just had to get tricky with each scene, run behind him for a bit keep it in as much focus as possible then cut and choose different angles that way the editor has many options even if stuff goes out of focus.

      @libbyschwartz4754 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Varillah Problem with that is, when you gotta shoot one long stretch of footage that can not be cut and you need it to maintain focus on moving subjects.. I had that problem after setting these auto-focus settings; some of the runs went smoothly, but in others, the focus just wouldn't catch the subject. It was frustrating and I'm not sure what to do for future shoots like that. :/

    This is fantastic Nick. I bought my GH5 5 days ago and have been struggling trying to make sense of all the possibilities and come to a workable operational solution. Your settings saved me a lot of time. One thing I had to figure out on my own was how to change the focal area while shooting on auto focus. It turns out it is fairly easy. You just press the shutter half way while recording, change the focus on the lens, while you are shooting, and move on. Many thanks.

    I'm confused with some of your settings. Eye sensor AF? Doesnt that just mean that you can choose an AF point with your eye up to the eyepeice. And AF ON. isn't that only effective when you press the button? I am not trying to "call you out" on those. Just curious if you've tried the same with those options, for example, having other settings.

    • @NickStubbs
      @NickStubbs  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The eye sensor AF just means the camera will start to focus on whatever the camera is pointing at when you get closer to the viewfinder.
      Eye controlled autofocus in the way you describe was on the old Canon EOS 5 film camera (which I owned) and I believe there's a new camera out now that also focuses on whatever you are looking at.

I plan only to have a single lens to cover all needs & I'm thinking of the 12 > 35 F2.8 constant aperture, but it's £400 more expensive than if I go for the kit lens. I'm not sure Tommy. According to the Panny firmware page, the new features (near shift and far shift) only allow you to prioritise either near or far subjects. They say nothing about autofocus quality etc...

    Hello, Im kind of struggling with the AFC settings. Does the in-menu setting have somethink to do with the lever hardware button above the screen? For example I have got the continuous AF ON in the menu BUT I have the lever on AFS/AFF function. However I sometimes have the feeling that the camera is focusing automatically without hitting the shutter button. Is that normal? Dont I have to set the lever on AFC in order to activate the actual continuous autofocusing? Im planning to use the camera with ronin in future so Id like to understand the focusing system right. THX!

    Nick please tell me ! I'm filming fast moving fighter jets. Which video settings will be the best ? Shutter speed, fps etc . Thank you

    • @NickStubbs
      @NickStubbs  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It all depends what you want from the footage. If you want smooth movement, the faster the frame rate the better. 50/60fps up to 100/120fps would look super smooth. Keep the shutter speed at generally twice the frame rate where possible.
      I.e. 50fps = 100th/sec, 100fps = 200th/sec
      If you want to pull sharp stills from fast moving objects, use a fast shutter speed. I.e. 1000th/sec for a frame rate of 100fps.
      ...adjust aperture and ISO accordingly.

    Great video Nick, really helped me. Do you find the auto focus improves significantly if you use a more expensive lens?

    • @NickStubbs
      @NickStubbs  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your feedback James, glad it helped! Not necessarily more expensive lenses but better lenses, yes. For example, the 50mm 1.4 Canon EF is pretty good with the GH5. I would think the newer Sigma/Tamron lenses would be pretty good too. I would take your camera to a store and try a couple out before buying if you can. But using a poor quality lens will definitely hinder the autofocus I would say...

    I do a lot of top down shooting demos where the camera is about 3 feet away from the table. Will these settings work well where the objects I am demonstrating may be moving in and out of the focus plane quickly (I obviously haven't tried them yet)? Other suggestions? Thanks.

    • @NickStubbs
      @NickStubbs  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To be honest, I wouldn't use auto focus in that situation with any camera. As an observer, it annoys me to see focus hunting on product videos.
      I would work out and establish the area that will be in focus using a smaller, fixed aperture and keep the product in that range. Use a depth of field calculator to establish that range.
      If you wanted the occasional, hero shot with shallow depth of field, take it separately and drop it in as b roll as you speak.

      If you go to 2m 18s on this video: th-cam.com/video/oo1lGgi216k/w-d-xo.html ...you will see various walk-through's with the GH5. I think it does a brilliant job if set up correctly. Obviously there are other, smaller cameras like the Sony A6500 that could do the job, or the Canon 80D/5D Mark IV with their excellent dual pixel autofocus but it depends on what else you want the camera for and your budget. Hope that helps...

    Will this be good enough to track a moving subject?

    • @NickStubbs
      @NickStubbs  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on the speed of movement but in my experience, if you are not careful to move with the subject and/or if it is too sporadic in its movement, the GH5 will tend to "hunt" and lose focus now and again. If you are on a simple, slowish pan whilst tracking a moving subject it is ok but for simple shots like that, I would recommend manual focus anyway.

    • @NickStubbs

      Hi Greg, nothing. The AF assist lamp is only activated when you press the shutter button. This method doesn't need that and simply uses the selected AF area.

    1:46 I think I ruined the fn3 in the settings of the fn3 button. When I press fn3 button it doesn't respond also when I press fn3 button for a long time is not responding & not give me to change the function of the button. How can the Fn3 button be restored like the first time?

    • @NickStubbs
      @NickStubbs  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your lens AND rear switch need to be set to AF. If that doesn't work, you need to check the "Fn Button Set" for that Fn3 button. Go to the "SpannerC" in the menu, then "Operation", then "Fn Button Set", then "Setting in REC mode". Navigate to the Fn3 button, click it and hit "Restore to Default". Hope this helps.

    We shoot a lot of sports and i tried it tonight and it was not good for us we used to get a slow focus every 15 mins or so for a second or so but normally fixed it self but i thought I would give it a go.My camera man said as soon as the game was over what ever i have changed put it back it was a lot worse than before so i think it depends on what your shooting if its just a few feet away like in your video or if like us we shoot sports from one side to the of a football pitch.
    I also made the mistake of not writing down what mine was set to at the start don't make that mistake as I can only undo what I am sure of the + - setting on lock on erratic I can't remember what we had it on and it took us ages to fine tune in so don't just anything until you write down previous settings. It sounds like it works well for some people depends on lens etc but thank anyway its always worth a try (:
