I forgot you did Patreon shoutouts and then at the end I was like hey that's me lol. I'm glad I could help support you I love your channel. I definitely learned a lot from this video and you did a great job getting it across with a combination of video and written information. Keep it up, Orion :)
Hi Orion,Thanks for replying to my comment.doing this as much as possible helps your channel to grow as well as receive support along the way.Have you ever been to a tournament and for some reason the waves were not there for a tournament standards?Have a good day.Thanks.
Yeah. I've had a few contests like that. Unfortunately at these amateur level contests they can't really do anything about it and they have to run the contest no matter what. At more Pro level contests there is a waiting period where they have a certain amount of time and they can choose the days with the best waves.
Awesome video, Orion. Super interesting learning about judging surf contests. And you explained it really well too. So good job and I can't wait to see what you make next :)
Hey friend, another great video! If The Travel Channel ever does a Surf Show, you should be their host! Great job on that demonstration, and I love that hat! :)
Good job man! When I did contest I never took the time to learn what the judges might be looking for. I just did as many turns as I could on every wave. Sometimes that worked, sometimes it didn’t. Thanks for the vid 🤙🤙
Cowabunga dude, Mahalo. This video was to say the least ...right on target! The editing surely took some time and your videos get better all the time. You are unique and should be so proud of what you have accomplished. I know those who subscribe and support are never disappointed. Stay Cool. ..... Kai
Thank you, mahalo... Yeah that one took quite a while to edit but I think it was worth it. Just happy that you enjoyed it 😁 No, I've never thought of shaping my own board but that is definitely something I want to try out. Seems like you can really learn a lot from it.
Hi O, why would the score not be rounded further.. 6:15 (think, you spoke of scores and rounding off) why wouldn't round it to an 8? Enjoyed the surf contest tour. I'm learning a lot about surfing.
And, when you compete, you get a jersey ... do u keep the jersey or give it back? Is the jersey part of the entrance fee? You pay the entrance fee to surf and they include in your packet a jersey?
Patrick Knox in a contest everything has to be as precise as possible so all the scores have to have decimal points so 6.53 or 9.38 or 5.00. No they do not let you keep the jerseys. There is a place where you pick up your jersey before your heat and then give it back when you finish.
Those jersey would be a cool souvenir of the competitions, that's all I was thinking. When you sign up for a competition, do you get a goody or swag bag full advertisements and free things, such as: t-shirt, discount cards, free wax etc.?
Great explanation Orion of what you are up against. Curious, can the Head Judge tell a regular judge to get lost if they seem to be way too high or way too low compared to the other judges ? What other "special powers" does the head judge have :-)
That was interesting, Orion; but there are a couple of things that I don't understand: 1) Why are top score and lowest score dropped? 2) Doesn't that cheat the guy who had the highest score? 3) Why don't they just add up all the scores, and then divide that number by the number of surfers in that one heat to solve for the average?
Very cool - good to know that info and details; will be helpful when we see your future competition clips. Can you tell us what priority means and how it works when you're out catching waves in a competition? #AskOrion
RobEJC thank you! Happy that you learned something out of it. Yeah priority is also a important subject to cover, maybe I'll make a priority video in the next contest
Lauren Flaherty I mean that they make sure that all the waves are seen. There are a lot of waves being taken so sometimes not all of the judges see them.
That was awesome now we know what to look for while watching someone surf. I am so glad that Atua introduced you to us. Keep doing what you love
Carl Estes thanks, I'm happy you enjoyed the video and learned something out of it 😁

A fascinating look inside, Orion! I had no idea how it works, and I see now that the judging is incredibly complex, and dependent on a lot of factors.

Lauren Flaherty I mean that they make sure that all the waves are seen. There are a lot of waves being taken so sometimes not all of the judges see them.
