Great discussion. Very useful to those of us that understand the concepts but lack the physical ability. Also explains why I start noodling in the evening and when I look up it’s 2am. 😂

Modulation in moderation. This is the way. Thank you.

"Approaches to music sequencing" is worthy of a PhD dissertation. Many sequencers seem to get stuck at 16 steps simply because after that the level of mechanical vibe-killing tedium sharply rises. A few break out by having a 32-step grid or dividers-multipliers and variable lanes. Arp is very unusual in that it's incredibly easy to go way beyond 16 steps. The price you pay for that is not having micro control over every note. Instead you control scales, ranges, cycles and patterns. My best analogy has Arp as a sheepdog: It efficiently guides a big flock of notes from place to place. Anyway, I'm glad we're calling it a sequencer now, maybe we can say Arp is an acronym? Arranger-Repeater-Performer :)

@@RichardDeHove This is a great description of ARP and a great analogy. This is the experience I imagined when I started work on ARP. I've often thought that using ARP is like being the conductor of an orchestra with no sheet music. You're relying on the musicians to implement your ideas. Compose and perform. 😊

For me the Arp is the right tool to create nice patterns without loosing control. With some practice you easily can make interesting beautiful live performances on multiple instruments. With a random generator it is not that much fun for me - It feels like riding kind of a bull and you can’t steer this beast. Sorry for my weak english but hopefully you know what I mean.

This device looks awesome, but I can't afford more hardware. Would be great to have even basic VST or other software integration with Bitwig Grid

@@zmmmzmmmz Thanks! We've explored a VST version and while it isn't out of the question, you can't beat getting hands on. ARP is very much a musical instrument. I spent many, many years making music with a mouse and when I made the leap into hardware I didn't find the tools I wanted to work with. ARP is the result of that journey. I also wanted it to be affordable too. No more than a decent MIDI Controller.

Interesting. But repeatability and a harmonic pattern are by no means definitive of what music can be. They describe what it usually is and how humans usually use it but in my experience there are more interesting sources of variability and creativity for exploring spontaneously arising patterns. This is seen by mind as just chaos but this is not a very interesting dialogue with sound. Repeatability is not a crucial criterion. Of course these are views and inspirations for different persons.
