We have the same Edson bulge pump installed in our wet locker, installed new before we left 12 years ago. (Yeah when we had more money) We have never used it...but we test it periodically, and it’s a seriously great pump. Good idea just using it for everyday water to make sure it’s working! Nothing will pump faster than this thing!!
Maybe we will pick up a spare parts kit...thanks for the reminder. It seems to be holding up, but nothing lasts forever! With 3 new thruhulls going in on this refit, about to go around the Cape of Storms, it would be good to make sure this is working at the top of its game... -Rebecca

I threw mine in the trash in fiji when i priced the diaphram. Thats 15 years ago. My thinking then was location and cost. I have a deep keel.and its hose was a pain. But now i think you guys are right. I should have kept it. But at the time i was replacing everything on the old girl
The diaphragms were insanely expensive. I just kept telling myself it was cheaper than a replacement pump!
Just a thought guys, to keep track of the water in the bilge, whilst pumping we counted the strokes, from the first one where we felt the pick up of water, to the last full stroke and noted the number in the log, along with the time. That gives you a reference as to how much water you are "making". Great vid BTW and supper advice.
I have a Whaler Gusher 10 MK3 and absolutely love it. It moves 1 quart per stroke and is a lot less expensive, but still built tough. Another great feature is the cost of the rebuild kits, only about $30 from West Marine and includes the diaphragm, valve flaps and new stainless screws.

Very good presentation and especially the positives and negatives. I am a big fan of manual bilge pumps and the simplicity that comes with them. I also use electric pumps, and I like the electric for when I am not on the boat. What a lot of people don't realize is that the ratings for the electric pumps are under laboratory conditions and most often the actual pumping capacity is nowhere near the listed rating.
Of course, the best pump is a scared person with a bucket!!
We have automatic electric pumps for when we are not there but also, nothing major should happen. We close all the seacocks and leave her in a safe place.
@@RiggingDoctor That is always a good idea. One of the members of one of my yacht clubs lost his boat because he didn't do that. He was away on holiday and the hose from the seacock to the sink burst.
Do you have a single bilge pump installed? I recently helped a friend install a second one as a back up. I think that rather than install a second bilge pump for the two boats that are at a marina, I will install a high water alarm. The marinas have people who walk the docks roughly once an hour and in theory they would hear the alarm. It's a good theory! The problem is that the one marina doesn't give me a lot of confidence.

had one for years , the rubber split & a tyre guy galvanized the rubber split & went for years more.

Rigging Doctor When I pump like crazy for 45 seconds , it pics up the prime and pumps water.
……..If it continues to work in the future that will be great, otherwise I think I will install a foot valve down in the bilge,

One time when out on the boat, a 5 gallon water tote broke free and dumped out on the floor. I was sailing in the cockpit and a friend went down for refreshments and shouted "There's water sloshing around!". I was terrified for 30 seconds before realizing it was not a problem.
That would have been terrifying! Glad it was such a simple problem which was more of a mess than a problem 🙃

They are a nice pump and will never wear out. Not saying you won't tire out from pumping it though. Hope you never find it necessary to use it at sea.

I have an Edson pump in my boat, in one of the cockpit lockers and easily accessible from the wheel. When I bought the boat a year ago, we didn't test all the bilge pumps, but we did run one of the electric ones. There are 3 pumps total: the Edson, and two electric. While the boat was on the hard last winter, we discovered that the automatic switch attached to one of the electric pumps had failed. Then the batteries failed, so we went to pump out with the manual pump.... and discovered that the valves on the Edison had failed. When I saw how much the valve and diaphragm replacement kit was, I considered buying a new pump. However, I think the pump may be original to my 1973 boat, and although it showed some signs of corrosion (I have an aluminum version), it seems to be in fairly solid condition, so I figured it was worth the cost of the parts kit to put it back in service.

We consider ourselves engineless until we need to dock in the marina.
We left Portugal by sailing off anchor and sailed onto our anchor in Spain. Then sailed off that anchor and into the harbor in Morocco. After 2 countries, we motored the last 200 feet to the pier :)

I watched this video on your Edson pump. Great video.
My new / old boat has an Edson pump, which is mounted in the cockpit sail locker,
but it does not work properly, it will not prime initially boo hoo!
It’s the Aluminium model with the side suction valve and a 30” handle
The suction line rises about 5 ft. from the bilge, perhaps this is too high a lift to get suction.
I took it apart but could not find anything wrong with it., the bladder looks perfect, valves too.
I replaced the suction hose because I thought It might be leaking air in.
It will pump when you rig it up to a 5 gal bucket of water , and just 1-2 ft of suction lift…
Any idea what the problem is??

That’s a huge bummer!
Ours is about 4-5 feet above the bottom of the bilge and it gets the water up there.
I have had issues with other pumps where the valves are dry and not sealing well, then they don’t prime. If you prime it with a bucket to get the valves wet, then let the water out of the line, then try and lift the water 5’; does it work then?
A last ditch effort would be to try putting some grease (preferably one that won’t eat the rubber valves) on the valves and see if that makes a better seal. If it works with that, it would be worth getting a rebuild kit. If it doesn’t work with that, I would call Edson and talk with their guys. They have helped me troubleshoot stuff in the past and their knowledge was incredible!
Don Street said to mount some indoor/outdoor carpet to the bottom of the portable pump board and it wont slide around.
I’m literally looking for one rt now! We have an old manual whale gusher currently in the lazarette, as well as a large manual on a board too . Not the Edson. Of course we have an electric one too. We’re basically all manual on our Crealock. Peace
By the by, you can probably use a piece of leather in place of the rubber diaphragm. That’s one of the beauties of the manual diaphragm pumps, you can use leather with them.

I find them in consignment shops. If you are near Maryland, there is an incredible shop in Annapolis called Bacon Sails. It’s where I get most of my gear.

Can you link the plans? Sounds like a good winter project.
Cut a length of 2 inch 50 mm plastic waste pipe in 3 pieces. A long piece, a length and a short bit. Join the long and the short using a 't' piece. The medium length bit sticks out of the 't' piece so that the entire unit looks like a lower case "t". Cut a piece of tin like a large coin shape. It should fit very loose inside the pipe. Make a bit of leather a little larger, but just slightly loose in the pipe. Using a screw attach them to the broom handle with the leather between the handle and the metal. Put an end cap on the bottom of the long piece after drilling lots of small holes in it. Insert handle in the top, short piece, leather end first. Place in a drum of water and raise and lower the handle. The water flow should be continues. Cheers Gray
My new boat has one like that but it's aluminium and that corrodes really bad. haven't taken it apart yet to see how bad it might be! Haven't checked on the price of the hose yet but about 20 ft. so that will cost!!!
The hose was expensive but Edson did have the best price on the hose when I put this in about 4 years ago.
May not be a bad idea to put some Black Magic on the diaphragm to keep it in good shape.
